I'm an old man. All my life, Gillette has been regularly coming up with "miracle" innovations that transform the shaving experience, or so they say. I guess they maxed out on how many blades they could add so, now, we get the "exfoliating" bar. Sounded to me like more of the same from Gillette, and I'm a little ashamed of paying any attention at all. I guess that they bank on the fact that all men go through periods when they get particularly dissatisfied with their shaving experience, which is unnatural and never quite what we wished for. Really appreciate this fair and trustworthy evaluation.

I hear ya and agree. I don’t think every iteration of every Gillette model has value. I think it’s often a marketing gimmick. However I do think the Gillette Labs is a very comfortable and efficient cartridge, it’s my favorite. But I also simultaneously think it’s overpriced and that the exfoliating thing is just a gimmick. Big thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experiences!

I've been using DE razors and creams until recently I was given this razor as a gift. It really changed my thoughts - could get a totally smooth and comfortable shave in just a few minutes. On top, the foam had a nice aroma and was not harsh on my skin at all. And the final benefit was that a single blade lasted over a month for me (15 shaves) before I felt it had to be replaced. This is the first 'modern' razor I have really appreciated since the original Mach 3. You can find the Gllette Labs stuff on special offer in most shops here, so it helps to shop around for sure!

I think the Gillette Labs provides an efficient shave too. It’s definitely a different vibe and easier than a DE safety razor. Are you official switched from DE safety razor back to cartridge razors? I ask because safety razor enthusiasts are usually pretty passionate. I agree that the exfoliating bar is a gimmick and just a weird claim as shaving itself is already exfoliating, therefore the brand is just doing the claim but in a sneaky way. Shaving is a physical exfoliation, there is really no point with that exo. bar. Thus, this razor is just for the luxury experience. Which is nothing wrong with that at all. Also great video. You do know what you are talking about, as one use does not determine its capability at all and that you did your research to an extent. It was enjoyable to watch!! 👍👍

Thanks for this review. I just subbed to you also because I like your approach. I’ve been into traditional wet shaving for several years now and haven’t used many cartridges recently. Occasionally Gillette will release a product that sparks my interest. Because of bumps and irritation and the fact I’m a face and head shaver I was excited for the Skinguard, but that large block in the middle made it so it wasn’t efficient enough for me…I like the idea of this even though I’m concerned about the multi blade I thought having the add on of exfoliating might help and do something similar to using a shaving brush. In any event I just got on with a coupon for Target for $20. Lol if I don’t like it I’ll give it away, not much risk here.

$20 is absolutely worth taking a flyer on. I think the Gillette Labs gives really smooth shave. I think it could possibly help with irritation by being efficient and should require fewer strokes. But it is a big cartridge so it’s a lot going over your face at once also. So traditionally you shave with water only? Thanks a bunch for the sub and comment!!

I saw this razor on a deal at Amazon for 35$ CAD including travel case, the razor (well... if you don't get it there is a problem lol) and 3 cartridges. I've been a longtime user of the Gillette Flexball technology razors. However, my latest blades (ProGlide SkinGuard) weren't what I was expecting. Sure it's a great shaving experience for sensitive skin (this is what they are aimed at), but in the end the result is pretty disappointing from my standpoint. So, I knew I would need to buy my good old beloved cartridges again (ProShield). At a retail price of 41.75$ CAD for 8 refills of the ProShield, or 45$ CAD for the same quantity of ProShield Chill refills, or going with a handle and 5 refills for 30$ CAD, I felt I could go and try for the Exfoliating bar gimmick for 35$ CAD. If it's a failure, I'll just to back to my previous roots. If it's a success, then I'll have a new habit. I'm really rooting for ultra close shaving (shaving my face only), in which the Philips OneBlade and Proglide Skinguard aren't giving the kind of shave I want. They even made me reduce my shaving habits because of how bad of a shaving experience they were giving: OneBlade gives some kind of itchy feeling, while the SkinGuard doesn't shave close enough to my liking. I even once had tried the Dollar Shave Club, but I had to leave them because of how often I was getting my face cut because of their way too sharp blades. I'm supposed to get the exfoliating razor the day after tomorrow. I'm really curious about how my experience will be with that razor compared to the previous blades I was using.

Hey it’s definitely worth a try! I’m really curious to know what you think when you finally try it? I think you’ll find it’s a comfortable and efficient shave. But I also suspect the experience will be similar to the Pro Glide Shield, both razors look really similar and both have flexball and a 5 blade cartridge. I’ve never used the the Pro Glides (gonna try next) but I really think the shaves will be similar especially since I don’t feel the exfoliating bar adds much to the experience. @@fitnessnbeer9835 I suspect the razor to be a simple gimmick in the end. If it ends up it doesn't shave my beard as I would like it to be shaved, I'll simply won't buy refills when I'll be done with my 3 cartridges and then I'll simply venture into trying King C. Gillette's Safety Razor, which retails to around 37$ CAD for the initial buy, then the refills are non-expensive, costing around 80¢ each, for a total of less than 10 bucks for 10 refills.

