    When you dismiss legitimate gripes about a movie and call it misogyny, you will never improve. They always seem to use this excuse to justify a bad movie or show. "Oh it was actually good but all the trolls!" Why didn't anyone go to watch it then? There has been a disconnect between 'actual' critics and fans for a long time. Critics have an agenda to push. There have been countless movies with a Grand Canyon size disparity between the fan score and the critic's score. Always trust the fan's score here.

    yeah they got defensive way too early and way too passionately, it only hurt them. All the big film makers learned a long time ago its best to ignore the haters and just make the movie you wanna make. Thats the main reason Quentin Tarantino is so successful. He's not making films for the general public. He's telling the kind of stories he wants to hear and if some people happen to also like them, so be it.

    I wouldn’t say always trust the fan score. There have been a lot of good horror films in the last ten years that got a shit ton of bad audience reviews that seem to be written by dummies. I would say I agree with the Suicide Squad, BvS, and Rise of Skywalker critic reviews, but there have also been plenty of mainstream films that I though were bad that got mainly positive reviews with critics. It’s always a back and forth with film criticism. Sometimes you’ll agree with the consensus sometimes you won’t. Sometimes the critics get it wrong, and sometimes the audience will end up championing bad movies. There is not a clear answer as to who is wrong or right all of the time. Either you like a movie or you don’t, and the. You move on with your life. Why bother getting angry over what the mainstream audience consensus is or what film critics are saying about a particular movie.

    It had nothing to do with having females cast. These same internet "trolls" and " nerds" idolize ripley from aliens it has to do with pandering and virtue signaling. As for the casting you avoided the fact these females maybe funny occasionally they always play the exact same character in every movie and it didnt match well. The humor fell flat. The " dumb" blonde male being ogled by the females pretty much ruins the argument that the females always make about males doing the same to them. They outright stole not " called back" but stole scenes from the original yet put a " spin" on them which means took all of what made those scenes good and screwed it up. I really wanted this to be a good movie but it was just plain terrible.. i actually had to see if my nostalgia goggles were causing this and watched the first 2 movies all over again and... nope nostalgia goggles were not the problem... paul f was.. oh and Leslie jones.. she just sucked.

  • @jvenom174

    @jvenom174

    2 жыл бұрын

    Exactly. You can’t have every fucking actor in your movie doing improv in every CC single scene. Bill Murray was pretty much the only actor in the original to adlib most of his scenes, and it worked well because there was still a fully written script that the director was following while making the movie. Paul Feig has admitted that he basically let the actors take over the film, which you should almost never do. A Ghostbusters film needs structure, witty dialogue, jokes that are allowed to breathe, horror elements that are played straight, actual stakes, and overall it should just be a fun ride of a movie that moves along at a pace that’s constantly building upon itself till it reaches it’s climax. The biggest challenge of a ghostbusters remake should just be finding a good cast that can play well off of each other. The cast of the 2016 is good, but they don’t play well off each other. Every actor is fighting for the spotlight in every single scene rather than being generous performers who know when to let a fellow actor have their moment. The movie needed a strong director to rein the actors in and Paul Feig did a terrible job in that regard.

Agreed there was a huge amount of toxic misogyny etc around before the movie; but that slapping scene and the incredibly poor cgi ghosts contributed heavily to the dislikes. Most people thought it was going to terrible, not because of wimmin, but a director who clearly didn't care about the original was cobbling together a poor derivative of a modern classic. Then the movie is released and confirms our worst fears. There was no characterisation no jokes and no fun. The critics blatantly just gave out positive reviews to counter all the harassment, if there was no controversy, this would be luck to be over 0% on RT

    Because they have no real faith in the success of an original female character in an original film. Dr. Who is another example, along with countless other attempts and failures. A woman, according to THEM, is not actually able to stand on her own two feet. She must replace an already successful male lead in an already successful franchise. Her defining characteristic is strength, while her male counterparts are written as weaker and stupider to prop her up even higher. The hypocrisy of third wave feminism is laughably transparent.

