Today's video was a suggestion from one of my subscribers to compare my Fender Stratocaster with my Gibson SG. Obviously there's going to be quite a bit of difference in the characteristics of each guitar as they're 2 totally different animals - but them being similar in more of a shape/body type I thought this would be cool to do - but don't ask me to pick a favourite as it would be like trying pick my favourite child... if I had kids...
Side note - any sudden jumps in volume were left in intentionally to display the different output of the guitars on the different pickup positions.
thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the video!

I have both of them.2 totally different guitars in any aspect. The SG is very aggressive ,with fat, clear and sharp sound, fat neck ,strong bass on drive and clean, sharp and very clear and strong treble especially on the clean channel. In order to control all this you must have a good amp to use a volume button . Strat on the other hand is very well balanced , simple and versatile guitar , plays much more easier than SG ,but lacks the power.I'll go with the SG.

Have a look at Pete Townsend at IoW or Live at Leeds. Listen to The Doors. .”Clapton’s The Fool! The fabulous Frank Marino! Not even got to Iommi yet. The Paul is definitely too thick and muddy.

Rob, thanks a lot for this comparison, it is great like all your videos. May I ask for another video? Many articles/reviews/posts say that it is impossible to get the clean tone of a Strat with any Gibson, because of the pickups, wood, scale length, etc. I was wondering with different settings on SG and amp, and specially by using an equalizer pedal, how close the SG's tone can get to the Strat's (single coil). Since you and most professionals have both guitars, you should not care if SG sounds like Strat, but for many beginners who can buy only one guitar, this is very important and it is a main reason to pick Strat over SG. Thanks again for making this great video.

I’m a little surprised by the comments here. To me the SG sounds dull and muddy. Fine for heavy distortion but that’s it for me. The strat cuts. It can be clean, searing, cutting, it can made more dark in tone as desired. Bottom line, though, one is designed to fit the human body and play naturally and one is designed to have both hands off to one side and is designed to dive to the floor.

Could you tell which you like the feel of better as a player... I own a Gibson SG and a friend of mine has a Strat... and i really dig the shorter scalelenths of the gibson for how smooth playing feels. Also i like the double cut acessabilities on higher scales. But i would like to hear your opinion on that :) in Clear the singlecoil strat sounds better but Humbucker SG wins in high gain (especially if you hear them live thorugh a good amp) In music styles id say, Fender for Funk, Gibson for Blues, Jazz they both would work ;) ;) Thats why i really dig P90s (even the humbucker sized ones) they kinda do both jobs very well ;)

@@RobGalley Well if i only could have 1 electric guitar i think id pick a mahagony with maple top "PRS style" (bodyshape, neckshape and scalelenghts) 24 fret guitar with P90s (or MAYBE even Mini Humbuckers) in it ^^ coz it has best of both worlds for me. Great cleans (not as muddy as regular humbuckers) and great gain-sound (Love that P90 singlecoilyness that has some "soul" behind it that makes it really vocal)... I mean if we Can have only 1 should be as versatile as possible, right? ;) Especially since i notices on my P90 guitar if i roll the volume very far back, funny enough, its starting to sound preatty close to the strat (not 100% of cause but like 85% :P ) . But i dont know if that counts coz you werent comparing that :D

Uncle Teds Birdlanders are UGLY guitars "I think" but I guess they too are great. Nothing ever feels as right to me as a Les Paul, anytime I play anything else then go back and pick up the Les Paul it's like coming home again. They just fit my playing and feel so right to me and nothing sounds like a Les Paul😊 I knew as a kid when I saw Jimmy Page with one "that has to be a pretty special guitar" I was right! I love the Strat for clean tones and faux-acoustic strumming, but for dirtier lead playing the SG was way better with round, howling, almost Leslie-cabinet tones.

Probably already bought your guitar, but I think your first electric guitar purchase should be based on which guitar inspires you to play based on its looks. When you are a new player you are not going to know what "feels good" until you have played for many many hours. I choose my guitar based on looks and every time I looked at it in the corner of my room I got an endorphin rush and had to start practicing because I liked to imagine that I was my guitar hero that inspired me to pick up the instrument in the first place.

