The pianist Rob Christie (music studio director of Republic Records distribution of UMG, two-time Grammy winner) changed the musical arrangement and Angelina changed the vocal arrangement, but she didn't change the lyrics. Angelina changes the lyrical structure starting with the bridge and gives the song a different meaning than Felton Jarvis and Mark James , Angelina version absolutely fits the lyric better. Once again, many people don't hear and understand the song until Angelina tells the story. 👣 💯 *AJ* 💯👣 The producer Felton Jarvis from Elvis Presley cleverly covered this *Mark James song from 1968 in 1969* , Elvis' last #1 hit in the US and #7 of his most successful songs. Felton Jarvis took the original country arrangement completely from Mark James and pushed the song with more speed and additional instruments (wind instruments, violin etc.) and a spectacular backing choir (in the studio version).

I span two eras. This song could almost be said to be the comeback song for Elvis, performed at his first Vegas show in 1969. I always loved it. Angelina did a magnificent job of covering the song. She did, indeed, make it her own and I enjoyed every minute of it. In short, I just had a wonderful time walking down memory lane, and listening to the fresh and new, all in one sitting.

Glad to see you back with our barefoot angel Angelina again! This is a great one because it shows her love for Elvis and her amazing musical genius to complete turn the song around and start & end with the bridge the most emotional part of the song. Also, she included many intentional elements like Priscilla Presley's beehive hair (which Angie likes too), the black leather suit & red guitar same as on Elvis's 1968 comeback. She changed the song completely to really match with the lyrics, but still pays homage to the original song & Elvis. She is brilliant. Also, news announced yesterday that Angelina is having a 2-show concert at the Westgate Resort in Las Vegas on Feb. 29th and that is the same hotel (back in the 60's it was the International) where Elvis performed and they still have a statue of him in the hotel. Regarding your comment that you may want to react to the "I Have Nothing" song that popped up in the video, you will not regret it because she does an amazing version just like everything else that she sings. AJ was 16 in the spring of 22. Thats also when she did the I Have Nothing video. Elvis never wrote a song. Suspicious Minds was written in 1968 by Mark James concerning his ex wife's suspicions. Elvis recorded it in 1969 and it was his last number one hit. This complete revamp by Angelina is a total masterpiece! She's warring the black leather suit he wore on his 1968 comeback special and playing the same guitar. Her hair is the same as his wife Presilla wore back in the day. AJ jot to meet her after she did this video and then did a crying tribute to her daughter, Lisa last January when she died.

I didn't quite get it my first time listening because I had heard Elvis's arrangement so often, but I absolutely love it now. I liked the back-to-back format for this particular cover. I drove past the HUGE marques at the entrance to the long driveway at the Las Vegas Hilton on the morning of August 16th, 1977. It had one word on it.....ELVIS......in 2 story high letters. He was going to open that Friday for a two week run....all the tickets had been sold months before. The Hilton is now called Westgate and in a month on the same stage almost 47 years later the torch will be passed.......bet Elvis is busting with pride.

I always preferred Elvis’ studio version of the song. Most reactors watch the live Vegas version which I always felt was too over the top. And yes it does take away from the meaning of the song.

Hey Gina, thanks for playing Elvis' version beforehand. It's always a good idea to check out the performance Angelina's rendition is based on, that's the only way to really appreciate her achievement. Because Angelina slows down her songs and makes every single word in the lyrics audible, it often feels like you're getting the meaning of the song for the first time, even if it's a cover by one of the Greats like Elvis. Elvis was not only one of the greatest singers but also an outstanding entertainer on stage, while Angelina is not only a singer but a master storyteller. Both convey emotions to the audience in different ways. Angelina is also known to put her own spin on every song she covers - respectful of the original - and sometimes simply change the meaning to something else through a different arrangement and the use of her voice. She pays tribute to Elvis in every way possible in the visual approach here, especially as it was released shortly before the premiere of the Elvis biopic. But vocally it is closer to the “real” original (by Mark James). Although it is the same melody and lyrics that Elvis used, the meaning is different and probably more in keeping with the original songwriter's intent. Sometimes Angelina even creates a “second original” that stands out from the source material, as in this case here or in Bohemian Rhapsody. Watch Elvis' official music video for "Suspicious Minds" - it's a fast, breathless tour de force, different from the studio version you've choosen and very different from this slow, thoughtful ballad that Angelina created. Angelina does two things amazingly well. She makes you understand every word of the lyrics in a way the original singers never tried to do. And she also has the ability to make you feel them as well. Interesting to note that Angelina Jordan has a Two Show Concert day in Las Vegas on Feb 29, 2024 (this is a Leap Year), at West Gate Resort and Casino. I’m pretty sure she’ll sing this song at that concert.

Some would say that the words don't match the very upbeat tempo of Elvis' rendition. I would be one of those 'some'. For Angelina, it's all about the words and the story they are telling. For many of us old timers (I was a teen during the '50s when Elvis came on the scene), Angelina's rendition is the first time we ever listened and understood what the song was about. I love this interpretation by Angelina, and much prefer it over the original. Course that's true about everything Angelina does. Just when you thought the world was going to hell in a hand basket, along comes this amazing young lady. So much more to come. Yes, that's a bit over the top, but she deserves over the top.