Isn't it strange how the only black lady on the team has to beg and plead for the white girls to let her join the team, and even then they only let her join after she tells them she can get a car and be their personal chauffeur? And how about the shiny new weapons they get at the end of the movie? While the white women get laser blasters, proton bazookas, and a boxing glove that can liquidate ghosts (what the hell Feig?), what does the black gal get? A wood chipper. I guess Feig thought that a laser mini gun would be too good for a black woman, so instead he just gave her a piece of farming equipment. The shows creator got so pissed off by that noting the unfortunate implications doing that with the only black character n the show, among other forced unnecessary changes he left the shows production.

    I have to disagree with you on one thing. Considering that "Afterlife" features a thirteen year old girl as the main character, and the internet hasn't exploded into a raging storm of sexism, I'd say that the gender of the reboots' cast wasn't the reason for the hate it received at all. In my personal experience throughout the whole reboot fiasco, most people just didn't think that Paul Feig's writing, directing, and comedic style would work for a Ghostbusters movie. Heck, Feig himself described his vision for the reboot as, "Bridesmaids with ghosts", and well, that's just not what long time fans wanted from a movie they'd been waiting nearly three decades for. Adding even more fuel on the fire were Feig and his actresses pointing and shouting "sexist" at anyone who didn't get down on their knees and worship this film as though it was the second coming of Christ. That's not to say that there weren't any racist or sexist remarks, there definitely were, but it was no where near the extent that many believe. I do agree with you about the expensive cost of making this film. That was definitely a contributing factor for the failure to launch a sequel, but it goes a bit further than what you mentioned. Sony gave Feig $140 million to film, and then invested an additional $140 million to advertise. This means that Answer the Call would have needed to make about $280 million just to break even, and that's not even including the additional money needed for the re-shoots. Even then, Feig also stated that in order for the studio to consider it a success, it would need to make something like $500 million. In the end though, it only managed to earn $229 million world-wide, not nearly enough to break even. The film was considered a financial failure by Sony and all plans for sequels and spin offs were canceled. It just failed to find an audience, that's all.

    Most of the blame for this movie goes to Paul Feig. When you have a cast made up of improv actors you need a director who's strong enough and confident enough to let them play, but then reign them back in. Ghostbusters 2016 has the feel of a movie where they were told "do whatever you want, we'll film it all and figure out how to piece it together later." So you have four actors constantly talking over each other, each trying to be the wacky one and get in the best jokes. The script may have sucked too, I don't know. I'm honestly not sure how much of the actual script made it to the finished movie.

The reboot was all jokers and kinda head and kinda heart..but it was not specific enough and was confusing as a GB movie. I saw it and thought it was a funny movie that wasn't specific. This movie definitely captured the spirit of the OG film, it just wasn't as funny as it should have been. The jokes and performances were just weak and unforgettable and like you said every character was a joker to an extent which made it hard to relate. Unlike in the original were there is Zeddemore who plays that audience character and Venkman who plays the skeptic/nihilist. This movie IMHO was better than Afterlife. Afterlife was cringe and really wanted to change Ghostbusters into something it never was and not really in a good way. They only ever succeeded massively changing GB in the Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.

    "Don't be like the mayor from JAWS." "Never compare me to the JAWS mayor! NEVER!" My favorite moment in the movie.

    Mmm, seems you spent a lot of time building up to the movie rather then living up to your title.

    For me the genderswapping wasn't the issue, it was how unfunny I thought it was. Just didn't get a laugh out of me.

    Same here. I was very surprised how irritating it was, in fact. With the exception of Leslie Jones, who I think is the least funny person on the planet, the main cast was made up of people who have otherwise always made me laugh. But this film is just...humming with mediocrity.

    Wow. This analysis was bias and wrongheaded. The casting was recieved poorly because it was a cynical, they were not casting women for creative reasons they were casting women for marketing. The trailer was poorly recieved because it was all Farrelly brothes type gross out comedy, not the dark and sarcastic humour of Ghostbusters. And the movie lost money because it was a bad movie. It's that simple.

    The biggest problem with this movie was every time it got going...you were taken right out of it by a cameo or another nod hitting you over the head.
