    For the record, the mainland Japanese are more accepting of Scarlett's casting as the Major than most Japanese-Americans.

    Zedfinite whining about the race of an ANDROID (minus the brain thingy) is preeeetty dumb. This is an American adaptation so it is totally understandable that there are mainly non Japanese actors. The fact that the mainland Japanese like the cast is a bonus.

    Lol they have copied scenes direct from the anime how much closer to the source material do they need to be? The tone of the trailer feels very GitS, the Major is somebody always searching for answers knowing she doesn't quite fit in this world she lives in but can't understand why she feels this way, she's somebody with the power to fight corruption where politicians can't so while searching for answers she's changing things from the shadows. Or do you mean "Derp dey used da Amerikan actress an da major is clearly Japan desu ne kawaii kyun!"?

    It isn't that the American White audience wouldn't like it, it's about gathering attention towards the movie. With a big name like Scarlett Johannsson on the movie it will instantly bring way more attention and viewers than it would if it had any Japanese actress. Honestly name one Japanese actress that is even remotely as recognizable or popular as Scarlett Johannsson. Movies are a business and take massive risks, having a recognizable cast of actors and actresses immediately lowers that risk.

    The original story is mostly cultural about walking in your own shoes. Which she doesn't in this movie since it's sort of an adaptation on every single movie ever made. The villain was a victim and she stole his freedom by hunting him down for making an expression on freedom of speech. In this movie they make him kill people but this was only because we see it through her eyes and she uses him as scapegoat for the lives she taken.

    Just because they got the "look" right doesnt mean they have done it justice. The Stallone Judge Dredd had "the look" right, it was still a garbage movie that ignored its source material. Your argument is literally for style over substance. I agree, they seem to have done a great job with the aesthetics, but this trailer makes it clear that they have fucked the story and the characters beyond recognition.

  • @Tonku12

    @Tonku12

    georgedisorder Trailers are HARDLY representative of the final product. Typically trailers are made by a 3rd party who only have certain finished clips to work with, and even then the trailer designer take liberties with music, editing, and sound effects. Very little of trailers are actually accurate to the final product. Why not watch the entire movie before condemming it? You cite a single, old movie as your prime example, but think about how many adaptations got it right.

(I don't know what comes after the prefix "xona," but xona is 10 to the 75th power. I read an article years ago that it would take 5 xonabytes of data storage to digitize a human being at the atomic level.)

    @tomhedlund4524

    I had never heard the prefix xona before that article, and I cannot find a list of all prefixes up to xona. One thing you may find interesting is that words that begin with an X, like xylophone or xenon, should be pronounced with a short, soft K sound followed by an S sound. So xona would not be pronounced "ZO-na," it would be pronounced "k-SO-na." I learned that in the eight grade about 34 years ago.

    I have literally watched hundreds of hours of anime, including GITS. For those of you otaku complaining that this movie is not suited for anime fans, it's not supposed to be. The purpose of a big-budget movie is to make money, and that means getting the biggest audience possible. It's not selling out. To make something just for anime fans is just plain stupid in a business sense.

    movies are art, so when you sell your artistic vision or someone else's artistic vision all in order to make big bucks then yes you are a sell out. You can have artistic vision and not be a sell out but when you leave your band members, the ones that helped create the artistic style, in order to make more money then you are a sell out. If you take a series that is considered one of the best pieces of art from a genre and remake poorly in order to make money then you are a sell out. That kind of bullshit mentality is why sweatshops are as big as they are. Everything is governed by making money in your eyes isnt it. According to you making movies for people who want to see the movies is stupid business sense even though they have been making things soley for anime fans since anime was created. I guess in your eyes all those One piece, Pokemon and Naruto movies released in theaters were meant for General audiences right? If you know people have supported to you to get to success (built a brand) then if you betray your supporter's trust for money then you are a sell out. If they decide to call this movie ghost in a shell then they made it hoping anime fans would come see it, otherwise they would have made an original movie. They hope anime fans will bring people to see the movie and spread the word. They are DEPENDING on anime fans to do this.

    Exactly Geddo, it's money vs. doing the anime justice. Of course Hollywood is going to go with money. If they put an asian actress in it, it probably wouldn't do as well unfortunately. It's sad but true. People only really respond to big name actors/actresses. I personally would've liked it if they stuck to the anime and did the right thing, but it wasn't going to happen.

