Honestly, I reccommend looking at the lyrics to all of Ghost's songs on Genius, cause there are a lot of annotations that go in depth into the meaning of the songs and it's really interesting. There are some things I never would have caught myself, but then reading the explanations I'm like "wow, that's cool!". @@lawrencedye6514 the song is about modern times and the current era of evangelical furor. The ‘grabbing them all by the hoo has’ is clearly a direct reference to Donald Trump and how he attracts so many religious people. Lyrically, "Twenties" appears to be a cheeky foreshadowing of what people thought the 1920s would be like (prosperous for all) without knowing all the horrors that were coming right around the corner (the Great Depression, World War II, etc.). Here, it seems like Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge is using that historical context as an analog for the present day, as we're entering the 2020's with a whole new stack of uncertainties.

What? People entered the 1920s with optimism and, over all, it was an incredibly prosperous time period. The Great Depression wasn’t until 1929 and World War 2 didn’t begin until 1939. There’s a reason why it’s called The Roaring Twenties. We entered the 2020s with a completely different mindset than humans did a century ago. TL;DR The 1920s were awesome.

Tobias promised the new album to be around as heavy as Meliora but differently, he said it will be dark, riff oriented and will have no ballads. All have been true so far. Also I've noticed hes moved from the very compact hook ridden songs and started writing more proggy multi-layered songs. I think this can be explained by the fact hes had so much time to write this album. The previous ones have been written, recorded and released between tours, now hes had nearly 2 years to make this album.

Good to see more people seem to be 'comin around to this song after the spectacular live movie version! I always loved this track. Very Rock Opera in the vein of Jim Steinman or Andrew Lloyd Webber. But absolutely doing it's own thing entirely too, which is so very Ghost... It feels pulled from the same universe as "In The Land Of The Pig The Butcher Is King", specifically the original version that was written by Steinman for the shelved Batman musical. That's another song about corrupt people in control of society. Now excuse me whilst I go listen to Carpe Noctem from Steinman's Tanz Der Vampire and the London and Australian version of The Beauty Underneath from Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies 'cause this has got me in the mood.

When I first listened to IMPERA I was a bit iffy on it, but Ghost has this weird thing with me where when I first listen to their music, I don't really care for it that much but on subsequent listens I fucking love. I don't know what it is that causes this. I feel like they have the catchiness of good pop but also have that substance and variety that good metal has. Their sound is familiar with the cult rock vibes of Blue Oyster Cult, a bit of Black Sabbath, and some of the Deep Purple bluesyness. The whole rip on the Catholic church asthetic is great (and I say this as a Christian) for the band because it gives them the controversy, which a lot of metal fan like because it is outsider music. It gives them a more intriguing angle I guess. It feels almost like you want to know the "lore" of what Papa Emeritus is supposed to represent and that was a lot of the draw to the band. As someone who grew up in church, the use of organs and an almost insider knowledge depth of church rituals, terms, and dogma, the lyrics actually made me read them because they often related to religious practices. They're just a really cool band who makes music that is substantiative while retaining catchiness and has an interesting asthetic that makes we want to look into the people more.

Same. This song in particular really turned me off at first. But here I am, kinda digging it. The album in general is freaking fantastic. Definitely grows on you as you listen to it more. Ghost has been that way, to one degree or another, ever since I heard Cirice on the radio every day at work and got kind of fed up. Now they're one of my favorite bands. Funny how that works huh?

Dimmu Borgir might have tried something similar a decade ago. The context isn't the same but there's a similarity. The overall difference is that they play in a niche genre, I guess, and this is pop. I'm speaking of course about their album 'Abrahadabra'. Nothing new under our shared sun.

"It's like trying on a new pair of underwear; at first it's constricting, but soon it becomes a part of you" I had moments like these in every album/release prior to this song, at least as far back as when Meliora came out I'm rather digging the sonic direction of this; the arrangement is tight as fuck and a perfect pacebreaker for what I've heard from the album so far. The lyrics are so over-the-top and hand-over-fist that I can't help but dig the cheesiness of it. It'll take some more time to digest but I do simply enjoy it. I'm interested in seeing how it fits in the context of the rest of the album when it drops.

Perfectly stated. I keep having that "I'm not sure I like this one as much as the last album" but with an open mind by the end of the song I find myself wanting more. Tobias and his crew have a creativity that has been missing from metal for a while.

I'm loving the blatant parody of current authoritarian trends in politics (and the sorts of people who support them...) in the lyrics a whole lot! And the music has the energy of some sort of deranged cabaret show, which probably isn't surprising, since Tobias has always pulled influence from musical theatre, and Cabaret is one of the best musicals with a warning about decadent lives being steamrolled by an authoritarian regime out there. He's hitting hard with this one, and keeping it fun at the same time. I cannot wait for this full album!
