I wouldn't be surprised, as, like his politics, it was extremely popular back then, similar to other bathroom related products like Brut 44 (Whatever happened to that that, our 'enry?) and Hai Karate. However, there may have been an alternative method to obtaining a shiny anvil-shaped barnet which I cannot recall - alas! the memory dulls with age. I am quite sure Mr. Foot didn't use any kind of hair product, but am happy to be corrected upon this and other matters.

'With the Common Market and EEC membership referendum looming that asked the electorate - Do you think the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community (the Common Market)?' Interesting to see. But on a point of accuracy - the question was whether Britain should stay in the European Economic Community. The EEC did not become the 'European Community' until 1993. In 2009 this then became the European Union.

@@johncoyle2304 Except they were told no such thing. The Treaty of Paris (1951) made it very clear the ECSC (which preceded the EEC) was more than just a Trade Agreement The Treaty of Rome (1957) made it very clear the EEC was more than just a Trade Agreement - it set up a Court, it set up a Parliament, set objectives for maintaining peace in Europe, set out to improve citizen's living and working conditions, reduce the economic and social differences between the EEC’s various regions, and lay the foundations of an "ever closer union among the peoples of Europe". A simple search on KZread will find numerous samples of TV debates, documentaries & interviews, throughout the 1960's and early 70's which covered issues of sovereignty & other constitutional/political consequences of Membership in depth. A 10 minute search of newspapers from the same period will demonstrate the extensive coverage of the THREE attempts by the UK to join the EEC, again covering issues way beyond Trade. Another simple search for Newsreels from companies like Pathe News & Movietone will throw up EEC news features covering non Trade issues which were shown in most cinemas up to the early 70's. Cinema audience figures between 1961 and 1970 were approx 3 billion bums on seats. Over 1 million people bought the 1967 & 1970 White Papers on the UK's legislative plans for joining the EU. Both discussed in huge detail the political, social and economic reasons for joining the EEC. Both are still available online for verification. Parliament spent 100's of hours over 18 years debating applications to join the EEC. A simple search of Hansard will demonstrate how wide of the mark, that Leaver myth is. Edward Heath in particular, on 28th October 1971 spoke at great length about political union, monetary union, sovereignty etc. as he had done many times previously. There were four General Elections between the UK's first and last application to join the EEC. Search out the manifestos..... Enoch Powell toured the country talking of his fears about joining the EEC and as we know, trade was not his biggest fear. Finally, the Government sent pamphlets to every household in the country before the 1975 Referendum, also available online, which made it clear the EEC was more than just about Trade. There were 15 years between the UK first preparing an application to join the EEC and the 1975 Referendum. Do you really think, no one in the UK noticed what was in the Treaty of Rome, or what was happening in Europe, or watched TV, or read the papers, or went to the cinema? I can provide links to verify every claim I've made above, but just for a taster, here's a pre-referendum debate between Michael Foot and Edward Heath called "A Question of Sovereignty". kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4efsLalqpTOgso.html It's a Leaver myth the electorate were told no more than the EEC was a Trade Agreement, easily disproved.

@@ThePkb22- I think it’s a myth they weren’t or were told and it’s being perpetuated here. The Europe debate has always been tightly controlled by the establishment. Powell says so in the video. Did you have the internet in 1971 through to 1975. The simple fact is that the whole thing was obscured and a perfect example of that was in the construction of the referendum question. As follows: “The Government has announced the results of the renegotiation of the United Kingdom's terms of membership of the European Community.” Do you think the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community ( *the Common Market* )? You will note that they included the phrase Common Market for the avoidance and removal of doubt to the voters what they were actually voting ON. It was emphasised for that reason to create the impression that is ALL it was. Powell , Foot, Benn, Shore talked of it fro me a Constitutional and Sovereignty element on the basis of the 1972 EC Act. This effectively neutered Parliament (as sovereign one as duly elected by it’s sovereign voters) as vast swathes of domestic legislation was now subject to Brussels. Specifically, trade, agricultural, transport, maritime policy which Benn stated repeatedly in the House that he nor Parliament could initiate, amend , or reject. That was the argument on that side. A Parliament that was subordinated to an outside authority. I do not see these as inconsistent considerations when discussing the 75 referendum. The question stated exactly what they wanted the voter to think they were voting ON. Which has been the problem with the EEC/EC/EU (which no voter voted for) . Even the proposed EU Constitutional Treaty rejected by the French & Dutch was repackaged as Lisbon . D’Estaing said as much . The EU is a triumph of ambition and hubris by EU and national politicians past there sell by date. Thank god we left.