  • @gedias1

    reasly dutchmans If you want art that doesn't sell out in your definition, you're going to get something cheaply made. Even the anime studios are in it for the business. If they don't bring in the revenue, the series is cancelled. The Pokemon movie as an example was an opportunity to get even more out of the fans, and still making a profit on the production. If the diehards see this as a betrayal, that's fine. They can still live with the works of the past and pretend the movie didn't exist.

    Nope, I'm so excited about the entire movie, casting included. And yeah, there's some creepy elements in GitS. Honestly, every time someone complains that the Major isn't Asian, I wonder why no one has ever complained that the voice actress for the dubbed anime was also American. I mean, maybe it's because the voice actress did a good job, earning an award even. Or maybe it's because no one really cares that dubs don't really use ethnically correct voice actors/actresses? Because the pay isn't as good? Anyway, after hearing the dubbed anime as a child, the Major doesn't really sound Asian to me, so maybe that's exactly the point where people should complain if they want live action adaptations to follow suit. Honestly, getting an Asian actress would make it feel less like GitS to me. Long story short, this looks like, feels like, and sounds like GitS to me and with the production value as high as it seems, I think this is going to really impress a lot of people. I think the major complaint after it's shown will not be the casting, but the amount of clothes (or lack thereof).

    Well the American adaptation will be more emotional and straightforward, that's what I expect, and to me it's not necessarily a bad thing. As much of a fan of the franchise as I am, I can recognize it can be pretty daunting and obscure to many people. It's not "Star Wars sci-fi", but rather Hard-Science. If it's done alright, this movie would be an entry point and promotion of the franchise. It's not meant to replace the rest that would still be there if people want to delve deeper into this universe. Plus it would be a proof of concept for proper Anime adaptations into American Live Action. As an Anime fan I'm really curious to see more of that.

    Jeremy Toppings no. There is good as far as carrying an authentic feel and homage for the original work, and there is good for the current audience. This is why older generations that remember and experienced the original in a more native environment, tend to react negatively. Now speilburg could make the movie pretty, with some nice action sequences, plenty of seamless CGI, and good dialogue. But he in my opinion is not the person to be able to capture the highly distinct and contrasting personality traits the major had both in the manga, and in the anime. Nor am I confident that he will be able to work in the subtle visual metaphors and nuanced references that made it interesting in the first place. Don't get me wrong. Spielberg is capable of capturing and communicating these complexities and cultural authenticity. But these traits were usually subtly, and deeply immersed within the plot, and tying into the next arc (or even the next season) across many episodes. Which is something that isn't possible to do in a 90 minute movie.

It’s true to the source material, beautifully filmed and cast (and even the creator have Johansson his blessing to play Major), one of the best scores I’ve ever heard, and a wonderful story with many homages to the other films. The fact that this has a lower rating from audiences than the live action Full Metal Alchemist movie (one of the most PAINFUL movies and adaptions I’ve ever sat through) tells me how many idiots there are.

She was not maimed or mutilated and rebuilt by corporate assholes trying to turn her into a super weapon. (Way over used in movies already btw). Her plight is in finding her identity but because she never had a body to begin with, she has always been a consciousness inside of a machine. That is where the name "Ghost In The Shell" comes from. I will still see it and probably love it, but I think they could have stayed truer to the origin in the movies.

    This movie looks incredible in 4K thanks to the brilliant implementation of HDR in its glorious full-screen 16:9 aspect ratio. It's tastefully stylised too with the Japanese subtitles and awesome setpieces as seen in the garden shootout at the end. Scarlett Johansson performs amazingly and I look forward to her reprising the role of Major in the sequel!

    Damn this just doesn't click for me. The story is too in your face here. The Major shouldn't be out looking for her past it should be revealed through her work, investigating crime. That'a key part of GITS. It's mainly about police work, this doesn't seem to be.

    the problem is that people who haven't seen the original don't know that Ghost in the Shell isn't a drama. The narrative of ghost in the shell is almost purely superficial, along with its characters honestly, but this made up for with its strong central theme and philosophical investigations drama is not what Ghost in the Shell did in 1995, and I agree, I feel like getting the personal stories of each character kinda detracts from the originals glimpse into the future of transhumanism, and how it effects all people differently, rather than making it a personal plot on why they underwent their changes in fact in the movie the reason why both Batou and the Major are cyborgs to begin with was through some contract, not through a deep personal background plot. It was the truth they had to accept: that they were property of the entity they worked for. And having it come right out to the viewer said to their face, it just seems blunt. I dunno, I really loved the original, there is a lot I think it has to say on its core concepts that I would love to see explored more. And I don't know, a dramatization of that just doesn't appeal to me I guess. :/

