Not gonna lie, I think I've never seen any Indonesian documentation (on national television) of their own tribe this clear and transparent about the non-mainstream culture. Thank you and good job Sonny for taking over this documentation for the people of Indonesia and the world. I hope Indonesian tv is seeing your vid and spread it on news. Edit: so a lot of people misunderstanding something i said here. Firstly, the main point is not about the bugis tribe, but all the non-mainstream tribe on Indonesia. I once read about Bissu in the Bugis Tribe society. Sadly in recent years, Bissu is always get discrimination and because of that their existence is slowly disappear. I thought their tradition is extinct completely because my Bugis friends rarely talking about them, maybe because they live in the city and not exposed to the ancient tradition. This video proved me wrong, you meet a very special person Sonny. Very excited to see your next adventure

the exist nowadays, but their number is low. im from Bone there was one living in our traditional house as a keeper and practicing traditional bugis ceremonial. she passed away year a go and havent heard that her student has taken her role. they exist the 5 of them

The term "boogeyman" is actually from the word "Bugis man". They were pirates who would raid Dutch vessels at night during colonial times. They'd wear all black, smear coal all over their face, and raid Dutch vessels at night. Dutch parents started telling their misbehaving kids "you better behave or the bugi man will get you". Then when the Dutch settled in New Amsterdam (New York now) it became "boogeyman".

I’m recovering from surgery and I’ve been binging this show (both channels) for over a month now! I’m 5 days post-op and I only watched Sonny through the whole surgery experience. Pre-op, post-op and now home. I truly can’t explain how much of a part this show is to my daily life! It’s opened my eyes so much! I’ve wasted so much food but seeing what other cultures eat has made me be less picky if my greens aren’t perfect and I even ate some soft fat (not the hard part but I’ll get there) of a steak the other day! It was delicious! So THANK YOU BEFRS TEAM! You’re editors are superb and Sonny makes me laugh ALL THE TIME!!! Keep it up please don’t stop! As soon as we’re financially recovered from my surgery I’m going to become a patron!

Yes, it must be confusing for foreigners and fellow Muslims abroad. I am Indonesian, Sundanese, and Muslim. I am often confused about many things that are practiced even by my group. But I keep it to myself and vice versa. Instead of blowing up the differences, we emphasize what we have in common. Of course, I know about the Bugis people, but this is my first time hearing about the Bisu. Their food is mouth-watering for me. We have this dish with almost the same process as the eel soup, except we use catfish and slightly different spices. Yummy.

At around 10 minutes in, he's trying the fish surrounded by the local women. It's really great seeing their reactions. You can tell these are a lovely people full of humor and warmth.

Ok, so this episode was sooooooooooo weird and I'm all for it!!! Our ancestor's pure belief and tradition was supposed to be animism just like the people that live in pacific islands While the traditions and ideas in indonesia right now are already mixed and imported from india (especially hinduism).. This is still just sulawesi.. You will be more shocked to see the traditions that against islam in java, sumatera. Especially javanese and sundanese people.. There many many of them who still being strong believer for the traditional beliefs even though they are moslems or christians

@@strongperson359 The actual name (was) To Ugi referring to our first King who unified Bugis ethnic, his name was La Sattump(UGI) and as a Bugis myself I'm not quite sure who gave us the name Bugis LoL, one of the source it's the British in Singapore/Malay peninsula at the time call us Boogie man because lot of our ancestors was pirates in Malay peninsula

One of the main reasons I like this channel is they cover a lot of info in a relatively short video. I’m not overly fond of 1 hour videos or even 30 minute ones. Just give me enough entertainment so that I can stay focused for 20 mins max and I’m happy

Thank you for sharing the culture of the Bugis tribe, as additional information, bissu in several other Bugis areas have disappeared, so it's quite difficult to find or find them now, and all the food you eat from breakfast to the goat's head cooked in curry is the food I ate since I was little, it makes me miss my hometown. @@PokeTwilight The point is that transgender people have always exist and exist in every culture...Native Americans called them Two Spirit. The difference is only how much or how little each culture represses them and forces them to adhere to gender binaries. The west traditionally would literally kill people for being transgender. Now it's becoming more accepting and certain people have a huge problem with that (like you, probably). This tribe is a good example of what happens when you let people just be who are they. Nobody is forcing someone in this tribe to be a man who dresses like a woman if they don't want to, and vice versa.

Of course it didnt cure. This type of "magical healers" are common in south asia/south east asia. They " treat " all sorts of Diseases and but what cures is time, endurance, clean and careful living+eating for few days.

The word Boogeyman already invented before the west meet us, but yes the British once called Bugis tribe as a Boogeyman because of our notorious reputation as a pirates in Malay peninsula's water
