People pick and choose when they want to use box office number. Case point, before captain marvel came out all the reactionaries talked about how it would bomb at the box office and show how bad the movie is, when that didn’t happen they flipped it into “well box office doesn’t mean everything”. It’s a dumb argument.

Yeah, the humour wasn’t for me either. But, to be honest, I recently rewatched the original, and the humour there isn’t for adult me either. I also didn’t like the style of the jokes in the new one, but again, it’s just not for me. I also greatly dislike Billy Madison, and Wedding Crashers. I just have a different sense of humour to what is currently popular in American movies. Which is not terribly surprising- I don’t tend to like American comedians either. I prefer things more dry and sarcastic. Which is fine. My daughter likes both movies.

I just find the humor rather dull. Most of the jokes run for too long, are either comprised of pop-culture references (some more blatant than others), damn near every character is incompetent or annoying. I get it, comedy is subjective, but I just don't find it very funny, imho.

@@katherinemorelle7115 The Wedding Crashers is not a good movie but I really hate how the comedy turned out to be mean-spirited and awkwardly unfunny. Who would've thought that punching someone in a gut, or having a woman sexually harrased a man in the bed at night makes you giggle? I can't believe that movie even became the highest grossing comedy of all time, and it doesn't aged very well. That being said, I stick to good comedies because I have different tastes to. Like Monty Python and the Flying Circus, or maybe a bits of Internet memes. Even black comedy is a-okay for me at least.

I didn't think Ghostbusters 2016 was "good", but it is "fine". I didn't think it ruined my childhood (Ghostbusters 1984 and The Real Ghostbusters Cartoon were "my Ghostbusters), but it wasn't that great. I gave it a big ol' "meh". However, we went and saw "my" Ghostbusters 1984 in the theater when it was re-released a few years ago and today, as an adult, I found it just be "fine" and not "good" for other reasons. In short, I agree with you, I am no longer the target audience because I am no longer a child.

@@Hirnlego999 I love how people get mad at Indy 4 when it works off the same tropes as the old ones. They all have classic scenes like the "gross out" scene, the "big burly guy that Indy can't just punch but kills with a prop" scene, the "the artifact destroys the bad guy" scene, the "Indy makes an impossible escape" scene (you know that one in the 4th one), etc. The clues were always dumb, the characters were always over the top, the fourth one didn't screw that up. I personally find it the worst of the bunch (things like stereotypical russians and natives in the 2000's hit different, you know?) but it fits the style and tone of the others. It belongs.

The biggest criticism I have about this film was the way everyone’s acting made it feel like a sketch. The world never felt as believable when it was trying to be mundane as the original film. It felt like an extended SNL skit about ghostbusters, not an attempt at a reboot.

I liked the characters, the part where I really felt it down to earth was where Dr. Erin was talking about how her friendship with Aby started, and that little toast from Holtzman at the end. Maybe that's what the movie lacked in that regard, some introspective moments to connect a little more with the characters because they were fine but they tried to put too much comedy. The script was the problem.

I felt Leslie (i think thats her name) and Megan were the two really bringing in the laughs for me. Had Chris Hemsworth been a less attractive performer, I would have not been as impressed. Though I never saw the extended cut, strangely enough, I thought the weakest parts of the movie were when it was trying to pander to the older fans. The cameos felt out of place. The use of Slimer was not the best. And basically re-creating the marshmallow man scene with the Ghostbusters logo felt a bit stale to me. Storyograph Paul Feig originally didn't want that many GB references. The movie was also supposed to be scarier. Sony told him to add more GB references after the complaints, and to make it more suitable for kids. Basically Sony shouldn't have meddled and should have ignored the complaints. I liked the film enough but a darker, scarier film might have appealed more.

@@entrydenied That's why "executive meddling" is the biggest problem to every industry out there. Paul Feig could've succeeded as a decent reboot if it wasn't for the executives who seemed to get away with the karma. That happened with Spider-Man 3 when Venom wasn't supposed to be there, and that's when Sam Raimi's trilogy ended on a tragic note. It looks like Sony (and other studios as well) haven't learned anything about meddling the creative minds. These executives should be fired for sabotaging someone's work just for the sake of dollar signs. I would like a scarier version of Ghostbusters reboot that is closest to the _Real Ghostbusters_ animated series. But it looks like it's too late because of said controversies and blaming on Trump, even when he didn't knew the 2016 movie existed. The third sequel of the original Ghostbusters looks a lot more chilling with a Stranger Things atmosphere.

This is an argument I've had for a long time, and not just with Ghostbusters but with several childhood franchises that have opted to alter their image in order to reach a newer generation of children. The accounts already in the comment section here are littered with imo accurate "it was fine/okay/alright/not awful as others make out" ring true for the very reason you spelt out; it's not for them - or, to be more precise, that adult sensibility or nostalgia was only a side of this production, not the core of it.

The scripts just lack so much care even if it’s aimed at kids, we’re robbing them of a better story.

