GFS600 - PAIR valve and vacuum issue troubleshooting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Trying to figure out what is causing the issues with this bike. I took a look at the PAIR valve and potentially removing it. I've also found a few more trouble spots and variables that may have put me closer from my goal of getting this bike running correctly.

Thanks for picking g me up heheh. I am not dealing with 4 carbs but been trying to figure pair and vacuumed yet.point to point it dose not provide performance to some yet you stated it's to add clean air to exhaust for better emission made sense. Yet the read valve only opens on second down stroke so long story short ya need valve clearances ajustment to be different then regular setting. have to be changed or boom boom in cylinders will cause back squish to be rong condition or a running lean condition .hehehe I'm gonna finish video where I left off but if petcoc vacume is controlled without vacuum and ran right to carb you will have to put manual open and close valve gas line to keep gas from flooding carb and if petcock is hooked to head manifold to open and close it can flood cylinder I got ya tho man and again thanks for picking me up lol.

Hey Anthony--thanks for the comments. I've actually gotten the bike running very well; however, it's still got a few issues. Mainly, it takes way too long to come up to temperature from 35°F. About 10 minutes. This should be able to be tuned out to an extent with the fuel/air screws. Unfortunately, the jet needle is shim adjustable--not clip adjustable--so I'm only able to troubleshoot by going leaner. The major changes have been cutting all new vacuum lines, fuel lines, new air filter, and (expensive...) new air inlet boots + O-rings. I have not had any further issues with the vacuum petcock leaking nor fuel slipping passed the bowls and into the crankcase. In regards to the PAIR: It's currently configured as it should. However, once I get the bike running perfect, I will try to disable it again because it's 10 pounds of nonsense. Holeshot actually makes a delete kit that covers the PAIR exhaust air inlets, and there are a bunch of guides on how to do it. None of these guides mention requiring modifying the exhaust valve clearances--but I could see them potentially getting tighter since you're theoretically removing some cooling air. The problem is, the exhaust air from the engine is high pressure combustion fumes and the PAIR clean air is ambient from the air filter. I can't imagine much of it even makes it's way into the system. Lastly, removing the PAIR gives *substantially* easier access to the spark plugs and valves. You basically can't get to spark plug #3 without removing the entire thing. 1-4 are all accessible. Good luck on the thumper you're working on!

Sorry had to add something there should be a vacume hose ither closed or its closed and needs to be open your only running off of half the cylinders. Mabey that will guide ya to issue .I'm only dealing with 1 carburater heheh gee your dealing with 4.so all that said I figure ya figured it.... I will look and see if you have more videos or follow up video but I still will be trying to figure the molina of carburater and all the direction and function of pair vacuume and or straight fuel fed carburater without fuel injunction lol.

Hello from Greece i am mechanic and i do now a service on a suzuki bandit s 650 wich has this valve. The motorcycle has only a KN air filter and after market exhaust, after we put the KN on the bike the back starts to not run normaly at 4.500-5.500 RPM.There is a posibity to do this problem cause of this valve thank you very much keep doing great jobs!! And i want you to tell me if the map mass air sensor can do this problem, you know i put the aftermarket air filter on and i thought that now more air go through the intake the map mass air sensor read this and modifies the air/fuel ratio with the 02 sensor ofc.Sorry for my English and again keep doing great jobs, again hello for Greece to everyone!!

Hello Gate! Did the bike have problems before you switched the air filter to a KN? Have you tried switching back to the previous air filter to see if the problem goes away? If it's a KN filter... is it a filter that requires oiling? Perhaps you need to oil the filter because it's getting too much flow? I do not think that the PAIR is causing you the issues unless it's failed open. But if it failed open, you would probably see issues in a much wider range than 4,500-5,500rpm. Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of experience with fuel-injected motorcycles, so I do not think I can help you with the mass air flow sensor or engine mapping. I have never played around with those components before, so I would only be guessing. I wish I could be more help. I hope you are able to get it figured out. I would try switching back to a different air filter to see how the behavior changes. Your English is fine--it's definitely a lot better than my Greek!

Looks like someone put way too much oil into engine, so breather threw it out through the breather pipe to the airbox I guess.

Oh yea that was gravity that put too much fluid into it, this bike had a petcock + float valve failure, so the crankcase filled with fuel before I realized it and resolved that issue. It's been a while since I've considered what I was troubleshooting in this video... Whatever--I removed the PAIR and if nothing else, it makes accessing things with the tank removed substantially easier. Spark Plug #3 is buried under the PAIR if you don't delete it.

Thanks for this Matt, I have an early 1996 bandit 600 and notice I don't have PAIR, was it on all bikes or did some come without? Bike had 2K miles and stock when purchased. Also having starting problems, cranks and there is spark but no firing wondering if its worthwhile to switch out vacuum petcock

I do not believe you have a PAIR system on the MK1 bandit 600 unless your bike is a California E33 model. Looking at the parts fiches on Partzilla, the 2002 (MK2) bandit has it under the category "Second Air" www.partzilla.com/catalog/suzuki/motorcycle/2002/bandit-gsf600s/second-air The 1996 only has E33 "Second Air" in addition to an evap canister. I'm pretty certain there's no PAIR system on your bike. If you're wondering about whether it's a petcock issue, you could remove the fuel tank and try running off an auxiliary tank. If the problems disappear on starting--you may have found your culprit.

I removed the pairs unit, when a cap is installed on the carb port there’s tons of popping in the exhaust. When removed it stops popping. Any ideas to get this popping at idle to stop?

Do you have the airbox plugged off as well? If not, you're bypassing the air filter and dumping a lot more air in and leaning out the mixture.

Sure--shoot me an email at colddevil01@yahoo.com . Just let me know when you do since I don't check that one too often. I did get an instagram at MattTriesToDoThings as well. I kind of suck at using it though. But that's an option as well.