I have a vibrating gillette that I have had for years and still works as new. They were like dang how do we get people to buy new handles so they took the part that is normally on the blade and made it a part of the handle. Pro tip get those monitors on stands that make the middle of the screen eye level. Looking down causes that hump on the back of the neck from craning your neck for prolonged time. Buy a Merkur 34C off Amazon for about $45. It will last forever and uses double edged razor blades. You can buy a 100 pack of Astra green double edge blades for $9.00. You’ll get a closer shave with less irritation. It’s easy to use and you’re no more likely to nick yourself than using a cartridge razor.

I’ve got 2 of the Labs razors. I’ve used the White Bic disposable razors for years. For me the Gillette Lab razor gives an ok shave. I noticed no difference with the exfoliation strip good or bad. The Lab razor is very pricey compared to everything else, and hard as hell to install the new blades. I’ve tested most of the razors out there-including the electrics. MY 5 BLADE BIC DISPOSABLE OUT PERFORMS EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE TESTED IT AGAINST AND ITS MORE AFFORDABLE . So,because of cost and NOT being the best I have to give it a thumbs down. I’d give it a B as far as a close shave goes, most of the 4 or 5 blade disposables beat it.

Thanks for the review, can I use other gillette razors with the NEW lab handle?. I can't seem to find this information anywhere, and I prefer the Gillette sensitive blade but want to make sure it will fit this handle. The last generation of handles have a slight design flaw with the thin metal strip that handles the pilot from side to side, which tends to break after time leaving the handle useless. This handle seem to be a more enclosed design, which is hopefully a good thing. What is funny is that shaving itself is exfoliating for your face, there is no need to add anything else to the blade to do a better job of it. Every time Gillette comes out with a new blade the price goes up, they really need to stop!

Since I could no longer find Atra replacement blades I decided that maybe it's time to purchase a new razor. I looked at what Target had to offer and decided to try Harry's. After a few shaves I wasn't sure that liked it and went back to Target and bought the Gillette Labs razor. It's the most expensive one that Gillette has to offer. To my surprise, Harry's did just as good a job in shaving as the Gillette Labs at half the cost. They were both quite a change from shaving with my Atra that I had been using for decades so it has been a little getting used to learning curve that I have been experiencing. I liked the handle on the Gillette slightly better than Harry's but it isn't worth the price difference. The stand for the Gillette is nice but not necessary and not worth the extra cost. The exfoliating thing is just a marketing gimmick so pay no attention to that. If you are running a razor over your skin, you and definitely exfoliating it.

Me and my wife were visiting our local Boots store yesterday afternoon, and they have the new Gillette but at a reduced price. £15. Instead of £22. I've had my eye on it for ages so I decided to get it. I tried it for the first time this afternoon and it was a very enjoyable experience to shave with it. It's a really nice razor and I hope that the blade supplied with it lasts a long time. Our local Boots sells a pack of 6 blades for just under £27 and that's the cheapest you can buy them.

It's a way of saving and spending money when you see something that you want. Anyway I saw a pack of the blades I fancied so I asked my wife if I could cash some Nectar points for the blades. She said okay, so I bought a pack of 6 (it was either that or a pack of 4) for the sum of £5.45. Better than paying £27.

The basic claim is that the exfoliating bar clears away the dirt and allowing for a cleaner shave. Sounds good but any thinking man simply washes his face and rinses it before applying the shaving gel or cream (mousse), and just shaves his beard. Personally, I see no need for that exfoliating bar, and since I've been using Harry's for a good while now, I'm pleasantly satisfied, and it's cheaper.

It was really eye opening to feel the difference between blades at the same time. The Mach3 wasn’t officially in the competition but I tried and compared it anyway. Clearly exfoliating is a gimmick. What I want to know is for how long after the first shave do I need to replace the cartriage? I know the shaving will be smooth on the first day but how long will the smoothness last before it's time to replace it? How long before it loses it's sharpness...because those cartrages are ridiculously expensive. Does more expensive mean longer lasting? Or it means "GOTCHA"...we made you pay more and nothing changed.

REAL MEN should use a double edge safety razor with a razor handle and blade suitable for your skin type. Prior to 1 year ago, all I knew of were these cartridge razors from Gillette, Schick, Dollar, Harry's etc. Multi blade cartridges can give you a baby bottom smooth shave but at what price. They are getting very expensive plus they dull quickly after 2 or 3 decent quality shaves. The economics of them for that few shaves of good quality is not worth the high prices for them. A double edge blade is only pennies even if you use 1 blade once or twice. I learned from the KZreadrs how to use a De Safety razor and I am wowed! I don't have to apply pressure on the razor and I use a mild razor such as Merkur 34C and some Gillette Silver blues (smooth but sharp enough) and get baby bottom smooth skin. Zero redness, zero painful ingrown hairs. I can use it every day if I want to and have the confidence to dispose of a blade after 1 shave because they are almost free. 🍁 🍁
