The people ranting about the "fakeness" of her accent have never had an accent. Just think about how you switch from one way of talking to your friends to another way of talking to your boss. When you have a heavy accent, lived abroad for a number of years, or just interact with a different group for a while, you start talking different, naturally. Give it a try.

IrishEyes1989 You bring up a valid point that everyone has an accent. I respect that. I think we agree that when you're dropped into an environment where people speak differently than you do (especially if this move is made when you're a kid), some people/kids pick up the local accent, very quickly. We just adapt.

It's not that different really from speaking two languages fluently, which so many people do (I used to live in Montreal - it's super super common to meet people there who are native speakers in both french and english, and have no accent in either). If people can be bilingual with languages, why not with dialect or accents? Especially if you learned both fairly young and keep spending time in both environments.

Agreed. I love that she brings to light that this does actually happen. I love accents and pay attention to subtle nuances when people speak. I've caught myself slip into different accents subconsciously when I'm in different areas or around certain people. When I catch myself part of me gets nervous people will think I'm some weirdo "trying to be something I'm not", the other part of me thinks its fun and really interesting... and kind of hopes the longer I stay in the area the stronger it will get. lol

in fact, Think about it... Isn't it odd that people find it normal for a brit to take on an american accent, or "lose" their accent if they've been in the states for a little bit, but an American is considered a "fake" if they happen to pick up an English or any other one if they've been away?..

This is true. I often even find myself speaking differently with different sets of people, such as friends from uni vs friends from secondary school, et cetera... i've also lived in three different countries and find myself speaking in the accent of that country whenever i find myself with people from that country, regardless of where i am. Truly crazy and people have commented about how surprised they are when i switch almost immediately when speaking with different people

I spent my childhood bouncing between Canada and England. My accent reflects that. I speak to someone English and I have a strong english accent. I speak to Canadians and my accent changes. Day to day I have a hodgepodge combination. It happens. Eventually you end up going with whatever is comfortable and what those around you can understand. Incidentally, her accent is flawless.

luxx_interior No actually it’s not. It’s called “code switching” and it’s a very intelligent thing to do if you want to establish rapport and have a better connection with your audience. Calling someone a “poser” is indicative of ignorance. A poser is someone pretending to be someone they are not. Gillian is American and English. Her natural accent is kind of a blend between UK and US, but she plays up her American accent when she’s in the states and plays up her English accent when in England. And oftentimes its an unconscious thing to do because when you are around people speaking a certain way, you have a natural tendency to pick up the regionalisms and inflections without even trying.

mikey p To you they sound like they are still from England, but an English person would probably say they’re accent has changed! So it’s a matter of perspective. Plus, celebrities that travel back and forth across the pond steadily often never really lose their accent. It just becomes muddled in with their new accent.

I'm a big fan of Gillian Anderson, I think she's a phenomenal actress. And obviously drop dead gorgeous. Some things are just undeniable ;) Regarding the whole accent debate, I'll admit I used to be really put off by it, but I have a theory about it that I figure I might as well share here. She has spent roughly half her life living in the U.S. and the other half in the U.K., so presumably she has had just about as much exposure to American accents as British ones. I think what has happened is that she possesses some strange hybrid of the two accents, which would sound odd to most people (i.e. most likely the pronunciation of her vowels, as those are really the main differentiating points between different accents in the English-speaking world). Therefore, I believe that she reverts back and forth between the two accents in each of their respective continents/countries as required, simply to avoid embarrassment or confusion. Part of me can relate to this because I grew up between Canada and the U.S. and I have been told by people in both countries over the years that I have a "muddled" or "unidentifiable" accent. I often find myself drawing out the length of my vowels and cutting g's from the end of certain words when I am in the States, whereas when I'm back in Canada, my vowels become more clipped, my pronunciations a bit more precise. The reason we notice Gillian's accent changes so much is because of the dramatic difference between a standard Midwestern American accent and a standard RP English accent. To be honest, it's a social survival mechanism. We all subconsciously mimic the prevailing accent wherever we happen to live. We want to fit in and not stand out, so we change the way we speak. To sum up, I think Gillian's accent changes are deliberate but that she has a completely legitimate reason for switching back and forth. The bottom line is she's a fucking rock star either way :D

+IrishEyes1989 I totally understand the thought process. I live in the southern U.S. and most of my family lives in the north. In the south I'm asked where I'm from, but up north I get asked if I'm really from the south because my overall accent is neutral. Now, my accent goes more northern when I see family and stays fairly neutral down south. I also think, it's her way of blending into both countries.

