No. Loretta wasn't "stuck with Mama all those years".. it was the other way around. Loretta was a wallflower of a daughter, and she kept herself at home.. that is obvious. And no... Nell didn't have any real obligation to Maybelle.. because to put it simple.. yes, she was jealous of her older daughter. The whole "I'm bored" speech at the end was proof of that.. and even Maybelle didn't expect Nell to take care of her like that.
I like this episode with Nell and her mom Loretta arguing. It was pretty neat at the end. Great Show. Watching it June 3,21. 7:30pm

I haven't watched a comedy sitcom show in many years. So when I tried to watch a new show called "Call Me Kat" with that girl from the show "Blossom" Miyam Bialik, I was instantly disappointed wondering what the hell I was watching. But after watching this episode today I was just reminded of how well television producers did such a great job back in the day of creating characters, story lines and of course punch lines. The programming was overall much more entertaining back then and really kept you glued to the set.

This era was a bad time. People were ignorant, homophobic and there were lots of lies as well as emotional and physical abuse against wives. Husband's went out and got drunk came home slapped up the wives, molested the kids, hid it and got away with it, for years...until now ..Times up! The Mee too movement. Glad social Media is here to make everyone aware. People aren't as dumbed down anymore.

I was thinking, It's good to hear Nell's mother laugh, and then Nell said it out loud! This show is too funny for words!
A very well-written, entertaining episode Rosetta LeNoire was a true gem n very well cast....The exchange at 19:60 was brilliant, b/c if ya were able to receive the exchange, it brought the relationship home....At 20:45, when Nell asked her if the reason has been so hostile twd her all these years was because Nell had the courage to pursue her dreams....He mother never said "NO"....She replied "A mother is never jealous of her daughter...EVER"....while she knew it wrong to be Jealous/envious, does not mean she wasn't....Jelousy/envy are byproducts of the ego....n the ego does not live within the rational mind...it's feeds off the irrational mind....mny mistakenly believe "Free Will' is free to make our own choices n that is actually the secondary purpose...The primary purpose is to lead the ego vs following it...
Funny how Nell’s family totally changed names, faces, and personalities.
Whewww! Im glad Mama didnt go with Nell..I felt that jump for her in the end..BTW, Nell was physical for a woman her size. I love her confidence, and boy that voice!!💜🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

The chief was a burly man...By this episode, he looked less than 100lbs....I thought they did him an injustice by attempting to gloss over his death....They cld have at least given him a retrospective episode....Where in the S5 opening, the girls are going about their day2day as if nothing has changed...Nell think's they are repressing, the episode concludes of them finally breaking down or them returning from his funeral n sit around the table remembering the good times.

So we were all supposed to just forget that in the Season 1 episode: "Nell Goes Home", Nell's sister's name was Marie (Robyn Hastings) not Loretta, and that she was already married to Robert (Harrison Page)? Also, Nell got along just fine with her first mother, Emma, the ditz (not Maybelle), played by Hilda Haynes. It was her father, Rev. Harper (Hank Rolike) who resented her for leaving as a teen, not the mother.

I liked how they showed what contributed to the meanness which is often something rarely explored on these shows. You have parents who have children earlier than expected and find themselves putting their dreams and goals on the shelf to raise a family. They can become resentful if they see the child doing what they wanted to do or get angered if the child is not taking advantage of the opportunities. In later seasons, you see Nell really walk into the motherly role and step up to the girls stating they have way more opportunities available to them than she had.
Because I said so!!!

I saw this two-parter back when it first aired and had never seen Roretta Lenoire, then I watch an old Fantasy Island episode on TVland and there she was. I've since caught her in a very old tv presentation with Sal Mineo and a very young William Shatner, about a courtroom drama. It seems she was caught up in the Hollywood blacklist and had her career put on hold because of it. The funniest bit is 'Nell' is just like her mother, even tho she says she isn't. Parents often do go to the child less like them and butt heads with the one more like them. Sadly, Rosetta passed away in March, 2002, Nell died January of 2003 and 'Loretta', Lynn Thigpen died March 2003. Strange how she and Telma Hopkins both moved to Family Matters to conflict with Carl and they were all upstaged by Steve Urkel.
5:43 Ohhhhh the actress playing Addy’s mom starred in the All in the Family spinoff that became the Jeffersons. Love everything about this woman. Her beauty, her voice, her talent. But she must be Telma’s same age. Why would they have her play Addy’s mother?
Wait a minute, if they're from Alabama why don't I hear any Southern accent? Only the Asian lady.

They got rid of the Kiniskys, except for Joey, and did try to make Rosetta a 'cast regular' but either she wasn't too interested in it, or the show was about on its last leg then anyway. NBC was supposed to have a three-hour block with Gimme A Break, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court and Hill Street Blues, but Gimme A Break was the one critics didn't care for, and was moved to Saturday and was replaced with, surprise, surprise, The Cosby Show.

You just caught a continuity error which often happens in sitcoms. Rosetta is a different actress and mama was more mild tempered in the earlier seasons with a different actress. They made mama more mean in the later years. Also, they dropped Brenda, the younger sister who was the airhead. Often times, it's either a new set of writers who just take things in a new direction with no regards to previous character development or they wanted to create a new storyline. One of the joys of good TV, they can take us on many journeys and it's amazing that we didn't catch these things back during the TV run but now we see them
