‘Ghost Cars': Blurred Plates, No Plates on Philly Streets, Beyond

“If you cover your tag… what are you hiding?” NBC10’s Randy Gyllenhaal reports on so-called “ghost cars” with no license plates or obscured plates on Philadelphia streets. I've had to go to court 5 times here in philly, each time it was due to either a faulty red light camera or I was doing a legal maneuver and the camera took a pic like I was in violation (Like turning right at a red light, where it was legal to do so). True story: a woman in Texas was told she could not renew her registration because of three unpaid tolls. The tolls, penalties, interest, court costs, and "fees" totaled $3,400. The thing about the license plate covers that obscure the plates is that when you get your annual safety inspection sticker, the guy doing the inspection is supposed to give you a failed sticker for improper equipment on your car. Simple solution: Remove that plate cover when you get the inspection done and put it back on when you get home with your proper sticker. That said, one of the reasons that cars have license plates that are supposed to be visible to everyone is so that if you're the victim of a hit and run accident, you should be able to take down the plate and report that to the insurance company and the police report. If you're in favor of hiding your plates for anonymity and you're the victim of aforementioned hit and run and YOU have to pay the deductible on your insurance claim, I don't feel badly for you.

Think about it! If you crash into a parked ghost car by accident but you are honest to leave a note on the windshield about the minor accident & contact info. You know the car you actually hit but without the VIN number & a missing or cover up license plate, you really can't prove or verify ownership of that car because the operator of the car, possibly the REAL owner.... know the same vehicle is not street legal and/or avoiding accountability, especially with the government ( law enforcement, Dept of Transportation, repossession company) I'm sure you don't want to do the right thing for the wrong people because the car could be stolen & you reimburse the car thief, or they victimize you, if your lucky the criminal denies association with the car. The ghost car tactics only make sense to irresponsible people like criminals or dead beats. Same is true when police ask people for their name, but the suspect either lie or dont tell them their real name because they something to hide.

Also in Pennsylvania if your registration gets suspended your supposed to mail your plate in, now it's a contradiction

In Ontario Canada those cars would be towed away regardless. One of my cars got towed away when I was at work, cause it had one of my plate that wasn't registered to it.

And that’s how you get a car stealing problem. Don’t enforce tags or vin numbers and suddenly a lot cars get stolen. Just one more reason to not live in Philadelphia.

This is a major problem throughout Canada and England. In Canada, police will automatically stop you if they have an issue reading your plate or if it comes up shown as stolen.

Just start towing them if you can't see the vin or no plate

When the police see these cars, they're not allowed to pull them over because there's an alien inside with no license or car insurance.

I don't understand why cars driving without license plates aren't immediately pulled over by the police. They used to be. What changed?
