GIGN's MR73 Sniper Revolver in .357 Magnum

/ forgottenweapons
Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Courtesy of the French Ministry of the Interior, we have a chance to take a look at an authentic GIGN sniper model MR73 revolver today. GIGN is the elite intervention element of the French Gendarmerie, akin to GSG9 in Germany or the FBI Hostage Rescue Team in the US. Back in the 1970s, the service was looking for a standard sidearm, and wanted something capable of significant stopping power, immediate use from the holster, maximum accuracy, and an exceptionally long lifespan. The .357 Magnum cartridge was chosen, and the Manurhin company designed the MR-73 revolver specifically to provide the desired accuracy and the durability to maintain that accuracy through years of daily training use.
The MR73 was purchased and used mostly with 4" and 5" barrels, but a small number were also purchased by GIGN with 8" barrels, to be made into scoped sniper models. These were fitted with a Harris bipod on custom mount, and a Bushnell 2.5x pistol scope. Outfitted this way, they were capable of pinpoint precise shots in very tight quarters where a rifle would not be a practical option. They were not meant to replace rifles in all situations; GIGN is one of those elite agencies with great latitude in arms procurement. This scoped revolver was one of many options available in their arsenal, for particular situations calling for it.
That said, GIGN have deliberately cultivated the image of being first-tier operators who deliberately choose to use the revolver as a powerful and classy old-school weapon - although this is mostly done for ceremonial duties today.

@rwsthedemonking That's just not true, the MR73 is carried by almost every single GIGN operative, as a sidearm, even if they already have a sidearm. That's only true if you look at how often they got shot, which is quite rarely, but if you look at all GIGN operations, they never really shoot in the first place IIRC it's about 98% of missions have no rounds fired. But if you mean range only as in it's carried only on the range, it's demonstrably false. There is a case to be made about actual use however, but not a very good one.

@rwsthedemonking What? A tactically good gun? The MR73 was extremely customizable, hell we're watching a video about a sniper-revolver. It's very accurate, has a good grip, sighing, no safety, and most importantly, extremely fucking reliable. Hell I'd say this is probably one of the most tactically sound firearms you could choose. The only sidearm I can even think to compare it to is the HK Mk23, and that's meant to substitute for a rifle.

You seem to be under the misconception that the GIGN replaced their auto pistols with revolvers.... that wasn't the case. The GIGN carried, and still often carries today, BOTH a semi-auto pistol and the revolver. It makes sense in the original GIGN mission framework which was strongly oriented to hostage rescue in very crowded environment (in particular the MR73 was very successful during highjacked plane intervention) where few accurate shots are essential. Also the GIGN kept the "shoot to disable" rather than kill well into the 2000. Remember that the GIGN unlike the SAS is a purely police oriented unit, they will not be used in a military theater. The MR73 was also associated with a specific ammunition (the THV, you can google it), very light, very fast, etremely effective against both soft tissues and the body armor of that era. But the THV didn't cycle well in semi-auto but were great in a 357mag... especially one built to withstand higher than usual pressures.

Back in the 90s, Jeff Cooper decried the spray and pray cop shootings. He proposed arming cops with Ruger Blackhawks in .357 magnum. The police seem to emphasize mag changes over marksmanship. Actions at the point of contact are the result of training. Then there is the tendency of law enforcement agencies, AND applicants, to utilize the internet for recruiting. So, some newbie from Bugtussell hires on to work in Dallas or Atlanta based on their aptitude score in Nowheresville U.S.A. police academy. Oh yeah, all those cops from WokeA Stan are headed your way. Y'all have a GOODN.

I am French. And to correct one thing you said. The GIGN goes also on missions outside France. But it concern only the Paris GIGN with is the REAL GIGN. There are others GIGN antennas all around France but not as well trained like The Paris GIGN unit. So they've already had mission in Africa to free French prisoners from terrorist. They also went to Afghanistan for the same reasons, and they also do Top Secret Mission with the Commandos Marine (witch are the pinnacle of the French army). And just to say the Gendarmery is also part of the military. So the GIGN is a military special force witch acts in France ost of the time and witch can act outside France. And to finish, there is also a unit like this but in the French police witch is called The RAID.

They usually cover the rural parts of France, while the national police is concentrated in the more urban areas. So, basically, they are cops with military ranks.

I´ve heard that one GIGN got shot and still managed to kill three terrorists with such a revolver, after he was shot in the right arm, which is quite remarkable, as he was badly injured, there were plenty of non-targets and the terrorists had automatic rifles. Speaking of planes, AFAIK, only the Austrian special police ever managed to end a hostage situation in a plane whilst it was flying at high altitude. The thing was, that one of its members was off duty when some idiot pulled a weapon right next to him...

@@K3end0 I think so. I, however, find it less amazing than the prior one. I´d very much like the odds of the second scenario as even a highly trained professional can get sucker-punched and taking away a weapon from an untrained person, while being highly trained yourself doesn´t sound too risky. The French cop, on the other hand, had a busted arm, was in great pain and had lost a lot of blood. Even without all this hardly any cop would fancy a shootout against three terrorists with only a revolver in your non-dominant hand, let alone when they already know your position and you can´t just fire back willy nilly without risking shooting civilians...