However, Angelina's version here, aside from being a stunningly beautiful performance, strikes me as better interpreting the meaning of the lyrics. I loved that you played the Elvis version first, but I hope it doesn't cause you any copyright problems. To me Angelina's version is much more emotional & reflects the lyrics much more accurately. When you react to her cover of Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing, you will hear a whole different voice from her, even though she is the same age (16) in both. In this interpretation AJ shows all his training at the Oslo Waldorf School, the training academy based on the Waldorf methodology, which motivates children to develop humanistic awareness, science and the arts such as: Painting, music, lyrics. songs, literature (reading, analysis and writing) in total freedom, without a guiding educational program. With the objectives of being able to understand, feel emotionally what a song expresses, destructure it, reorganize it and put the song back together without losing the essence or create and narrate new stories based on the same text. This is what we see from AJ in all her performances, which are never the same, we see the artist vocally and musically designing a painting that tells a story. As you can see, by slowing down the song, the meaning becomes relevant by understanding what the lyrics say, what the story behind the song is. As she always does, in this song she removes all the musical distractions, leaves it raw, reorganizes the lyrics, removes what is repeated and only the real story remains, the essence, showing all the emotional conflicts that arise but summarized in 3 min , the original 6 minutes that showed a song that seemed fun, entertaining, when in reality it was a drama. In her presentation in Portsmouth 2023, before singing, she invites all people to be more considerate and kinder to their loved ones.

To start the song at the point where Elvis abruptly stops and slows down the song and says “Oh let our love survive” is pure genius. Almost as good as the Bohemian Rhapsody arrangement.

This was definitely a family production - the Executive Producer Mery Zamani is Angelina's grandmother, the 2 youngest girls are her cousins & the older girl is Angelina's younger sister Juliette. It was also a nice tribute to Elvis - Angelina's beehive hairdo is reminiscent of Priscilla Presley & her black leather jumpsuit & red Hagstrom guitar were just like Elvis from his "Comeback Tour". Angelina has covered a number of Elvis songs including when she was much younger singing How Great Thou Art (in the same style & key as Elvis). looking forward to more of your Angelina reactions. Really enjoy your unique perspective on Angelina's music! I discovered Angelina on KZread in early 2020. Don't think I could have made it through the early years of the pandemic without her soothing magic. Interesting to hear Elvis' version first. It was fun but didn't carry meaning like AJ's does. When Angelina sings, the focus is on the meaning of the song, while many others seem to sing just to show how good they are. The incredible thing is that Angelina has been doing this since she was a small child and is one of the things that impresses me the most. She is not just a good singer, she is a true artist.

A visual and vocal masterpiece ! Angelina's take on this iconic Elvis song is unbelievable. She really slowed it down and broke it down into its lyrical elements that gave us an emotional ride on every note that she sang. It was important to know that. Angelina stayed true to the Elvis's song and also paid homage by wearing a black leather jumpsuit; the iconic red guitar and the Priscilla Presley hairdo of that era. Angelina in my mind is a musical genius who is able to use her composition ,style and vocal catalog to bring it all together to create such a classic video ! No doubt we all have been waiting for this, your next AJ reaction. I mean 17 hours and approaching 4 K views says a lot, or even say i all, I think. You are so all into the angels group allready, and I love that. You are where you belong. And we all know we have so meny great moments ahead as you go further into Angelina`s universe. Thank you. The studio is the best version of Elvis doing this song. This particular one may be a remake but is more true to the original song. The Las Vegas show is usually used and that's an inferior show tune version. AJ's version really connects with and maintains the intended feeling of the original. Uncovering the past as she pulls the sheet from the piano with her Elvis leathers, Prescilla hair, Elvis guitar, that opening strong deep tone. Slowing it down makes the lyrics stand out more. Excellent piano. Such a good production. I see it in your eyes, you are appreciating her more with each song. We know how that is. The best is yet to come. Good reaction.

The song was written by Mark James, an American singer/songwriter, who recorded it the year it was written. The best known version, however, was that done by Elvis Presley. It was his last No 1 song. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, Mark James is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aries (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along).

I am enjoying these reactions of your with Angelina. I have just been binging on your NGT reactions, and now you have heard her newer stuff I think you really need to react to her performance of Unchained Melody at the recent Nobel Peace Prize Award ceremony, sung live with KORK, the top orchestra in Norway. Remember, she is 18 years old. As judge Bjarte said ten years ago, it is unbelievable.

Stereo was brand new, 4 track tape machines were just invented. You had to record multiple live tracks across 3 tracks, then bounce them to the empty track while adding more vocals/instrumentation. After clearing the original 3 tracks, you would listen/monitor to that bounced track while recording onto the new empty tracks, continuing adding/bouncing to fill the tracks up. Every time you bounced the original was degraded, so you had to plan accordingly, until you then mixed out to final mix of 2 track for stereo. After a while they figured out how to synchronize two 4 track machines together to get more tracks. All music was recorded this way until mid to late 70's when equipment with many more tracks was created. Us amateur musicians learned how to do this in our own basement studios during the 80's when portable 4 track tape cassette machines became affordable and we were able to create our own music mixed down to stereo cassette. Of course most of our stuff was no where near as 'clean' as the pros.

The Hagstrom Red Guitar used in this video is a modern up to date copy of the one Elvis used in 1968, and belongs to Rob Christie, AJ’s A&R rep from Republic Records/Universal Music Group. The Hagstrom Red Guitar belonged to musician Al Casey, a member of Elvis’ backing band during the special in 1968. According to an accompanying letter from Casey, he was asked to let Elvis use the guitar by the producers, as they "thought it would look beautiful on camera and with the set." Elvis Presley’s 1942 Martin D-18 acoustic guitar may have recently sold for $1.32 million, but fear not - another of the King’s axes, this one his cherry-red Hagstrom Viking II electric guitar, famous for its use in the legendary '68 Comeback Special, is hitting the block. The semi hollow instrument is a highlight of Kruse GWS Auctions’ Artifacts of Hollywood & Music auction, which begins on March 27. It's being offered with a starting bid of $250,000.
