Everywhere I’ve traveled, in all my years, I’ve learned from Dave Olson more about music biz than any others before or after him. “Yi would you listen to this crap,” Will you please be quiet! “It’s so stimulating being your head.” 😴

Yes. It's only a membership that you are not obligated to join to begin with. But with you're a working songwriter with material circulating, you should be a member of at least one of them. If you're an artist you should also joing SoundExchange as the artist and copyright owner. [if you own such]

Is it possible to change from BMI to ASCAP? Are there situations that make room for that?

depends i suppose.... Some Producers get a percentage of a CD sale or an upfront fee or both. There really is no body to protect or organize music producers unfortunately.

I just don’t understand why if I sold a unit of 20$ I get only paid 2$ shouldn’t it be close to 20$?

$20 gets split by many people. The label gets a big chunk, unless if you are the label. Then you have producers who get paid. In some cases you have silent partners who get a piece of your action. They are the ones in the way back who fund your project and get paid first before you even see your $2. The music business is not all fun when it comes down to the money being split. That's why you should always read your contract or have your lawyer read it and break it down for you (in which you have to pay also) before you even sign it. And don't forget if you have a manager, they get a piece of your $2. By the time it's all said and done, you might end up with way less than $2 (more like 50 cents if you're lucky).

OK, what if I'm only a featured artist ? Let's say I'm singing a song with Madonna on her album, but I didn't write it. What's my share?

if you're a featured artist, but not a songwriter, then you're only in title to royalty as a feature artist if the song is a hit such as being played on the radio or youtube or steaming. But if it a song on the album, than you get paid for the verse you did, that it. after that, you can do god knows with the verse.
