Opening Music - Rest Upon the Edge - Trevor Kowalski
open.spotify.c...
Prior to the implementation of Sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, this beautiful Italian port, was home to a number of superyachts owned by Russians whom are now on those US, EU and UK sanctions lists.
This included M/Y Universe allegedly owned by Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian President. A source close to the vessel once saying it was owned by a ‘very high up Russian politician’. This yacht left rather luckily one day before the early morning raids by Italian Guarda di Finanza (iItalian Financial police) on another yacht in the marina. Universe fled to Turkey, being one of the first to do so and seemingly set a trend for other Russian owned boats to follow.
Other boats that call Imperia home for most of the year are M/Y Galaxy of Happiness owned by God Nisanov now Sanctioned by the US, this yacht has been seemingly towed from the Med to Turkey in the last few days. Another yacht, the 72 metre or 236 feet M/Y Predator owned by IKSANDER MAKHMUDOV who is not currently on any sanctions lists. However his vessel, which is almost always berthed here has not broadcast on AIS for almost 3 months and her last known location depsite saying Rhodes in Greece on Marine Traffic shows the vessel next to a swimming pool in a house in Corsica!
M/Y Clio 72 m 238 Feet Lurssen owned by Oleg Deripaska also usually enjoys Imperia’s coastline, however at the time of the Invasion of Ukraine she was in the Maldives. After a month she transited the Suez Canal to Turkey and headed to Russia via the Bosperas, turning off her AIS as soon as she cleared the strait. She has been seen on satellite coverage in a marina near Sochi.
Most of the vessels left prior to a string of arrests by the Italian authorities but this one, M/Y Lady M did not. Lady M was arrested along with another vessel M/Y Lena in San Remo an hour down the coast. Lady M is owned by Alexei Mordashov, one of the richest men in Russia making much of his money from the Steel Industry. Mr Mordashov though does not own just one yacht, and in fact his other yacht is much larger than this one and that vessel fled sanctions, but to Vladivostok in Russia. His other yacht being M/Y Nord.

Especially in this age of media where you never know who is telling the truth or what the truth is. Although it's kinda easy to see what's happening in Ukraine. Curious if they would have quit or if they would work for the same person again? I would hope that if it was myself, I would have quit or never worked for them again.

Very good Detective work. Sorry about all the crew and follow on personnel that will be affected. The large yachts will hurt more, because they require more specialized facilities / personnel. On the other hand it is very revealing that a high percentage of the 295+ Yachts are Russian owned - seems to reinforce the idea that the funding of these vessels is not from clean money. Lurssen will just have to make money building less than 295" foot SY.

Great Job again. You news briefs are so much more informative than the amateurs in DC. Maybe you should bring your level of professionalism and dedication to journalism to the big 4 outlets. The world would be a more stable place. No bias just giving the facts you know at the moment with later additions and addendums. Kudos to you. Pulitzer worthy. Let’s goooo

That is such an outstanding tagline I have to mention it, "If you're not the paying customer, you are the product.", true, concise, and even kinda entertaining. My compliments to whoever is responsible for that little gem. They are all stunning vessels and I am certain that I could quickly develop the habit of enjoying coffee in the early morning air on an open deck. I have never washed a yacht of their size and calibre and I realize that efficient methods and procedures would be employed, so I am wondering how long would it reasonably take to complete that task? I'll never forget the first time I ever "waxed" a cruiser, it was my buddy and myself and it was done completely by hand, no electric polisher on that job! Haahaaa! If I recall correctly it was a 12 metre ~ 40-foot Chris Craft and it was sitting in the marina yard. We truly had no idea what we were getting ourselves into hahaaa! It did sparkle and shine by the end of the day though. The bit at the end that mentions some of the effects felt by sanctions also lists some of the reasons that I kinda expected the invasion to be over by now. I thought that the oligarchs would quickly grow weary of their world grinding to a sudden stop as well as others such as people in the military and citizens not wanting the war and not wanting to lose any more people and a million other reasons. I expected some of them to quietly form a group and deliver the Julius Caesar treatment to Vladimir Putin. It could certainly still happen, but I did think it might have happened by now. Even if that did take place it doesn't necessarily mean that the invasion would stop. What a mess. Great reporting, as usual, I appreciate your efforts. Thank you!

You could easily combine some of these features on KZread into a compelling documentary about how sanctions are impacting the yachting industry. Perhaps some affected crew would agree to be interviewed if image / voice scrambled.

I feel very sad for the crews of these beautiful vessels who have lost their jobs through sanctions. Whilst it is difficult for the Russian yacht owners, I think they are better able to weather the sanctions than the little people. I have some questions about the Ensign, is it flown whilst at sea or only in port? Why is it only flown between 8am and 8pm?

It is based on the traditions of the Royal Navy. They used to fly the White Ensign 24 hours a day, whether they were at sea or in port. Then a civil servant realised that there was no need to fly the ensign at night as it couldn't be seen. And by doing so would prolong the life of the ensign and save money! So the Royal Navy lowered the ensign at sunset and raised it at sunrise. Civilian vessels then adopted the practice too.