I felt like the weakest parts were the most old-fan service. Slimer and the cameos by Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd in particular. I adore all four of the lead actor/comedians but I still wish Erin had been cast as non-white. I think it would have been more resonant with the whole “struggling to be taken seriously in ways white associates are happy to thumb their noses at” and softened some of the issues with Patty being the only non-institutional-academic. But yeah, I absolutely agree with all your points, too, and am glad this movie exists and is good.

Likely the only reason an executive green-lit it. I mean. The pitch for both those movies would be likely very similar. OG Ghost Busters pitch: "So... it is a movie about these people who hunt ghosts." "This seems childish." "One of the ghost hunters is Bill Murray." "Sold" 2016 Ghost Busters pitch: "So... it is a movie about these people who hunt ghosts." "This seems childish." "It will be a remake of Ghost Busters and the cast is all female." "Sold"

honestly the way you brought up how the ghostbusters throughout time is for different people is interesting. the passing down the torch to kids makes me think a bit though, because it does show different people for the old fanbase. because people are still attached to franchises and it is hard to disconnect personal experiences from nostalgia or the past direction of things to pass down to newer markets. while there are other fans that consume anything related as long as there is a vague sense of continuity (in concepts, like a formula) to introduce newer fans or even their kids to. It’s just interesting how hollywood tries to revive certain franchises, and makes me realize that there is an art to that, the art of balancing a film into something new audiences can consume easily (and not just feeling vintage for the sake of it) and gathering elements to satisfy older fans to continue supporting the franchise. The next film I see is getting more hype because of a switch of direction that can please older fans but I wonder about the new elements that will convince families with kids to get interested also. (the name of course, but I wonder about teh merch lol)

I wasn't blown away by it or anything, but I laughed, I enjoyed the action scenes, thought the ghosts and the CG effects and such looked really good...it was fine! Really! I had totally forgotten, but now appreciate movies like Dreamworks and them making funny openers again, they help me see & enjoy the simple things.

People always want me to hate it, but, it was pretty good! I liked most of the jokes, and the visuals are nice too. I did dislike that Sony seemed to make it all about how it was a female movie. I just wanted them to advertise it like a movie, not to make it all about the women, even though I do like all of the ladies in this film!

I haven't seen the movie yet so I'll limit myself to the points you made in the beginning. I agree whole heartedly that full/extended/directors cuts should be the default cut. The only reason I can see for not doing so ( besides ticket sales) is DVD sales. However it doesn't makes sense in that regard either. The doubt the average viewer will give a movie a second chance in blue ray if any good faith was lost in the theatrical cut. Perhaps the studio is banking on the fanbases but even if all the fans did buy the new cut that's not a lot in the grand scheme of things. The only other reason I could see for a shorter cut is that people might not actually want to sit in a theater for 2 and a half hours. However unless you have medical issues of are on a tight schedule an engaging movie will make it so that you are never looking at your phone for the time. The more you look at it the less it makes sense to provide a worse product especially if you want to maximize longevity and profits

The thing about full/extended/director's cuts should be the default cut isn't ALWAYS true. Directors aren't the same as editors, and sometimes (not always, maybe not even most of the time, but often enough) movies are edited down for good reason. If you haven't seen it, "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" is an excellent video detailing the difference between George Lucas' original cut of the film and the edit that eventually saw theatrical release (and that fans have been trying to reclaim for years due to Lucas' re-re-editing). Auteur theory is mostly bunk, movies are collaborative art and the idea of a "single pure vision" is essentially never realized (usually for the best). For an even more direct example of this, look at literature. "Author's Original Unedited" or "Author's Preferred Text" versions of novels are about as auteur as it's possible to be and (when they aren't simply rewrites/expansions by a now-more-experienced-author) ...are typically ambling and dry without actually adding all that much to the story or characters.

Tyler Fraser for a comedy it generally is. Most comedies these days clock in at about 90 minutes. Action/adventure movies about 2 hours, and serious dramas can go 2 1/2 to 3. There are of course exceptions, but that seems to be the general guidelines.

I also loved that Feig played with the aspect ratio. While most of the movie had the standard 21:9 letterbox format, ghost and proton pack effects broke the black bars at the top and bottom, filling out a 16:9 screen. The effect adds an incredible amount of depth to the picture.

At the time I was actually a little surprised because I didn't really like the original. I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't my thing. What was my thing was Holzman licking her gun, and Kevin being possessed and dancing. It made me happy. It was sheer fun. And I don't think I've even seen the full cut. I haven't watched it since then either, but I was disappointed at the time when I found out some people hated it with a passion. It's nice to see videos about it on the other side of the fence.

I forgot Rowan was even a part of the film until you brought him up. That's probably my only main gripe with it. He's very forgettable until he steps into Chris Hemsworth's body. The other is the Fall Out Boy rendition of the theme song. Not that good. That said, the main cast naturally had a lot of good chemistry & I think it needs a sequel rather than the upcoming one we're promised. If the girls were characters from later entries in the franchise like the cartoon or comics I'm sure fans would have had no problem with it. They seemed accepting of girl Ghostbusters then, so why not now?