I've been playing Strat's for over 50 years. I finally went to an SG, as I was getting a little tired of the thinner sound of a maple neck. I'm blown away by the SG with 57 classic pups. Most listeners said the SG sounded best for rock. They are right. The Strat has many more sounds than the SG and really good neck and out of phase sounds. The SG is more of a one trick pony, warm for clean and bitey for rock. Because of it's warmth, though, it can get lost in the mix, unless perfectly dialed in.

Basically, any Gibson (LP, SG, 335) will sound warmer than Fender because of its construction and the fact that Fender-style single coils are brighter. Also, most Fender guitars have longer scale, which makes them snappier. Having said that, SGs are noticeable brighter than many other Gibsons, particularly the Les Paul, and even more when they have P90s, which, for me, are the best SGs. Just ask Pete Townshend or Carlos Santana.

These are the two guitars I own, I have been playing for 4 years and started on a strat, a very comfortable guitar for me so I always considered myself a strat guy. Even though I always loved my strat I found myself wanting to try humbuckers just for the different sound. I considered a HSS but I also wanted a humbucker in the neck and I think and wasn't digging any HH strats. So I grabbed an ebony SG standard off the wall and have been enjoying that. For a 2000$ guitar it isn't perfect and has some minor issues (not perfectly smooth all the way up the neck, feel a tiny ridge near the dots on the lower frets, some knobs are perfectly smooth, the drilling of the bridge could have been more delicate and cleaned up better)but it's a great guitar. It's light like a strat, thin body like a strat, super versatile beyond acdc and fun to play. Was cool to just pick the one that caught my eye off the wall and learn to love it for all it's quirks. But the stuff I have written on my SG I would never have done with my strat. So moving forward I'll be buying different kinds of guitars to see if they keep bringing out cool things before I settle into one kind. Strat is still my desert island guitar though.

SG great for hard rock Sabbath, Ozzy kinda stuff, one note is pretty intense and can hold its own. Strat think Jimi Hendrix etc, xlnt blues and needs to play lots of notes to get the intensity. I've been a strat man for eons but secretly love Gibson, Ozzy, Zep and all the rest. Just a matter of preference. I own both and I prefer........Both! I just can't imagine Randy Rhoads playing a strat or Jimi Hendrix playing a Les Paul SG just different beasts. Ok ok I prefer the Gibson cause it has searing burning lead guitar tone. Ok I said it.

The Gibson SG is gives off a better clean sound..they’re light, & have that aggrressive sound when using gain/peddles..but the sg is best with a Mashall amp..as far as fenders goes (clean) has always a more ‘twangy’/blues sound; where as the Sg with peddles/amp settings, you can basically make the SG sound like a fender...Gibson & Marshall amp is prob best combo (clean, les paul sounds better, but the SG is gibsons best selling guitar due to it sounding very very similar the Les Paul, with much less weight & better feel in hands) No Doubt Gibson SG is more pure..but with different peddles..& different settings on the Amp...id take the Gibson SG all day. Solid guitar 2 great pick-ups (humbuckers - 490R (neck) & 498T (bridge)..2 adjustment knobs for each Pick-up...not to mention i personally love the herriage cherry SG.. classy with wood finish/solid guitar *SG*. I think the Standard SG with a Marshall amp & quality peddles, may be overall set up, light guitar with a pure clean sound & aggressive sound with gain, feels good in your hands...looks badass. My vote is the SG..even over the Les Paul (all factors incuded, only noticable reaall difference from the SG & LP is that on clean tone, the LP is a little deeper..but the extra weight, $, and minor difference on clean tone, no way im spending more on a guitar much heavier, harder to play frets down low, thicker...and personally i like the look of the SG more..a bad ass guitar! ..never liked the clean tone of fenders & that twangy/blues vibe it gives off vs Gibson/other axes.
