You need to search KZread for the HellFest 2016 concert with Ghost as the final act. Their show is absolutely fantastic, and is what completely and utterly solidified me as a Ghost fanatic! The song you are listening to, He Is, played live is something truly to behold! Stunning, jaw-dropping, and mystical are simply words to describe the power of this song live. The whole show, which has so many of their great songs, including a powerful rendition of Year Zero, is one of the best they ever did! Check it out. HellFest France, 2016!

Well acctially. This song has been playing on Swedish radio for about 3-4 years. And yes they are awesome.

I looked it up and it is definitely Latin. Ghost uses a lot of Latin in their music. Nostro Dis Pater (the first phrase) our force driven father. Nostr' alma mater (the second phrase) our nurturing mother. Bother phrases together could also mean our driving force.

Dis pater (or Dispater) is a Roman god of the underworld who's name became synonymous with the Devil or a major demonic figure in later Christian demonology. In the Dante's Inferno, the city of Dis is a major location and encompasses the lower circles of Hell. Dis pater - the father (as in patriarch) of Dis. The name Dispater and the city of Dis even got recycled in D&D as one of the archdevils and the name of his realm.

Beautiful performance. Never seen this one.. I mostly stick to the official videos or studio versions of songs. This was a very good performance when compared to the official studio version. I am impressed yet again with Ghost. Peace

Dis pater, or Dispater, is an old Roman god who later transformed into Pluto. He is the lord of the underworld (more like, lord of the riches of the underworld, gold, etc., not really a god a death). And later it was equated to a demon by the Christians, or even the Devil. It’s name means “father of the riches” (pater=father ; dis=derived from the Latin word “dives” which means “riches”)

GHOST was the first concert I saw with my son and daughter...so impressed!!!!!!! GHOST rules...!!!! Best stage show ever !!!!!

Finally got around to watch this video.. was introduced to this band back around 2012/2013 before they hit it big. A co-worker of mine showed me this band while working 3rd shift and I have been a fan for a while. It’s great to see people fall in love with this band. I feel one of the best rock/metal bands of the last 10 years.

I love many of Ghost 's songs. Papa 's voice can be chilling. My favorite is Deux in Absentia. I also love I believe. My boyfriend 's favorite is Absolution. As with many others, our first taste of Ghost was Square Hammer.

You should check out some of the acoustic videos. Like Jigolo Har Megiddo, If You Have Ghosts, or Dance Macabre. It really highlights Tobias’s vocal abilities.

Others have covered the meaning behind this song in the comments more than adequately, so I won't repeat that. I will say that this is my favorite Ghost song and I've gotten to see them perform it live a couple times - it's amazing and beautiful live. Glad you're enjoying your descent into Ghost's catalog - they have a lot of great songs. You should definitely check out "Ritual", which was their first song to ever get radio airplay and kind of launched them onto the scene. Other great songs are "Year Zero", "Square Hammer", and "Danse Macabre", which are all very catchy.

Year Zero live is one of their best live songs... if not THE best. Although, it's fun to get your dance on to Square Hammer, Kiss the Go Goat, Dance Macabre. Hmm it's all good! Lol

From Latin, the phrase translates to “Our father of riches/wealth” Note the use of Nostro indicates a masculine perspective. “Dis Pater” is also a name for a god of the underworld. “Dis Pater” or “Father of Riches” originally belonged to a deity of “riches that came from below” (either referring to precious minerals or to agriculture). It was adapted by later contributors to the Roman Pantheon “riches”, interpreted as material temptations and “below” as the underworld. This potentially gives further significance to the title as it may refer to someone who was misconstrued as malevolent. From Latin Nostr'Alma Mater translates to “Our Nurturing Mother”. Papa Emeritus III indicates how the devil acts as a fatherly figure to him, teaching him and making him grow.

There are some fully acoustic performances on YT - specifically the acoustic sessions in Paris 06/12/2015 are what really sold me on Ghost. Amateur shot, but they're' excellent.

"We're guided by the morning star" Morning star is another name for Lucifer. That make the "He's insurrection, he is spite"part make more sense doesn't it?

To set the record completely straight about this song: A Nameless Ghoul told Loudwire that there are various degrees of personal meaning within the song, one of which is the lyrics. He explained that the original demo lyrics were "bogus" and did not have any "bite", but following the 2014 suicide of Selim Lemouchi, guitarist of the Dutch rock band the Devil's Blood who was friends with members of Ghost, the lyrics materialized.

If you ever have a chance to see them live, do it. Also interviews with Tobias Forge (the singer) are always very interesting. He thinks a lot about everything and gives quite an insight into his music and influences. And as others have said, the other language really is latin.

It's about Lucifer aka the morning star. He's the shining of the light without whom I cannot see.

Years ago when I researched this the Latin phrase translated to “ he is my mother , he is my father”.

When a band cares enough to put together such a wonderful fucking video pageant to go along with a great song just makes me love them all the more. My degree has finally come to use lol. nostro dis pater, nostr' alma mater. its latin. it means literally 'our rich father, our generous mother'. dis pater in roman religion refers to pluto (hades) and alma mater was used to refer to various goddesses but in catholoicism is used to refer to mother mary. Im not sure if Tobias meant something else by dis pater, but i've never heard it used in another context

If you get the chance, I definitely recommend checking out the acoustic versions of some of their songs. I particularly like the acoustic version of Ghuleh/Zombie Queen as it's nice, pretty, and great, but it's also silly with some kazoo bits.

I was introduced to Ghost BC , as they were then known in 2014. Watch "Monstrance Clock".. Awesome song! Their album titles are all in Latin too. If you watch interviews with Tobias Forge, the singer, he talks about a teacher he had who hated him and made his life miserable. I guess he had Satanic tendencies and she drove him into the arms of Satan. I adore this band!!! ❤❤❤😊

I think its something like "our father from below the ground, our nourishing mother" (alma mater is also used as a term for universities but I don't think that would make any sense^^). So it's pretty much Pluto/Hades/Satan/whatever and a caring mother. I might be wrong though, it's been quite some time since I attended latin lessons in school.

MORE GHOST ! the Loma Vista version of He Is is very good and it would be a good choice to watch together with your daughter. Then try Life Eternal by Ghost. Have fun, this band is all about having a good time with the music.

It's not completely recognisable Latin but, (roughly) translated means 'Our god of the underworld (Hell) (Nostro Dis Pater), Nourishing Mother (Nostr' alma mater)' - although there is some debate about the exact translation

If you watch “Special Ghoul’s” interview with Elliot from Little Punk People (the one from 2015), around the 3:13 mark, he describes what “He Is” is about. Of course in Ghost lore, the song is about Lucifer (The Morningstar), but in reality, it has a deeper meaning than that. Also watch the actual music video! It plays on the tele-evangelists that are money hungry and that people follow blindly. Maybe those will both help you understand it better. 😊 You should react to Dance Macabre next!

It seems like every group, and 'some' solos, have at least one 'odd' song on (almost) every album they release. I kinda like this one.

When I looked up the lyric it says "Nostro dis pater, nostr' alma mater" but what I hear is (nostro des patre, nostra amata or amate) which is give our father, our beloved or love. But this is what I hear. Others might hear our father, our mother which to me doesn't make sense seeing how the song is about the morning star.
