This movie may no be a masterpiece but in my opinion is the best anime adaptation to date, with that said I appreciate that the stay somewhat true to the looks and feel of the anime/source material.

It’s very pretty but way too far from the source material. They dropped all the core philosophical arguments about the nature of self, and they didn’t replace it with anything worthwhile. It’s like they watched the original on mute 😂😂

This movie was an incredible visual Masterpiece just like the original 1995 anime, Stand Alone Complex series and the rest of the Ghost in the Shell Franchise! Scarlett Johansson did a great job at portraying the Major Motoko Kusanagi!

hardly passed it's budget. shame on you anime, tech lovers. movie was good adaptation for me. couldn't make good money but, i want to watch more movies from this hardcore anime.

Not even Tom Cruise and great ratings could even save Edge of Tomorrow from a box office flop. Anime adaptation, no matter how good they are, are pretty much cursed -unless it was made under special circumstances. This new GitS had to face several problems, being too faithful to the original would make the story too generic(it was made in 1990, there are tons of movie that runs in the same veins of drama and sci-fi that GitS did since 1990), irrelevant, and probably won't even find a studio that would market it on western side without "known" and "profitable" actors/actress. Being too different(even if it ended up good, people would still say that it's just borrowing the huge name of the anime to market the movie). It's a lose-lose case, that's why Anime adapted movie is called the "cursed" project by many directors and studio execs -says Rupert Sanders himself. I myself like this one, I think they did it the safe way while not sacrificing the core of the movie scenes, the principles, and revolves more around Mira Killian. They even somehow managed to integrate the so-called whitewashing into it's story.

That 80's Lotus Esprit deserved more time in the movie.

I don't know why people were so hung up on the racial casting on this movie. The 95 movie had NOTHING to do with race. It did not matter what race the major was. It made no difference to the story of movie. The only thing people care about in both the movie's universes is whether you have cyborg parts. In other words, race was never an aspect of these movies.

I love this movie. I saw it three times in theaters. I'm ordering my copy today.

Just remember critics preferred Ant-Man and the Wasp over this.

Binoche had a small role in GODZILLA 2014. She also co-starred with Robert Pattinson in an unconventional sci-fi drama in 2018 called HIGH LIFE.

This movie has the same problem as Tron Legacy. It's not catered towards everybody and that's why it's not a huge success moneywise. I hope that this one, unlike Tron, will get a sequel.

Bad news: Tron 3 was cancelled. Good news: the script is being adapted into a reboot of the franchise starring Jared Leto.

I love how they based this film on the future☺☺

I've just noticed how the entire city is completely devoid of people. Didn't they have a budget to hire a few extras to stand in the streets and make the place look inhabited? Remember how this scene included a market place (in the anime) and how there were actual people? It just fleshes out the city. It's what Blade Runner did well. It made it feel like a real city.

And in the movie, this guy used HV ammo which can cause a car to blow up

Great, great film. Dumbass college students of course cried a river about it because of "whitewashing", because getting upset for people who aren't upset is what's in, but the movie itself was pretty damn good. It doesn't have the same existential themes of the original, but it does some clever things with the concept of "self", and what it's supposed to be defined for, and the movie just looks great. It's not the original, and it's not trying to be. But it's up there with different takes on the source material, like SAC, and it's definitely better than Arise.

If you watch the extras on the Blu-ray dvd the original creator of ghost in the shell basically gives his blessing to the movie and tells them to create their own version of the anime.

The only way I would be interested in this, is if they released a Directors Cut.

I enjoyed the movie- but the original anime was way way better. I really didnt enjoy Batou- it should have been Dolph Lundgren- or a look alike same size. Also, Aramaki was nowhere close to the original anime. I still enjoyed it- but I enjoy any Sci Fi movie anyways. :-)

It's cool, visuals are great, story is good enough if you're not a hardcore purist fan of the original anime and manga. There's lots of fan service and scenes ripped straight from the 1995 animated film (which were fuckin awesome btw) I loved it tbh, but I'm inherently biased cus I love everything Cyberpunk.

AlexRE005 it is a great movie. it helps to understand it a little but bstter if you have the original anome movie, but it is still great if you love futuristic society style movies. most people were just mad that the lead actor was white instead of asian like in the original...which is kind of atupid to get worked up about :/

SAC's Tachikomas: Does a non humanoid shell makes us not human/not having Ghosts? Does our brain being apart from our body means we aren't human as a whole? GitS 2017: Does a female shell means she identifies as a woman? Does a Caucasian Shell make her not Japanese? Does having a brain different from the body means she isn't human? But it's not like they were faithful or anything, considering most critics comparing it to 95 only knew GitS from 95.

The original movie was pretty true to the manga though

Batou with cybernetic eyes and a clean shot at a gunman waits for six, solid seconds before firing. Major uses kicks, flips and punches against another cyborg, but those shouldn't have done much damage. Disabling a hand and leg in the anime made a lot of sense. This looks like garbage in eight minutes or less.

In this version, Batou just got his eyes, and the garbage men did not have Cybernetic limbs.

I mean, if you're making a film with western money for western audiences, a big famous western actress in the lead role would draw most attention. Makes sense. In an ideal world things would be different, but you know, money.

I really want to know why 2 garbage men have full auto weapons and cloaking tech. That is the only thing I don't get about this part.

Because they've been equipped by the A.I. that is manipulating/hacking them...it doesn't play out the exact same way in the original and I barely remember anything from this movie lol.

My biggest frustration with the film is the deleted monk scenes. If there's one thing in the Ghost in the Shell world that they haven't touched on, it's the religion aspect.

Yes. Annoyingly, Rupert Sanders said there would be no deleted scenes on the DVD / Blu-Ray releases. I suspect a better film was shot, than the one we got to see. There seem to be enough loose ends in the theatrical release to suggest they changed the film. Eg. Kuze hooks Motoko up to his network, but we see nothing happen in cyberspace - he just takes her down again. Also, she leaves the apartment on her motorcycle, but how does she know how to find Kuze at the old house in the "lawless zone?" There must be a missing connecting scene. So much hinted at in the trailer that does not make it into the film. The film must have been altered and it is frustrating that Rupert Sanders does not seem to care.

I really wanted to like this movie and based on Sanders' directing style (check his commercials and music videos) I had rather optimistic expectations. Sadly, I felt disappointed after watching.. Besides lacking " organic grit" of its animated predecessor, there is too many plot holes and too many aspects of this movie that simply don't make much sense. Lack of logic even affected the look of portrayed world. For example in this extended clip the streets are empty from any traffic or pedestrians and omnipresent soligrams seem to float everywhere without any purpose or even actual technological means to exist. This apparent lack of depth affected all layers of this movie. I hope that in his next project Sanders will scale down and return to his gritty roots. He is very talented but seems to have not understood the source material.

They need to edit this movie again since it has all the elements but somehow they mess it up by trying to simplify it for American audiences. Why do you have to always have the evil one-dimensional executive? I bet you 1000 to 1 Americans would have liked it better if all the sophisticated philosophical elements were there. I think movie executives underestimate their American audiences or are dumb themselves.
