With automatic headlights so extremely common this is more of a problem with older vehicles. The problem I deal with way more frequently than “phantom vehicles” is vehicles that drive with the high beam headlights on and fail to dim them for oncoming traffic. For every “phantom vehicle” I encounter I pass 10 vehicles that refuse to dim their high beams. As lights get brighter and output more lumens, this is a far more modern issue that will need addressed.
@rallysauruswrex

Definitely not more of a problem with older vehicles. You cannot see the instrument panel unless your headlights are on in older cars. This is true. It's not as dangerous when looking at an individual case vs a phantom car, but overall, it's a lot more common and is beyond annoying. People feel like they need high beams on all night as if the headlights aren't already bright enough. Also, there are some cars whose headlights are too bright, or they're aimed poorly, and it produces a similar effect to observing a car with the high beam on. I flashed my lights at a 2021+ Mazda CX-5 who was across the intersection from me because I really thought that his/her high beams were on. Turns out they weren't, and the driver kinda decided to be a jerk about it.

I definitely feel it straining my eyes when I drive at night. I mean, people will literally flash bang your car and not notice. Back in the day it used to be an indicator that the car was hotwired and stolen
They are only NOW finding this out? But the rest of us have known this for YEARS. And I got a ticket for 'failure to yield' just a month back. I topped at an intersection where the over head light was not working. Checked both ways, all clear, and turned right. The car coming from the left just barely missed me.... and turned on it's red and blues. That was one PO's officer. When I told him he might just turn his headlights on at 2:30 AM, he yelled at me that his lights come on automatically and my excuses made him even more angry. OK, fine, but he still did not have his headlights on. He cited me, threatened me with arrest when I told him giving me a citation would not change the fact he did not have his headlights on. Anyway, the next day, I sent the dash cam vid from the rear camera. along with the citation, to the prosecutor's office. Still waiting for them to call the dogs off. The vid shows that the officer did not have his lights on. Well, he had his 'parking' lights on, but you really had a hard time seeing them against the lights of the mall behind him that were nearly the exact same color. Let's see this one go to court. Turn your lights on, people. Your car has a green light on the dash indicating the headlights on. And our Ford LTD from many years ago would have an audio clip saying 'headlights suggested' (or something like that. That was before I was driving). I guess it was too expensive to add that sensor so they stopped doing that. But that was on the order of 50 years ago. And this vid says that they are , only now, adding that technology. And we should be able to override the 'automatic' headlights. We are required to have only parking lights when we approach our military checkpoint.

I think the move away from the old orange sodium streetlamps to ultra-bright LED ones is a problem too. When I ride my bike at night, I sometimes forget to put my lights on because the LED lights around me are so bright that I don't notice that I haven't switched them on. I also think they trick your brain into thinking it's daytime. They definitely have that effect on wildlife. They mess with their natural sleep cycles. They had that effect on me too. I had to buy a blindfold because my neighbour's backyard light shines straight into my bedroom and I couldn't get to sleep because of it. Just too much light pollution in general these days.

Agree totally. However, it's not just cars blinding me; it's oncoming cyclists and their lights blinding me. Cyclists need to aim their lights down at the road and not in my eyes. It's really bad on trails.
i think another thing to mention and this has happened to me is that people leave their lights in auto, and they somehow get turned off and the driver does not realize they are not in auto anymore.
Wow, I'm in the Boston area, but this ATL piece popped up in my feed. What you said here at 1:20 has been my theory for awhile now. So relieved in seeing that I'm not alone in my concerns and that carmakers like GM and Porsche have taken notice as well. Last year, I rented a hybrid Escape. So many settings (literally, bells & whistles), it was challenging just to find what lights to use! (My own car is a 25 y.o. Saab, so safe & simple.) Forget flashing your highbeams; they won't notice, and most don't seem to care or even know what this means anymore. It's illegal to drive this way for good reason: Safety laws were written in blood. And don't even get me started on cars w/o plates, they're everywhere. We're living in a very me, me, me, narcissistic and selfish society.🙄
I think the shift to LED lighting is a big part of this too. It's easy to tell the difference between running lights and headlights with halogens, but some of these new LEDs are so bright that you can easily mistake DRLs for headlights, especially if you're not used to them. I had it happen with a rental myself a while back, leaving a friend's place in an unlit semi-rural neighborhood and the DRLs were easily putting out enough to drive around with so I didn't realize the mistake until I stopped at a traffic light on a main street and noticed that the dash lighting seemed too bright.

