Enoch was a prophet as well as an intellectual. Miller raises a good point about difference in appearance being the fear factor, yet one simply has to look at the news any day of the week for the last 50 years and you can see it's not appearance, but behaviour.

I really enjoy watching these Dick Cavett interviews, I know nothing about him being a Brit but he had some great guests. This interview between two intellectuals is fascinating, possibly because we no longer see these on TV anymore, which is a shame.

He was a qualified medical doctor who specialised in Neurology, was an esteemed opera and theatre director and was one of the four members of Beyond the Fringe, which I admired greatly. He wasn't qualified however, in my opinion, to debate with Enoch Powell on such a divisive and potentially explosive issue.

By 'vile' do you mean he dared to discuss the concept of race and ethnicity? if so, he is only vile to you. To others simply a man who discussed such things. You need to do more than just throw mud.

I migrated away in '87 hoping for a better life for my children. I cannot, therefore, criticise strongly ppl migrating to Britain with exactly the same goals. The few times I've been back - well, it's certainly changed significantly and demograhics of some cities were just as Powell predicted. The inclement weather was the same though.

He did have a reputation too after his resignation with Thorneycroft over the Macmillan budget. Probably right on that too.

I seem to remember that in one of Enoch's speeches he quoted that as many as 50.000 immigrants a year might come to the UK, changing the face of our culture irrevocably. If only he knew then about the MILLIONS that would actually come! In London, Slough, Luton, Bradford, Rotherham etc etc the indigenous Brit is an ethnic minority.

I'm not sure Spain would be so welcoming if all those people of colour in their little rubber boats headed South instead of West...in fact why don't they, one asks oneself? Could it be that we have a more laissez faire attitude to ILLEGAL immigrants (and their families that follow them in short order!)? By making this 'older people create conflict' metaphor, Miller affirms Enoch's view that societal cohesion is indeed a problem Miller effectively argued against himself. If old people create generational conflict on our society, then why would we want to stress society further by adding immigrants?

Indeed, similar to the argument that Peter Hitchens has made on Question Time (I'm paraphrasing): "Yes, but if we know that London itself is overpopulated and has caused housing prices in London to be completely unaffordable to all but the superwealthy, and why there is a housing shortage in the nation at large, why should we exacerbate the problem by importing more and more immigrants?" As Enoch Powell said in this interview, one is inevitable and one isn't.

The point is that, if the British gov't makes the policy that affects or even determines average housing prices, they have an intrinsic duty to do what's best for the people they represent, not what's best for hundreds of thousands of non-citizens who have neither voted nor paid a cent in taxes upon their arrival in the country.
