Today I'm taking a look at the sound difference between a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Gibson SG Standard! Using the same amp setting, same guitarist (err.. me) & Just playing about on the bridge pickup, mid position and neck pickup of both guitars to see how different they sound.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments - which do you prefer the look or sound of? Did you notice any difference at all? Is the sound mainly in the amp settings and the player's own unique style more than the guitar itself?

As seen in other videos, they sound a bit similar, although LP sounds rounder and SG, sharper. I´m a bit suspicious to say which is better, since I have an LP.

As an owner of both I can say I prefer playing the SG because it’s more comfortable, lighter, and easier to play. I definitely prefer the look of the LP though and mine even has a AAA top. I also find the LP has a fuller and more rounded tone with more sustain than the SG’s more biting and aggressive tone. I ultimately love them both.

I own both, as well, and I agree with everything you said. SGs have a great design and look fantastic but a Les Paul is sort of a work of art. The reason so many pros play them even today is because that belly carve really attracts a lot of attention on stage from the crowd. Even if they don't realize it, their eyes are drawn to. To me, that makes playing one live worth it, as long as it's not a pre-weight relief model.

I so want to be a les Paul guy with Slash inspiring me to start playing guitar. But the SG just sounds better and is easier to play, it’s lighter and more comfortable. Also so much of the older music I listen to has been played on SG with the doors, Clapton in cream, Jimi Hendrix with red house, ac/dc, black sabbath to name a few. It’s the sound my ears prefer.

I'm also partial to the SG these days. In the past, Ive owned several les pauls and one sg, so I've had enough time to figure it out. Personally, I don't think the les paul offers anything substantial that the sg doesn't. Therefore, I can't justify the physical weight of the lp, nor the weighty price tag, for whatever differences exist. The arguments for "sustain" and "fatter tone" are kind of irrelevant to my purposes. I'd gladly sacrifice those factors in favor of improved ergonomics.

I've owned both, I never bonded with the LP and eventually traded it in for a Princeton 12" and didn't miss it. This spring I ordered an SG exactly like yours and it's thrilling to play. Rob, I too have an SG and an LP. My SG has the batwing guard like yours, and I adjusted the pickups to be level with the strings-like the LP-and the SG sounded more articulate. Try it-it doesn't require any drilling , just some foam under the pickups and perhaps a tiny bit of filing in the pickguard to allow the pickups to tilt more forward if they're a tight fit. If you don't care for it you can go back and no harm done. To my ears it sounded more even but everyone's taste is different.

I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard from around the same time. I believe that the pickups in it would be 490R and 498T. Correct me if I’m wrong but your 2019 SG will have a 490R and 490T. So in theory the same neck pickup type and I believe that the main difference between the 498T and 490T is that the 498T is a bit more overwound for higher output.

The LP has a fuller, richer, more big and open sounding tone. The gain saturates the signal in the LP a bit more leading to fluid, liquid sounding bends - where as the SG sounds more "dry". I am a recent convert to the idea of an SG, so I want to love it. I have had a Gibson LP for a yr and a half, and the ergonomics of the SG are starting to look appealing. Also, I really dig the look now! Go figure - I always hated the SG shape! Now I totally dig it!. I heard someone put it like this and I tend to agree: An SG growls, A Les Paul roars! (And a PRS purrs..) Great video, Bro, thanks!

With full gain not much of a difference in tone. When played clean I believe is when you can hear a difference, and that is the LP has a full bodied, warmer tone suited for jazz and blues while the SG has a thinner, brighter tone suited for rock and country. Physically the SG is user friendly by way of its light weight, thin body, double cutaways, all accessible frets, and easy to reach controls. The flat fingerboard makes it ideal for slide as Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, and Mick Taylor will attest. In contrast, the LP has attained Rolls Royce status by way of its lofty price tag , exquisite styling, and rock star pedigree.

