GFX 50S in 2022 / Mitakon 65mm f/1.4 & 45mm f/2.8

The GFX 50S was released in Jan of 2017, is it still worth it in 2022? It is a digital "medium format" camera (which is larger than full frame by quite a bit. This is not a review, just some thoughts that I have had sine using it for about 4 months now.

    What a great overview, thank you! This is the lens I would buy a GFX body for - this and the TTArtisan 90 f1.25. Beautiful images, gorgeous character, heavy, yes, but I usually run a 4.5+ kg ciné rig handheld, so it's all relative 😉 The focus throw looks like 180 degrees which seems a good compromise. Most of my manual ciné glass is around 300 degrees, which I've got used to for taking stills too, so if anything 180's a bit short ha ha. Love the flares and colour rendition from this, time to start saving!

    That’s great, I adapt FD lenses to mine quite often and they are okay, not as sharp as I’d like. The 50R is really cool, I love the rangefinder and if I wouldn’t have got such a good deal on this one I would have got the 50R. Thanks for watching

    I took my new-to-me 50R out with the 45 f2.8 out in California at mid-day and same same re: being too bright. I had it set to MS + ES and have now changed it to just MS. The rolling shutter is awful on it. So ND filters moving forwards. In the meantime, seeing it too bright will force me to just stop down rather than let the ES ruin half the shots

    JFYI, the AF on the 50Sll is about the same as on the 50s. The only difference is the IBIS. If you need IBIS, then the 50Sll is the one. However, I use a battery grip for portrait mode as that is where I reside in most of my fashion/beauty shoots, which is really convenient. I also use the tilt viewer accessory occasionally and neither is available on the 50sll or the 100s.

    Hi, so I do have a question, and it is basically what does the sensor offer over a full frame. So I am a new hobbyist and not trying to be smart or anything. I feel a big pull to these Fujifilm medium format cameras but I think it is just because what I imagine over what might be fact. Other people on KZread videos say that the sense size isn't much bigger and compares photos of these cropped medium format against flagship full frame sensors and I don't think I can see a difference. However, the film medium format that I saw on one KZread channel blew me away. Do you think that the sensor in this camera is good because of the tech that has gone into it, or do you think it is just the larger sensor that makes the photos better?

  • @hunterhart1

    @hunterhart1

    Жыл бұрын

    I use crop sensor fujifilm cameras as well and I use them beside each other at weddings. I always tell people the sensor size doesn’t really matter unless you’re trying to achieve something specific. In my opinion it looks good in lower light situations paired with the correct lens. It also has a distinct look that’s very obvious to me but for a client (if they’re not editorial or high fashion) they wouldn’t know the difference. As far as full frame goes, you have much more options out there. I use an A7iii and if you put a 50mm 1.2 on it you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference after the edit (unless you zoomed in because the image quality is tough to beat on any medium format). Another thing is this particular camera is slow, which doesn’t bother me because I wanted to replace my medium format film camera with it. I just put out another video with just a lens review on this camera if you’d like to watch it. I also talk a lot about the XT4 with various lenses on some other videos (this is my work horse camera I’d suggest looking into) Bottom line, what do you need out of a camera? More detail in highlights and shadows with a shallower depth of field (medium format) or something quick, responsive, accurate and versatile (crop sensor or full frame). I use an XT4 for the most part and it’s amazing but it’s crop sensor and it works great for most situations.

    @@hunterhart1 Hi thank you. I have the Nikon d700 and I am very happy with it. I saw a look that I love with a medium format film camera. I think what I was looking at was: "More detail in highlights and shadows ." Or maybe it wasn't. The way I would describe it, is more steps in colour. More graduations UP to the colour becoming stronger and more graduations DOWN as the colour became more faint. Does that make sense? And it isn't shallow depth of field I like but more clarity and insight. I think what I want to photograph is people. Environmental portraits, travel portraits. I am not looking to buy a camera but to try to understand what I want. Between here and there, my love for learning photography will burn. I need education, and that is where I will spend all my money but I don't want to start that education before knowing where I want to end up.

    About the “warm’ness” of the Mitakon, why doesn’t the cameras auto white balance cancel that out? I think I might not understand how auto white balance works, or maybe you use manual WB? I’m just trying to wrap my head around how it works. Your photos are amazing by the way! Love how you edit them too!

    Thanks for watching. I actually use manual WB so it’s my warmth that I choose I believe. But honestly the lens itself has warmer tones to it. I’d say fujifilm lenses are more “life like” I prefer the warm tones though.

    I am a wedding photographer, I use it at weddings as a second camera. You would struggle with low light AF in my opinion for wedding receptions. But as far as day time goes, it works great. I hope they come out with a phase detection 50S or 50R camera eventually. The 100S has phase detection, idk why they didn’t bring that to the 50Sii. So yes you could but it would be tough in some situations. I shoot most of my portraits with this camera at weddings and they’re phenomenal.

    @@xrisovalantissimeonidis831 I wish I could make that decision for you but that’s hard. But to be completely honest, the best quality photos I’ve ever taken in over a decade have been with the GFX. However, lens options are still short and they don’t have many fast lenses as of now which is a bummer. I have the 45mm 2.8 and it’s the most sharp lens with so much detail and handles highlights and shadows unlike anything I’ve witnessed. In my opinion, the R6 isn’t far off from the R5 other than a few details which I’m sure you’re aware of. Having a unique camera like the GFX could allow you to step into a different realm of photography, or so that’s what happened to me. I could send you some RAW photos if you’d like to mess around with them.