    Very much agreed. I think the whole issue is probably summed up nicely in that instead of the Major sitting on a boat contemplating that fact that if she jumped overboard she'd sink like a stone despite appearing otherwise to be a regular human we get a lesbian sex scene. The whole premise of self discovery is being dumbed down and presented very forcefully.

  • @MCCanaryVideos

    @MCCanaryVideos

    ***** there is also the fact that in the first few minutes of the video, the major is described as unique entity while in the original there is a subtle scene transition that shows the exact same model the Major is being used in business work it again is an analysis of the effects on the overarching human condition, not the individual to make the Major a unique entity removes this element of internal struggle the Major wrestles with as she has to deal with the fact that she has lost her true human form and what it means to truly be human but I agree: humanity is thus a lesbian sex scene the original was never about finding humanity it was about questioning what humanity itself was

    Well... This is obviously based off of stand alone complex due to the use of the geisha assassin androids which we can safely assume happens at the beginning of the film. In the manga/anime the Geisha look extremely life-like, the reason the government officials trusted them enough to let them within close proximity is because they think these women are real women. Androids in this universe were also created to have semi-human limitations to make them more real, so that people would be more comfortable with them. They can still fall from high distances, die in most ways that a human can, and can't dislocate their arms to walk like a spider or open their faces. Remember that the Geisha were originally the same sort of beings as Motoko so they have the same limitations as her if not less (she's considered to be one of the most successfully created androids). Then again, if the movie's actually good I can leave all of the poor adaptation behind and instead stick to a good story in a different universe using the same name to get money.

    I was initially bummed too but think of this: Cyberpunk is a genre spawned in the west. GITS wouldn't exist without Neuromancer, Snow Crash or Blade Runner, to name a few. America and Japan are the parents of Cyberpunk so I think both cultures "get it" as opposed to the live action Dragon Ball Z. Regarding Aeon Flux, Peter Chung is Korean American so it's a cultural fusion, Eastern action and animation combined with subversive underground animation that was growing in the US at the time.

    This is going to suck. Scarlett Johansson just isn't a good choice for Major Kusanagi. For one, she emotes way more than the Major should. The Major is stoic 90% of the time, so when she does show the slightest bit of emotion, it's powerful. This performance doesn't capture that stoicism. Plus, most of the scenes in this trailer are unoriginal. They just remade a lot of iconic scenes from the various animated movies and shows in live action. That doesn't give me much hope for the plot.

    I'm atleast half asian and I have to say this: why are people other than asians getting offended? this is just like people getting offended over Katy Perry wearing a kimono in her performance a few years ago. Fun Fact; A youtuber by the name ThatJapaneseManYuta interviewed a bunch of japanese people in japan on that performance, and you know what they thought? they thought it was a good performance and didn't represent their culture incorrectly. if asians in japan can avoid being triggered by a white person wearing a kimono, then they most likely won't mind Scarlett Johanson playing Mokoto Kusanagi, so do us all a favor and grow a pair.

    thats not the problem. the problem is that a white person is taking away a role meant for an asian actor in the industry where they get little representation other than stereotypes. it goes even deeper that just representing culture on screen.

    Killian Sweeney This isn’t for Asian markets. All asian movies are 99% asian. When they interviewed regular people in Japan, they all weren’t even expecting a asian major.

    Many who consider themselves social justice warriors live in a culture of offense. They are perpetually offended. To those people, there is nothing good or right. America is a place that needs to be destroyed and they lift their hand to destroy us. Welcome to the miseducated generation.

    The movie played it safe - taking ideas from the original two movies aswell the series. Mixed them up a bit and the result was a solid 4 out of 5 movie. Nothing extra but a good entertainment while it runs. This is quite good compared to some other live action remakes.

    I think they do. I read some where they brought on the original composer from the anime to make the music for the movie. Its just they chose to use a different song to hype the movie for western audiences. There a trailer out with the original sound track from the anime showing the shelling scene from the anime except from the live action movie if you wanna check it out.