The amount of people annoyed by petty thing, like her English accent here is ridiculous. Unbelievable, worst yet, they're not even brits. Gillian Anderson is half English/Irish & spent half amount of her life living in Britannia. Yet you riled up she picks up the accent? She is even so brit, she was initially having difficulty adjusting to midwest American accent when she was in America.

What is the purpose of this moronic argument?! The woman spent her most formative years in the UK, 2-11, making her default accent British - the American one was the one she had to adopt, not the other way round. And! She holds British citizenship!

  • @EranEdry

trha2222 I see what you're saying but you're going about this all wrong and treating her as an adult whereas you should be thinking about a two-year old Gillian Anderson. I'll give you a couple of examples. Alicia Silverstone - born and raised to an entirely British family but sounds as American as Peanut butter and jelly. Because she was raised in the States. Two close Israeli friends of mine moved to the US with their 3-year old girl in 2011. The kid only spoke Hebrew till then. Four years on and she sounds as native as they come despite both her Mum and Dad still speaking with the heaviest Israeli accent. Linguistic imprints on a child's mind are almost always permanent. You can't unlearn your default accent and a toddler's mind is one of the most pliable, adaptable things there are. If anyone has me incredulous, it's Portia deRossi whose Australian accent seemed to have faded out of existence virtually over night in her mid '20s when she immigrated to the US. There's nothing fake about Anderson's accent. She had to adapt as a human being, and add her being an actress to the mix, accent gymnastics come that much easier to actors...especially the better ones.

I think it is important not to judge her speech whether she is speaking with a British or American accent. Given that she has spent a significant amount of time in both the UK and US, I think it is fair to say that both are to a certain degree natural to her. Her British accent probably sounds a little more posh to Americans because of where she was educated and grew up in the UK. Whereas her American accent is more neutral and mid western influenced and does not stand out as much to the average American listener. I think she sounds fine both ways. I was born in the States but grew up in Canada so I can understand to some extent what it is like to adapt to speaking differently depending on where I am.

I should never look at the comment section when I'm watching something that includes Gillian speaking in a British accent, all these people bitching about her changing accents are driving me crazy. First of all, she's American-British. Or British-American, I'm not sure which one it is or if it even matters. Anyway. She's not just American, she's not just British. She's lived in both countries for years so she's fluent in both accents and subconsciously switches them depending on who she's talking to. It's a thing and she's not the only person in the world who does that. It should be a relatively easy concept to grasp, considering that people who fluently speak several languages exist as well and nobody ever questions that. Second of all, if her British accent bothers you so fucking much, then why are you here yelling about it instead of somewhere else where you wouldn't have to listen to her "fake" accent????

It is not a case of "using" any accent. I was born in the UK and lived in South Africa from the age of 8. As we all had British accents in the home, I would get laughed at by my school friends because when I spoke to my parents, I spoke with a British accent, yet, when I turned and spoke to my friends in the next breath, I spoke with a South African accent. I did not do it deliberately and did not even know it was happening. I have many friends who have the same "problem" and none of them are aware it is happening either. Even today, when I speak to my children who are in South Africa, my SA accent comes to the fore and when I speak to my friends here in the UK, I sound like a Brit. It is not a conscious decision or act to "change accents".

+littleollieowl as someone who was raised in 5 different countries across asia, been to 8 schools (3 were american international schools and 5 were british schools) and let me tell you this is a genuine thing. My accent alternates between english and american depending on who i'm talking to. im from the uk but go to uni in canada now ahah but i honestly don't see why you're so skeptical about this?? this was fairly normal for a lot of the people i know who were raised in international communities.

I had a British co-worker who I didn't even know was British until she pronounced one word in particular with a distinctly British accent. Before that I had thought she was American! She has never lived in the US.
