Gigi - Leslie Caron's own voice - I Don't Understand the Parisians

Фильм және анимация

Here is Leslie Caron's track synched to the released film (in which she was dubbed by Betty Wand). This track fit perfectly for the first chorus but nothing else. It required more futzing than any other clip I've done, and here's the reason:
From Hugh Fordin's book "M-G-M's Greatest Musicals"
Lerner complained abourt Caron's rendition of "Parisians." The comment was "Too fast." Arthur Freed turned to [vocal director] Nena Simone, "Try to slow it down somewhat." And to Lerner, "She'll do it." Simone addressed Andre Previn. "For once, it's yours! You slow it down!"
The following week began with Caron lip-synching to Betty Wand in a slower version of "The Parisians." Then came a pickup shot of her sitting on a Victorian bench in a park on Lot 2. Three days later the retakes were finished.
_____________________________
Interesting, but it doesn't match with the tracks. I had to speed up Caron's voice considerably, not slow it down, to make this fit. Either way, I think she's charming.
Fortunately, I was able to strip out Betty Wand's vocal and keep the MGM orchestra - sweet!

Caron's version is more character driven, while Wand's version is more focused on getting the singing right.

Its really cute. I like the expression in her voice. But I can see for a major musical how it was a no go , standards for musicals being what the were.. I love this film! Thanks for this,!

Thanks for this. I always thought Caron's voice on the piano prerecording worked so much better. Betty Wand is the more expert singer, but Caron's vocal captures who the character actually is. It seems so obvious to me that the decision they made feels baffling.

Leslie Caron is beyond adorable in this film. One of the best musicals ever. I also find it interesting that Miss Caron played in two films with two of the wonderful Gabor sisters...Zsa Zsa Gabor in _Lili_ and Eva in _Gigi_ .

Wow! All these years and I thought the voice I heard was hers! Didn't know she was dubbed! Her voice wasn't bad on this song but I can see it wouldn't fly later on Say A Prayer for Me Tonight. But here I am thinking for over 60 years she's doing her own singing!

@@sharigreen9252 - Betty Wand possessed an amazing vocal talent. She also dubbed _part_ of Rita Moreno's role as Anita in the film version of _West Side Story_ - in that's awesome, she was joined by Marni Nixon, another fantastic vocalist who dubbed the singing in some of our favorite movie musicals.

@@tejaswoman I knew about Betty Wand dubbing for Rita Moreno. Didn't know she dubbed for Leslie. And yes, Marnie Nixon was the "Queen" of the subnets having lent her voice to Deborah Kerr (King and I and Affair To Remember) and of course Natalie Wood in WSS.

I think she did a Bang Up job singing this song. Seems to me that with just a little tweaking the studio could have used her voice since they let the other 3 principals use theirs.

More realistic, though, maybe because of the recording, she doesn't have the depth with the vocal, after all it is an original Lerner and Lowe musical and maybe the studio didn't want to hedge bets.

It makes sense that MGM dubbed in vocals from a professional vocalist since singing was not Caron’s strong suit-esp since MGM had an abundance of wildly talented singers on the payroll. But even if they had used Caron’s voice, it would not have been this version, correct? I think even Judy Garland sang the lyrics during filming but also recorded the song in a sound studio setting to dub into the soundtrack. So it’s a bit of an unfair comparison.

Not unfair at all, since this is the track she recorded to be used. All the vocal tracks for Gigi were recorded in Paris, with only Andre Previn at the piano - the MGM Orchestra was added later. By the time this number was filmed, back in Hollywood, Leslie knew she was being dubbed and sang to Betty Wand's recording. But this was the track she thought would be used had they used her voice.

Makes sense that the musical numbers would be dubbed in. I don't see how a boom mic can possibly pick up a singing voice in a pleasing manner. But I don't mind a single bit here. After all, it's Leslie Caron! 😍

A necklace is love, A ring is love, A rock from some abnoxious little king is love, A diamond studded star is love, A ugly black cigar is love, Everything you are is love, You'd think it would embarrass all the people here in Paris, To be thinking every minute of love. I don't understand the Parisians, Making love every time they have the chance, I don't understand the Parisians, Wasting every lovely night on romance. Any time, And under every tree and town, their incession two by two, what a crime, with all there is to see in town, they can't find something else to do. I don't understand how Parisians, Never tire of walking hand in hand, But they seem to love it, And speak highly of it, I don't understand the Parisians. I don't understand the Parisians, Making all this to do about La'more, I don't understand the Parisians, All this la-di-da is so immature, When it's warm, They take good care outside at night, Close their eyes, Hug, And kiss, When It's cold, They simply move inside at night, There must be more to let them miss. I don't understand the Parisians, Thinking love's so maraculous, And grand, But they rave about it, Amd won't live without it, I don't understand the Parisians...
