Gibson Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V - The Most important Heavy Metal Guitar of all time?

Ойын-сауық

The boys get their hands on a customers new GIbson Kirk Hammett V. It's swag heaven on this guitar, and Baxter demo's it standing up!
One of the Most Important Heavy Metal Guitars of All Time
Metallica fans worldwide are familiar with Kirk Hammett’s 1979 Flying V. It was Kirk’s first Gibson and established his passion for Gibson guitars. Its purchase was inspired by famous Flying V™ players Kirk admired and because he was looking for a fuller sound. And what a sound! Kirk still plays the original guitar to this day, and used it on all the early Metallica albums, including Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All, and The Black Album, making it one of the most important heavy metal guitars of all time. Only 200 were hand-made by the expert luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, artfully aged to match the original by the Murphy Lab. The included Certificate of Authenticity photo is signed by Kirk Hammett himself.

Kdh just did a rundown on the actual differences between the og body shape and the 70s or whatever... I knew they changed the 'shoulder' but didn't realize the older ones were also like... *Significantly* wider overall and sadly there's not a ton of reissues or releases of that particular body shape.... Oddly... I have been on a nostalgia kick lately and spotted that hammer v in the video for spiderwebs by No doubt and like... Idk what the market is like for those but that might be a good sleeper to get real friggin close cuz I haven't heard anyone mention them in a while but.... I remember there were adds in guitar world where those guys (no doubt) were reps for hammer and had a v and explorer made that were kind of perfect... Just saying. If ya read all this hope it helps. Cuz yeah I agree. And I haven't got the cash to pull the trigger if I did find anything so I haven't looked. So best of luck and cheers

@@allenmitchell09 I just looked and those hamers are around six grand it looks like... Which still way more than I could ever spend on a guitar but for a collector type that's nothing.... Seeing it next to the epis or even Gibson's though you really see how different that og body style is. I just made a short urging someone to scoop em up before they end up being the next big 'lets chase it' piece of gear. I've always kept em in the back of my mind cuz I remember they were aggressively trying to get artists and stuff... Like they went *after* Gibson... Even went to court I think cuz they pushed how Gibson hadn't used that specific V shape for years so it should be fair use... I gotta look into this and see how much I'm remembering and how much I'm filling in the gaps cuz their story would make for a good video tbh if I'm even close to remembering correctly.

Gibson is definitely hit or miss in this. The ‘61 SG Standard I bought (and since sold) had an almost bone dry rosewood fret. I was pretty bummed b/c I definitely prefer the darker fretboard. Agreed that for $15K it should have the best of the best, but maybe people want the lighter wood (???) 🤷‍♂️

Yep ... I'm not there, but just running some incredibly rough numbers. If it sells for 20K in 10 years ... good deal, maybe. In the mean time, I paid 8% sales tax on 15K (ain't getting that back). Plus maybe $300 to $500 each year for insurance that will actually cover it for theft, flood, fire, drunk friends, drunk me, etc. I wouldn't trust or rely on my generic homeowners insurance to cover what I paid or what it's worth. And if they did ... I would pay for it in the long run after they jacked my insurance rate up. Gotta' love it. Would be lucky to break even after 10 years. Not an investment for a little guy like me. Too expensive as a player for an amateur like me. As noted ... any "perks" not really perks for me. I do like it though. 💁‍♂️

I think it’s rich people parking cash into something that consistently holds value over the last 30 years. I’m not sure these limited custom runs are going to hold value like vintage instruments though. Vintage instruments might not maintain their value if people keep losing interest in general in music

I think that's priced correctly. You're paying for the exclusivity of it and to get that for 15k is a good deal when other stuff they're doing is going for 50k which does seem a little high... but 15k for an exclusive with extras is a very fair price.

Hell no, 15K. I heard this from Anderson. The difference between wearing a $30K watch and a $10 watch: can you tell the time "better" on the $30K watch? I get that rich people wash their dogs in $10,000 imported bottled water. Is the dog cleaner? Does money get better stuff? Sure. But at a certain point... how much better can a $10,000 bottle of water be compared to a bottle of clear, pure, filtered water? I like a cool story too... But for $15K Ill buy 6 awesome 2K guitars and with the 3K I have left over Ill spend a vacation weekend in Las Vegas. Hey Maybe Ill buy a poster of Metallica while Im in town. Or I could have one friggen V.. .Guys.. Your getting desensitized for sure. That's not normal person shit to spend a down payment on a house on a guitar.... Unless of course you ARE Kirk Hammett. I make guitars man... They don't cost 15K to make.. They just don't. Unless your using a 5,000 year old sacred tree.. The price doesn't even come close to 15K to make a guitar. So lets not be assholes?