I personally like to Play SGs more, for theyre way way lighter (im a tall but quite a slim guy, standing with a LP for over an hour actually makes my back hurt and is quite exhausting), i also like the slimmer neck more and the reachability of the higher frets is just amazing (even when using thumb techniques on low e string). Objectively soundwise.. id Say the Les Paul has definatly more pronounced/agessive hights, while the SG has stronger mids. (To me it makes the SG sound a bit more "Balanced" ) + when you got a "good" SG ... its just an amazing feel that you can feel the whole thing really vibrating while playing ^^ You maybe just need to get used to the bit of neckdive and stuff like that... But i never felt like i had to "fight" it, its more like that you get to learn how the guitar likes to be held :P (what im talking about, you actually can see in the video that he tends to hold the SG more upright. coz that eliminates the neckdive ;) at least its the same thing i do to compensate ) My dark Blue 1995 Limited edition, it is a bit of a "beast" that totally has his own personality ;) and thats actually the reason i love her :D

Personally, i could take either for the bridge pickup, but the neck pickup on the SG sounds better. I want another SG, but realize it will take a while to get used to that.

One thing that often escapes you in a casual glance at both is that the neck pickup in an SG is much closer to the bridge so neck position is definitely less “muddy’”/more defined. Obviously major differences in the construction of both give you a sonic contrast between the two. Les Paul: more low end and seemingly scooped in the mids because of the lows. SG: less low end cos it’s thinner and the neck joint is way less ‘solid’ (but doesn’t seem to affect sustain IME which is good) which lets the highs and mids speak more.

coldwar1977 Maybe a difference in our definitions here, but we’re essentially saying a similar thing...plus everyones ears are different which is why there’s no ‘one answer/guitar fits all’. That scooped neck EQ sound of the LP gives the impression of an openness which you hear...a classic tone for sure. I love both! More expensive 😂

I was a Les Paul guy since 1991. I wasn't paying regular as a working man, and sold my axe. My money went into my sons drums. In 2015 my neighbors granddaughter was learning guitar and needed an amp. I took her looking for a used one, and ended up with an SG for myself. I think I am stuck now, and it doesn't really fit my genre. I have 2 Jacksons, 3 LP, and 1 SG.(among others) I want another I can change the pickups on. The SG is currently my go to axe. I'm kinda' a Slayer guy and along that line, but I also like bands like Black 47, and Social Distortion. Any tips from anyone on tips for the pickups of the SG I will be getting soon? I really want a chugger. My current is staying stock. I'm keeping my LP's, but I'm not even picking them up these days. Thank you.

The pickups are closer on the Sg, if you look at the LP the neck pickup is located closer to the neck. This gives a a brigther tone in position 2 and 3. In bridge position the sound is almost similar.

On a batwing pickguard SG, the bridge pickup has a tilt towards the bridge instead of flush with the strings. That drives a lot of players mad but some SG players I know like that quark.

While I prefer the LP's tone, I almost always pick up my SG instead. My LP weighs 10.6 pounds and the SG is 3 or more pounds lighter. The SG is more comfortable and also has much better upper fret access.

Hardly any difference , don't think many would recognize the difference if blindfolded, les paul has more of a palette in sounds with makes is more versatile , but the way you use your amp has a lot to do with it too.

Hey cool video. In the case of the SG, which one would you suggest to get for the SG Standard or the SG '61 Re-issue, for Classic Hard Rock, AC/DC, Sabbath, Beatles, Stones that kind of stuff. Have you ever tried the Gibson SG'61?

The Les Paul Pickups must be 498T / 490R, wich was the standard humbucker configuration for the LPs in the 90's, except for some particular models (LP Classic, LP Deluxe). The SG Standard pickups are 490T / 490R. The 498T has a higher level output than the 490T.

Not really that good of a comparison. Pick ups are playing a massive part in this. I own 3 Lps and a 61 reissue sg. Up till about a month ago the Lps won hands down on tone. But I've just had some high end PAF clones, 50s wiring, bone nut and other bits done and the SG has come alive. Plays so much better. They're both excellent playing, sounding guitars. Obviously a LP will have more sustain over an sg due to the thickness of the body. But in whole I couldn't choose a favourite.

Nice comparison, thanks! And I would like to share a point regarding the ergonomics: Yes, you are right, this point goes to the SG, and at the same time the SG feels much longer and has some significant neck dive issues, while the LP is more compact. Thanks for your good job!

SG sounds like a beautiful blonde (Kelly in "Married with children" type) who yells at you with that screaming voice, high notes and makes you love her more and more. It lifts you off the ground makes you feel lighter... Les Paul is like the legally music teacher who demands clear notes but not such of a same thrill. It just keeps you on the ground. In simple words, SG creates a sound that lasts longer like an echo and hits highs with louder warmer sounds. Les Paul hits more at lows and maybe little louder but overall the sound that comes out just doesn't stay for longer time.
