GIMP 2.10 Basics: Create a New Layer (All Features Explained)

This GIMP Basics tutorial designed for beginners provides a deep-dive into the Create a New Layer dialogue. This feature in GIMP allows you to create new layers for your composition, and has a surprising amount of options that most GIMP users have never utilized. From color tags to composite modes, opacity to layer modes, I go over everything found in this handy dialogue.
I also cover some general topics surrounding layers to help you understand what layers are and how they work.

Thank you so much! I've spent the last four hours trying to figure out why 2.10 causes effects like the Soft Light paintbrush to affect multiple layers, whereas 2.8 affected only the layer to which it was applied. Your mention of the Alpha Lock feature at the end has finally cleared it up, and I appreciate it beyond telling!

Not necessarily - it depends on the image precision you have selected.

wow - THESE are the basics????? - yikes - I'd hate to see what the more intricate functions are - but thanks so much for your info - I have 2.10.4 and already I can see that some of the new features are "colored" performance/function buttons - would love to find out what some more features are .... but .... if I update ..... then just when I get used to things ..... updating will cause me to have to learn everything all over again :/

Some of you are a bit confused right now... Stick to doing technical stuff rather, and leave teaching to teachers. Just saying.

Right.... The reason why Im here is, because I want to learn something... So... If you do "tutorial" and you mention that I need to create a background ... why don't you stick with it from the very beginning? The obvious fact is that my knowledge of gimnp is negligible, so where, what and how with this "crerating new background" In other words, this tutorial will NOT be useful to me since I am not even able to do the first step that is required by the following steps. I'm not really sure what you're talking about, but I show you how the background layer is created at 2:15 - did you skip over that part?

It really isn't too long. While I would have liked a little more depth on the why something might be used, hence making it longer, it shows me there are a ton of option/features to the "new Layer" aspect I never knew, nor noticed.
