* GIANT RC BIPLANE * Pitts Python (85%) * HD *

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Monster Pitts Python (85%) flown at Wings & Wheels 2013. Engine loses power and ends the routine early but brought down safely with limited power. This model is the largest radio controlled aircraft in the UK, maybe in Europe, weighing in at 138 Kg, just under the maximum limit as defined by the CAA of 150Kg. The Pitts is scratch built, that means plans, design, construction and materials are all created by the builder to emulate the full size aircraft and it took Greg 5 years to complete this 7/8th scale biplane. The engine is manufactured by Hirth and is usually mounted in man carrying micro light aircraft. 650 cc flat twin with a 63 inch 3 blade propellor.

    The guy has a passion for building and RC, that's why he did it. Building a large RC model is a lot less complex than building something that carries a pilot. As for cost, buying a full size Pitts would probably 20+ times more than the cost of this RC model.

    There are smaller _real_ planes than this... like the SD1 Minisport, or the CriCri. There are even some smaller _real_ jets, like the Bede BD2. This thing is just overkill. If I were to spend this much money building a plane of this size, I'd expect it to be literally pilotable. Some people have too much money.

    except that in a real aircraft, you often need a pilot's license (the US is unique with it's ultraight category, most other ultralight categories around the world still need licenses), which makes this still more affordable. Also, if it DOES crash, you don't go down with it.

    Beautiful!! Common beginner mistakes - make it small, so it's cheap, and make a simple design, so it's easy to build. You've just built something almost impossible to fly. The right way, start with a design that works, either another model or a real aircraft. Don't make it ultra simple and shoddy, build it like you were going to ride in it. And build it big enough that you nearly could ride in it. Which is easier to balance on you hand, a broomstick, or a walking stick, or 30cm ruler? How about a toothpick or a match? This is not a beginner project, it's an expert toy, but I'll bet you, it'd be easy to fly and heaps of fun.

    Basically the same size as the Baby Great Lakes (NON-R/C 13' length, 16' wingspan) my ol' man and I built in the garage in the early '70s, in barely over a year, when my father was head of U.S. Army helicopter gunnery instruction... definitely a full-time job (the gunnery instruction AND the aircraft construction; in fact my father ended up in the hospital for an overnight(?) stay due to exhaustion). Built from prints only, no kit... just raw materials. 4130 tubing, Sitka spruce, Dacron... it seemed like each wing rib was made of 50 pieces of wood, counting the gussets : ) I still have a pic of us running a wingless engine test in the front yard (neighbors thought we were CRAZY!), and it looks EXACTLY the same scale as this R/C. Yep, when you build an R/C this big, I have to ask: "Whatsamatta you? Skeered of heights?" : ) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pamu0tWqnJPYdbw.html

    Man that's just an airplane that's radio controlled. You could fly in that thing no problem. I would have used a motorcycle engine.

    ***** I did recently see a full scale biplane converted to RC. Will try and find the details but...you can't go bigger than that I guess.

    Essential RC maybe not technically RC since it was autonomous but there was this...www.hiller.org/condor.shtml which is an amazing thing especially considering when it flew. No sure if it's the biggest but with a wingspan greater than a 747 it is certainly on the large side. Less fun than this Pitts which is also amazing. Thanks for sharing the video.