I disagree personally. It's the same principle, just different intensity. Headlights are on because you can see a clear cut-off. Drls are on because the light is scattered everywhere. It's the same thing with halogens. Those people simply don't pay attention to how the lights being displayed to indicate their light status
The people driving without their lights are the same people not using their blinkers and the same ones sitting in the left lane with a continuous stream of cars passing them on the right. People who honestly should not be driving at all
I am glad to see that something is being done to improve the situation. Although it seems like once again we are using technology to correct our poor human behavior instead of improving ourselves.

People are so lazy. Just turn on the lights get your fatass outside the car and look to make sure they are working before you drive off.
I usually leave my Lexus lights to Auto, but whenever I take it in for service, the mechanic turns them to Off. One evening, after picking up my vehicle from the mechanic, I drove in the dark for several miles without noticing the lights were off because the running lights were lighting the way. It wasn’t until I tried to flip on the Brights that I noticed something was wrong.
Driving without headlights is becoming way too common bc of the type of lights on the instrument panel. Auto headlights should be required on all cars
Its interesting to me that my entire family owns a car older then 10 years where analog gauges are still a thing. The newest car we've ever owned was from 2010.
My biggest pet peeve. Your day time running lights aren’t sufficient at night people 🙄🙄🙄
People used to communicate really well with a simple high beam flick or leave your blinker on in front of them for a min till they get the message, or turn your lights on and off, but people are too stupid now where they dont get the damn message no matter how long you follow them and keep trying.
I agree with the Canadian regulations here in the US, auto on tail lights when the vehicle is on or driving more than 5mph.

Canadians have to step in because the NHTSA hasn't done anything for safety since 1986. They're 10-20 years behind EU regulations, and Canada still chooses to blindly follow NHTSA over European regulations, with little twist in their regulations like mandatory immobilizers in all cars, daytime running lights, and now Auto lights
I've been driving since 1991 and have never forgotten to put my lights on, very first thing I do before turning a wheel in the dark like anyone with half a brain and an excess of 75 IQ would do when they see no beam pattern on the road in front of them.

Sometimes those daytime running lights are bright enough to put a bit of a beam pattern on the road. I noticed the increase in amount of cars. Even when I flash them they continue and don’t fix the problem.
In most places flashing the headlights means a traffic cop is nearby or the trucker passing you is clear to move over back into the cruise lane. Flashing blue lights work best.
I've seen this way too many times driving in the Blueridge mountains. On top of that, the phantom cars always have 5% tinted windows.
Those big center screens are blinding, making it harder to see the road. Then you get Tesla with everything on the center screen and no mechanical switches or knobs pulls a driver's eyes off the road for far too long.
I recently seen this on the highway I tried to warn them but they got off the exit, no rear lights but they had their headlights on, sometimes it’s just a blown fuse but this is good info to share..
My old 2009 Audi A6 had a feature like the Porsche. If you came to a stop and turned the lights off, though, they'd stay off. But it wouldn't let you turn them off while in motion

