Excellent video full of pertinent information. I collect GP’s as well (I only have 3) and I agree with your assessment. Beautiful yet unappreciated horological gems! Congrats on your acquisition.

Hello Bruce, nice pickup. GPs are hidden jewels and because they are not one of the most popular people disregard them. However, a couple of things. Is not caliber 40, it should be caliber 42. Caliber 40 for GP was earlier and had a subseconds at 6. No date. Handwound. Not gyromatic. Gyromatic calibers 32, then 32A the famous 662 pieces, and then replaced by 42. In the movement you can see the number, it starts with 42. The cushion case is called the suspense case, most should have the ref. 9077 making a suspense case, which will be found between the lugs at 6. And yes, it was GP’s take on the antimagnetic watch like Milhaud, railmaster, ingenieur, JLC geophysic. Etc. It is a great watch, mine has date only, no day date. Is a cool watch that is not really popular. Beware of the dial “feet” wearing out after years of use. Vintage GPs seem to suffer from that as other Swiss vintage watches for that matter. Enjoy. There is also a cool JLC Master Quartz from the 70s/80s with a variation of GPs quarts movement, the only time JLC that I know, has a movement designed by another maker -GP. I also have a gyromatic cal 32, does not have 39 jewels like the rest, that’s how I know about the evolution of those.

The observatory competition was like a Formula 1 for watches and the movements submitted were specially prepared for the competition like a Formula 1 car and were not meant to be worn as regular watches as they were too fragile. GP and Seiko were the only brands that offered competition movements in regular production watches which proves how certain they were of the reliability of their "racing" movements 😊

Yeah, I think its a really fun combo. Practical and beautiful elements. I've been imagining what it would have looked like new from the factory lol wish the radial sunburst brushing would have kept over the years

That is indeed one of your coolest watches now. And I agree that the dial is the nicest part with that tapestry style and the observatory logo. I bet it'd look great on a chocolate brown strap too. GP is, as you know, one of the premier watch makers. Well done acquiring that one Bruce. Hmm, may have to start a hunt for one myself. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you and your family. John

Hey man I’ve been enjoying your vids.....what would be your recommendation for a white face dress watch under $300. I have a blue face cocktail time and thought about the white one but having the same watch seems kinda pointless idk

Jeremey King you can get a vintage automatic Timex Marlin for next to nothing and it has twice the class and sophistication of almost anything

Matt McLoughlin too small for me I have 7.75 inch wrist anything under 40 would probably be a no go. My presage cocktail time is a good size at 40.5

Jeremey King check out the Seiko SARY079, its a little more than your stated budget... but would be money well spent. Its basically a cocktail time but with a few added complications :) good luck on your search!

I think Seiko is king at this price. I think the new SARY089 has a really beautiful dial but its essentially the same watch as your blue cocktail. Outside Seiko the Tissot Visodate looks sharp to me