You say "You will note that they included the phrase Common Market for the avoidance and removal of doubt to the voters what they were actually voting ON. It was emphasised for that reason to create the impression that is ALL it was." There were two much more obvious reasons for the use of the term "Common Market". a) It was the term that had become common parlance when referring to the EEC for at least a decade and a half. b) It was called the Common Market because remarkably, that's exactly what it was, a 'common market'. Common markets were and are a long-recognised economic construct, the first being agreed (with the UK's involvement) as far back as the 1860's. "A common market is a type of trade agreement in which member countries agree to remove tariffs and other trade barriers, and to harmonize regulations in order to promote the free movement of goods, services, and factors of production (such as labor and capital) among member countries." (www.tutor2u.net/economics/topics/common-markets) & "What is a Common Market? A common market, also known as a trade block, is a market that allows trade and exchange of labor or services between specific countries. It is the result of a regional or intergovernmental agreement that permits agreeing countries to trade with one another with little or no barriers to trade. Common external tariffs (CET) can be imposed on non-members of the market who want to import into the market." (thebusinessprofessor.com/en_US/global-international-law-relations/common-market-definition) Of additional interest is Britannica's summary of the political element of common markets: www.britannica.com/money/topic/economic-integration/Justifications-of-economic-integration Other recent examples of a common market include the Central American Common Market (CACM) & the South African Development Community (SADC). Both these definitions (and many others) refer to the key elements that differentiate a common market from a trade agreement - namely, the free movement of labour, goods services and capital'. These elements were all included in both the Treaty of Paris (1951) that set up the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the Treaty of Rome 1957) which established the ECSC's successor, the EEC. Consequently, the nature of the ECSC and EEC's 'common markets' were known for a full 22 years before we eventually joined and for example, were described openly as such in two White Papers (1967 & 1971) in great detail. Here's a copy of the 1971 Paper which discusses the Common Market and its implications in great detail: www.cvce.eu/en/obj/white_paper_presented_by_the_uk_government_to_the_uk_parliament_july_1971-en-8cf072cb-5a31-46f6-b04f-cb866be92f72.html "This effectively neutered Parliament (as sovereign one as duly elected by it’s sovereign voters) as vast swathes of domestic legislation was now subject to Brussels." Far from "neutering Parliament" The European Community Act (1972) was the instrument by which Parliament granted authority for EEC/EU laws to apply in the UK, by giving effect to the Treaty of Accession (1972). As a result, Parliament 'delegated' (as opposed to 'devolved') those competences agreed in the Treaty (and subsequent treaties) to the EEC. EEC/EU laws ONLY applied in the UK for as long as OUR Parliament agreed they should do so. In 2018 and 2019, Parliament withdrew that assent by way of the EU Withdrawal Acts and EU laws ceased to apply in the UK, with certain exceptions. That it was in Parliament's gift to both grant and withdraw the authority for EEC/EU laws to apply in the UK was a manifestation of Parliament's 'ultimate authority' in the UK. 'Ultimate authority' by definition, cannot be 'pooled' or 'shared'. It exists, or it doesn't. This is also known as 'Parliamentary sovereignty' and is held on behalf of the Crown. To summarise: If the UK had not been an independent sovereign nation throughout its membership of the EEC/EU it would not have had the legal authority (as in the case of the individual US and Australian States) to unilaterally give notice to the EU of its intention to leave "in accordance with its constitutional arrangements" and to do so. This is also confirmed both by the fact the EU has no legal authority to either eject nor prevent the exit of any Member State and by Vote Leave themselves on their web page 'Leave Looks Like': "We will repeal section 2 of the European Communities Act 1972. This is Parliament’s instruction to our courts to treat EU law as supreme." This also demonstrates the Leave narrative, 'the UK had to leave the EU to restore its sovereignty' was the overt lie upon which the whole Brexit argument was built. I'm happy to further verify anything above I haven't already. There are other misconceptions in your comments, but I suspect this is quite long enough.

Powell loved his country, but his allegiance to restorative nostalgia is breathtaking. Here is an old man who can't let go of his memories of the colonial giant that was England. The foolish folks that support this philosophy today are only delaying the inevitable.

What you call restorative nostalgia I call conservatism, there is nothing wrong with wanting to keep things the way they are, but it's too late for that rhetoric there is nothing to conserve, the left have ruined the country and a socialist labour government are on the way to finish the job

I think the intention behind it was ignored, and as a result we have what we have now. Corrupt politicians who care more about their own pocket than their country. Had they followed through with the intentions of the plan we wouldn't be where we are now. They were given direction, but chose a different, off the record, path.