This is an exciting discussion. I moved from Brazil to the US in early 2022, and ghost drivers were also a problem in my home country. To make matters worse, Brazil is an undeveloped country, and small motorcycles are the only transportation option for millions. One evening I was cruising down the road at around 60 mph, and there was a small motorcycle with a couple on it going downhill at roughly 40, but no functioning taillight was present in that bike. It seemed neither had $1 left to spend on a damn lamp that could save their lives. Luckily, I could only spot them on time because my headlights detected the reflection of some chromes and the overall silhouette of the motorcycle and its riders in the shade. There would probably have been two fatalities if a drunk driver were going 90 mph in a 2-ton truck behind them instead of me. And all because of a stupid $1 lamp. I hate modern cars in many ways, but it baffles me non-stop dashboard illumination could be so dangerous, just like infotainment systems are. I grew up in the 90s while being transported in some old GM vehicles made in America equipped with that cool "Twilight Sentinel" feature, in which sensors detect the amount of daylight reaching the vehicle and turn on cars' lights accordingly. So, why the problem? Today, young folks grow up with their eyeballs stuck on their smartphones and seriously lack survival awareness of their surroundings. These kids are clueless about anything offline. I have driven unsafe, manual, old cars for most of my life and always watch all mirrors at all times. I got involved in two minor accidents in the last 15 years but never hit a car or caused an accident. Automakers are trying to fix the ghost-car problem, but there might be a downside. Have you ever wondered why cop cars never have seat belt beeps? Lights that come back on even when you intentionally turn them off can be a life-threatening problem for the same reason. Imagine if you need to follow the kidnapper of your child at night but can't be spotted by them, or you need to escape from a jeopardizing situation at night without being noticed, either.

Drivers are getting way too lazy, and car manufacturers are only encouraging the problem. Advertising "hands free driving" in a commercial where a guy plays patty-cake behind the wheel of a 1ton truck on the freeway....... wat??? Not even joking. I can't tell you how many times on my motorcycle I have seen drivers lane change without looking, then suddenly their Blind Spot Alert goes crazy and they look over and see me about to be crushed by their 4000lb cage. I don't ride any more. I have a friend who backed her friend's car into a wall because it didn't have a camera and didn't beep and didn't stop for her, she just expected the car to do everything for her...... Don't get me started on Tesla advertising "full self drive" that is illegal
This has been a non-issue in gm vehicles for over two decades with their automatic headlights. That is unless someone overrides them and turns them off.
One of my pet peeves is that every time I take a vehicle in for service, for some reason they turn off the automatic headlights. Even if the service has nothing to do with those lights. I'm not sure why they do this.

You would think mandating the headlamps on at all times wouldn't be such a big deal (especially since most cars now have LEDs instead of halogens that blow bulbs); it has been mandated for motorcycles in most countries since the 60s (including the US). This is why you never see a motorcycle without lights (front and rear) on the road today unless the bike has a malfunction or it is a vintage bike manufactured before the regulations.
I drive professionally across the country and this happens far too often. What's worse is usually the driver who's rear lights are not on has no idea
In Miami, every single night I drive, I spot 2-3 cars or more, no lights on, without fail.
I think people should appreciate the service. You either have no car, your car broke down, your going to the bar or airport, didn't rent a car on vacation. I wish Uber and Lyft would go up to just below taxi prices and pay the driver more. They been paying 50-69 per mile in this area for years
I hate this trend of "screens in your car". Even ignoring the reliability issues, the LAST thing I want to do after working my 8 to 5 is stare at another freaking screen. They don't even look good and are wayy to bright at night and dark during the day!

Agreed. I hate to tape a bunch of paper over the radio on a rental car once cause even at minimum dimmer switch, the screen provided too much glare at night. Can't feel the controls on a screen either. Even with physical instruments, a lot of automakers have a habit of making them light up blue for some reason, which is just terrible for your night vision! I'd say cars should be more like planes in regards to physical controls and lighting, but many planes are starting to get this kind of junk installed in them too!

Working for several car dealerships I've learned that many people are just too stupid and/or lazy to figure out a lot of simple features like headlamps, let alone how to even drive the car. At this point they should just make them automatic with a complicated procedure for the average consumer to over-ride, like removing a fuse.
Now do a story on ghost cars like ghost guns... tons of cars riding around this city with fake drive out tags for the criminals to cover their whereabouts and identity. This renders the license plate readers cameras useless! I know I'm not the only one that's noticed this. There were numerous hit and run accidents on a lot of the dashcam compilation channels, particularly from Milwaukee, with people with NO plates causing accidents and hitting and running.
