Getting Married After 4 Months! | Big Fat Gypsy Weddings | FULL EPISODE | OMG

Ойын-сауық

Entering the world of 21st Century gypsy and traveller weddings, where ancient traditions meet modern fashions in an ostentatious culture clash, this film follows four gypsy and traveller families on their wedding day.
Considered ‘on the shelf’ at 20, in gypsy and traveller communities many girls get married soon after their 16th birthday with the support of their family.
The weddings are visual spectacles: brides and their families compete to have the most flamboyant dresses; girls parade into church in enormous dresses that sometimes weigh more than the bride herself.
Although the women look sexually provocative there is a tradition of premarital chastity that is increasingly unusual in Britain today.

Amen.💔 There is much that I respect & appreciate about Traveller & Romany cultures. However, SA, (& other) violence, expectations of marriage & Motherhood as _CHILDREN,_ real obstacles to leaving unhappy &/or abusive marriages, no choices BUT marriage, Motherhood, & homemaking for girls-- (I adored being a wife & Mother, & prioritizing my child & family, this time of my life was my greatest Purpose, Calling, Blessing, & Joy, but that was _MY CHOICE,_ after an education, profession, & & adventures) --& lack of education, for the girls & boys, & the attitude that girls are PROPERTY--first of their Fathers & then their husbands, these things I find sad, & very, very disturbing, unjust, & infuriating. The focus on family, & the close-knit communities, & Spirituality are lovely. There is much to respect, admire, & appreciate about Traveller & Romany cultures, & I certainly give them due respect.

Sexualizing girls from the time they're born, dressing them up like "prostitutes" at 10 years old, and saying sexual harassment = attraction, but meanwhile prohibiting premarital sex and preventing them from going out or choosing their spouses is NOT high morals. I don’t mind traditional roles (if both are happy) and there is mutual respect, love and commitment. It’s the foundation on which all else is built. I also think they’re too young to understand this level of dedication to each other.

I admit I was very astounded when I saw that girls get married at such a young age and the boys grabbing the girls. I won't speak badly of something I don't know, I can always voice my opinion, that I think it can be terrifying to just get grabbed and dragged away by a random boy/stranger (in case you don't know them, I presume you don't all know eachother?) And of course missing out on a lot of experiences, one get as you get older than 16. And I admit, I sometimes wonder if the girls miss school?... As far as I have learned from the show, there are a few girls who choose not to get married and 'break the cycle' for a lack of better words. However, I do want to know if they choose to do that, "breaking the cycle", do the girls get shunned? Or are there groups of travelers who respect their decision? I am honestly curious. No judgement on this side, just curiousity. Plus this is an old show, so things might have changed over the last +-10 years. I hope that me asking you these questions and the things I said, doesn't hurt your feelings. :)

@@rissamunrose3658 well yes we all know each other and it’s not that aggressive and they definitely aren’t getting married at 16. only in rare cases and without the parents knowledge of knowledge of anyone really. and i know lots of young women who have either left abusive relationships or chose not to get married. they aren’t shunned some just aren’t meant for married life. as for missing school it does happen yes but only because we tend to do a lot of moving around. the girls are extremely well educated just not in the traditional sense. like by a school curriculum. and u don’t miss out on any experiences in my opinion. we usually get married at 24-26 but some get married much later if they find the right person. and i want to reiterate that grabbing is no where near getting pulled and dragged away. grabbing is something that doesn’t usually happen anymore it is 2022 and we believe it’s an outdated custom. but when it did a boy would pull their car up along side a girl and say “ur grabbed” and she would get in. then u just chat. but that was ten years ago. honestly shocks me that ppl believe the stuff in this show. it’s entertaining to watch but no where. near accurate

They don’t think about that when they are doing it but I would rather have normal white skin then look 50 when I’m 30. If you see josie now she is still in her 20’s but has really bad eye wrinkles again from overusing sun beds etc. their diet is also poor. Drinking red bull all day, eating unhealthy foods etc. these are certainly not traditional travellers no matter what they may say. They have made their own traditions. I’m certain travellers from 50 years go would look down on these girls as scandalous and shameful for the way they behave and the clothes they wear.

My family are Romani/English travellers. (Family’s from both sides married into each-other.) My family are extremely old fashioned and very into their spirituality like tarot cards, rune stones, crystals, fortune telling and witchcraft. I feel sometimes ashamed to tell people where my family are from because they then jump to conclusions and assume we are like what you see on TV. When that really isn’t the case! My family used to live on a site until early 2000s and then move into houses, last person to live on our site was my grandad who died in 2018. Now my cousin and her baby have moved into a shalley there also with a distant relative in a caravan to keep it ours, rest of the plot is rented out to people. We would own horses and dogs back in the day, As usual. But never would women wear the kinds of things you see in these modern day “travellers”. Our clothing was more bohemian with bangles, head scarfs and beautiful patterned dresses that were not showing cleavage and belly’s and under bum. I do feel our culture has been corrupted in a way by this new modern day aesthetic of what a traveler should be. And the beautiful vardos (wagons) we would own which had beautiful patterns and gold outlining with those beautiful painted shutters for the windows. Its such a shame to hardly see them around anymore.. 😔 Please do not think we are all like what is being portrayed on tv! 🙏🏻

They raise their men to be wife beaters and criminals and their women to be servants and child raisers. Very sad. This isn’t what most traditional travellers are about at all from what I’ve seen. Some are like this but have long forgotten the real traditions. Many old time gypsys were good hardworking people with high morals and high standards of home keeping. Not like these scallys who steal and lie and rip people off, grab and abuse women, and the women who dress like prostetutes and beat up pregnant women. Shameful to say the least.

In the US, I've seen them walk through a grocery store opening packages and eating, then putting them back. Or carrying around fruit eating it without paying for it. Once couple paid for a candy bar but left a trail of open packages behind. My best friend in junior high was a gypsy. He told me we couldn't date because he'd been betrothed at birth to a girl in our class. They really did get married after graduation. His mother was a palm reader. She's had a sign out front of a building for over 30 years. His father was a roofer. He was too at 14. He spread tar on roofs. I can't vouch for their honesty, but some would show up at people's driveways, ask for money in advance to resurface the drive, then never return. Thievery and trickery has been the way of the gypsy's I've known personally.

A world where 15 year olds can dress very mature and possibly get kidnapped by boys/men yet has to save sex for marriage and live by traditional gender rules? I’m so confused yet so curious. @@ttintagel It’s actually possible for young girls to fantasize a life like that. If they’re expecting this perfect prince charming that will give to your needs regardless of his position in the marriage, they’d totally expect the least expected. The idea that if he loves you enough, him taking charge wouldn’t be an issue for her. That is possible and some people are fine with the way they live, I just don’t think these girls would like it with the way they are.

The weddings that these people throw are the true definition of “valuing the wedding more than the marriage.” They spend loads of money on these trashy, tacky weddings and wedding dresses and put so much thought and effort into the wedding only for most of these couples to divorce within five years of marriage. Sad and ridiculous. Maybe more of their thoughts, time, and other resources should go towards the actual marriage and then the marriages might have a better chance of lasting. Just a thought.
