    "Homely" doesn't mean "ugly" in America, it means "plain", whereas in Britain, "homely" means "simple, but cozy and comfortable". David, you were correct in your use of the word.

    David, When doing livestreams, can I recommend that you have somebody off camera monitoring the comment and passing appropriate questions to you to ask the guest? Having you and the guest watch the comments scroll in creates lots of dead air time and you staring into the screen. Keep up the great work.

    I feel like I've won an Oscar! Homely is certainly used in the UK in the way you describe. 'US/UK Two nations divided by a common language' Churchill I think. In LA once I was asked how am I doing and I said 'I'm fine thanks' and they walked off. I think they thought I was implying I was good looking!

  • @grondhero

    @grondhero

    No, they would not think you were being conceited about your looks. In the US, depending on how well you know the person and if you're walking passed each other or actually sitting down to talk, when someone asks "how are you" or "how are you doing" it's almost like saying "Hello." Your response of "I'm fine, thanks," is just like a reply. Almost like you were having the same conversation on bicycles going opposite directions. Now, if you were sitting down with a familiar friend and they asked "how are you doing," then they would stay and talk. In an odd way, with our busy lives, the response "I'm fine" often means "Things aren't great, but they aren't so bad we need to stop everything we're doing and talk about it." On the flip side, when a woman you're familiar with says, "I'm fine" or "fine," then it usually means the opposite and you've done something wrong. 😉 Oddities of cultures of similar peoples. 🙂

    David, thanks for another glimpse into the world of yachting! I am one of those viewers who is intent on winning the lottery, and I like to plan ahead a little. So, I was wondering if you could help me with this slightly abstract question that's been bugging me for a while (and I'm already afraid the answer is going to be "it varies case by case"): when commissioning a superyacht, how is the price tag broken down? In other words, what percentage of the total costs are typically spent in categories such as: Hull; Engineering (engines, nav gear etc); Design (naval, exterior, interior) & testing (CFD, tank test); Interior. Hope you can shed some light!

    Hello David! You seem to be doing well and less stressed than a few months prior. 🙂 Could you explain what it means when you say "gross tonnage by volume?" My understanding (and this is why I'm confused) is that "gross tonnage by volume" refers to the _air space_ inside a boat, so how do they measure that? And is it the volume of space taking into account just the hull or do they take into consideration doors, walls, storage, etc.? If you could answer that, or have a shipyard answer that on one of your tours 😉, that would be great. Thanks, and have a great day!

Seeing that you going to details about the particulars of the M/Y could you go into details about the waste system. I've done a little research on aircraft carriers and they carry up to approximately 46 to maybe 6,000 on board. Approximately how many heads are on a mega yacht for passengers as well as crew members and how does that system operate.

    Ok, I was under the impression that Fulk Al Salamah was part of the Royal Navy of Saudi Arabia(????). It has been called a support vessel for Al Said although it's larger. If so, it wouldn't count as a superyacht per se kind of along the lines of REV. If it's gonna count as a superyacht, at 164 meters and 20,0000 GT, it's the largest superyacht by volume. I've seen it on some lists and not seen it on others.

    The 10% rule can apply to which yacht you can afford and maintain. Example. If your wealth is $10 million. You can afford a $1 million yacht over time. $10mil. - $1mil = $9mil 9mil with 3% dividends = $270.000/y, which gives you plenty of room for unexpected expences. Note. If you buy a 30 year old 85ft yacht for 1mil, then the maintanence can be higher than 10%. Always do the maths before you buy.

    Frankly, when you get up to these gigayachts... If they serve a purpose like Octopus and REV, it's fantastic. If they're just somebody's vacation place, I find it getting into the realm of the ridiculous. But, anyone can use their own money as they see fit, and I can still admire the building of them, and it's lots and lots of work for the people who work for the yards, and that's a good thing. And of course, these enormous yachts have the added advantage, that if you bring your dog with you, it can get it's exercise just from taking a few turns on the upper deck 😂

    I don't think legally there's a limit; it's all about costs and practicality. A cruise ship could be converted to a yacht just by eliminating the number of rooms. As Almost YummyMummy stated, the costs would be unimaginable for us. _Generally speaking_ the costs of running a luxury yacht are 10% of its purchase price per year. So these $300 million giga yachts cost $30 million per year to run. But when you're a multi-billionaire....

Also my buddy whom I told to take advantage of Zillow causing the housing crisis. Dude gets to charge an arm and leg and still not feel bad cause Zillow exists. Even though a lottery win is a one time thing, assuming you do not spend the entire lottery win a on the yacht, you should have sufficient money left to enable you to generate income sufficient to cover operating costs. At least that goes in to my calculus. If I win 10 million in the lottery, and spend 1 million on a yacht that leaves me 9 million to invest which would generate substantial earnings. Even at 3% it would generate about 2.7 million to cover costs, and at 7% it would generate 6.3 million. But, since I will never win the lottery, It is just a fantasy.

  • @clifbradley
    @clifbradley Жыл бұрын

    If you win the lottery for quite a few hundred million(after taxes), or even a hundred million and invest it In a high interest savings account or some other stable form investment making say 1 to 3%, that is 1 to 3 million per year. Thus a stable income of money. Buying a yacht for 25 million and using the laughable but somewhat accepted 10% rule means you need 2.5 million per year and that you are bringing in $750,000 (assuming you used 25 million for the purchase of the yacht and a 1% return. A 3% return generates $2,250,000 per year) both of these numbers greatly offset the running costs. Obviously a person with that much wealth would be subjected to taxes and need a home if not living on the yacht, and cars....lots and lots of cars. But for me, it's a yacht. A 125 or 145' Bering. Which is 13 or 23 million. Then a shadow vessel and my yacht to carry a submarine, 2 RIBS. 3-4 Sea Doos, towing a Boston Whaler 42' and also 2 ATV's. This would be the research vessel too. Functional luxury. I was thinking about the Arksen 85, a Damen or maybe a custom Bering 85 or 92. Although the new Damen SeaXplorers look like just one could do the job so...(Sorry Alexei)... As I circumnavigate the globe with my family, we would take in various scientists in the shadow boat. 3 cabins, 7-8 guests and 4 crew. 6-12 family on my big boat with 7-10 crew. That's my dream. Would love to hear other people's.

    Why should we be correcting the Queen's (or King's) English for the Yanks?! If they want to say "homely" means ugly or plain, that's THEIR business. Why should the rest of the English-speaking world have to adapt because the Yanks feel different?!

    Please let's stick with the queen's English and use the language in the proper sense. Let's not change the way we speak and use words because of 'some local dialects'. Lets face it there is a huge difference between English and American and Homely is just one of them. Written with HUMOUR in mind (yes with OU) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Almost all British boat presenters use the word " homely", while I find this somewhat irritating, I know what they mean. I can translate English to English very well. ))) Nick on Aquaholics catches himself very often when using the word homely. Also, heads instead of head. Not really a big deal.

    Magnificent boats indeed, but, who in the world got money to buy one of these ??? And, what a hack to do with one ? Just to play big ? (look .... what a bog toy i.ve got !!!) .... No offense please, we are on planet Earth, also we are (most of us ... i suppose), regular people. What for to spend a huge amount of money (you need three lifes to save them). The only way to afford such a vessel is winning lottery. Yes, Gates, Bezos, Musk and a few others, for sure they have money to buy one. Goodluck my friend to sale one of these ! RESPECT & CONSIDERATION for what you do !! Keep em coming and i will be here to watch & like.

    Why do all Lurssen yachts look exactly the same? Anyhoo...with a crew of 96, you've got crew cooking and looking after the crew. Not exactly smart. economics.