  • @lordlapizul

What's funny about this is that I saw the theatrical cut and I found Rowan to be boring. But the way you explained his inverted understanding of why he thinks he's marginalized was really interesting. This reminded me of Hal Stewart from Megamind, a shlubby cameraman who has an unreciprocated attraction to his coworker that reaches uncomfortable levels and gets worse when he gets superpowers and becomes increasingly unstable after being rejected, previously under the impression that being a superhero with powers entitles him to a woman he saved from danger--danger which he caused to this end. He's a good foil to Megamind, who, suffering from bad faith perspectives of his own, made Hal a superhero so he could have a nemesis to fight and maintain a status quo he thinks he needs, because he doesn't know what else to do with his life. Megamind was marginalized and Hal truly wasn't. If you wanna talk about a perfect modern world villain, Hal is definitely one, in my opinion.

I agree with your point about the humor. It's the reason I didn't like the movie. I loved all the actresses in other movies. It's not that I don't like rapid fire comedy either. I think one of the funniest shows on TV in the recent past was Archer; a show which is very fast paced and takes several re-watches to get everything. The comedy in Ghostbusters just fell flat for me. The jokes weren't particularly witty, and weren't structured well imo. By far my favorite was Leslie Jones. Chris Hemsworth is hot, and I think he did the best he could with the material he was given, but the best I got out of him was a few cheap chuckles.

Great video, but i'd like to make a point. While i think it's condescending to assume that general audiences ad adverse to long 2+ hour movies (see: Titanic, Avatar, Avengers Endgame, LOTR etc) when it comes to comedies brevity is important. Before the Judd Apatow boom in the 2000s most comedy movies were a neat 90-100mins, thats how the genre works best. If Feig couldn't make Ghostbusters (2015) work in the 116mins the studio allotted him (thats 9mins more than the original Ghostbusters) then he isn't capable of making a good Ghostbusters movie.

The worst argument you brought up is probably the "It's not my anymore". You're absolutely right: Of course it isn't, for it never went away. Rewatch/replay that if you feel nostalgic. Show it to your kids if you have to. But don't throw a tamper tantrum when a new iteration of your favourite childhood property doesn't appeal to your adult sensibilities.

A good video - I was bummed when all the backlash happened against the movie before it even came out, it felt like it made the stakes for the movie to be perfect 'or else'. Then when it came out and it was like, a solid B+ movie (fun but nothing like, amazeballs awesome) everyone who said women couldn't be the Ghostbusters used that as justification to claim it was just bad instead of realizing it for what it was; a solid family friendly B+ movie that was clearly aimed at kids in ways the originals weren't but had become over time. They were actualizing the Ghostbusters franchise for what it was meant to be.

The problem was the way the movie was marketed. Every reboot faces criticism towards changes, what matters is how it responds. In Gb case, the new all women team was the glaring difference. Of course the fans started to point it out. Now then, one way they could have responded was to calm people down with a promise to stay faithful to the original despite the changes. Thats not what happened. Instead they chose to call out the trolls and indulge in a controversy. Hence if you google Ghostbusters now you will see courtless articles featuring words like ”misogyny” and ”sexist men”. Doesnt really feel like a nice family friendly comedy movie, eh? A better marketing strategy would have stayed away from these associations at all costs.

I actually enjoyed the 2016 version a lot. I felt it was a solid remake. I ddn't even know there was a longer version until your video. My only reget about the new version was the choice of not basing the film in the same universe as the original films. The 2016 version wasn't a reboot is was a remake. It had many elements from the original film that were retooled for this film. The 2020 Ghostbusters film brings back the 1980s cast members and it would have been fun to see them incorporate parts of the 2016 film, but the choice to not have the two films connected, gives no ability for a cross over. I am excited now to watch the original cut of the 2016 film now I know it exists. :-) love your content

Technically I'm someone who was born in the 80's but the later 80's so I idenitfy myself more as a "90's fan" and someone who really only knew about stuff like Ghostbusters through appearances on say Muppet Babies and general pop culture osmosis then in terms of watching the original two movies which I never really did. I know they have their fans and they seem enjoyable but yeah I never saw them. And I'm still someone who even as an adult liked Ghostbusters. And yeah I do believe you can judge children's movies and point out if they're crap whether or not they are movies that are made for you despite being fans of the oirginal source material (for example The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution SUCK. And though I am an older Dragon Ball and Avatar the Last Airbender fan I don't need to be to know why they fail and are so terrible) but some properties got a special amount of vitriol that yeah did not seem warranted upon a remake and Ghostbusters 2016 was one of them. Granted I am curious what they are going to do with Afterlive but even that will still be made a lot for the kids (thus why it STARS kids) and yeah that will probably pass the baton of Ghostbusters better then just rebooting it but it's not like they just copy pasted the original just with women and worse jokes or something. Even as someone who only heard of the original I know the 2016 has a different tone and feel and it works for what it is and yeah it's still something getting totally dumped on where it really shouldn't be so props to Leon for actually putting up a defense of it. The movie would've been good if I'd never seen the originals or if it attempted to have a real storyline to tie in with the originals. That's why Afterlife works and completes the trilogy. To me 2016 Ghostbusters is just a long bonus feature
