I guess I got lucky because I bought my fuel cell used. When I went to install it I noticed that the black foam was starting to fall apart. Glad You caught it in time. 😎👍

My Pinto Stock Car has a fuel cell. One year we parked it with premium fuel in it instead of race gas. In 2 months the foam half dissolved and plugged up the entire fuel system. After that we only used 110 octane race fuel. It has had the same tank of race fuel for about 12 years now and the foam was still good until I ran it on premium again. That pump gas is caustic!

I was just reading reviews on foam, and alot of people say don't use any foam. I know gasser Dave had same issue as you with clogging fuel system. This foam I pulled out was already breaking down in my hand with zero fuel exposure. Oh and the Phil membership badge looks great on you bud

Man that's crazy they would put the foam in there if it falls apart with gas! Good to have good friend to look at for you! Fuel cell is spotless now! So should just just keep it 3/4 to get it from slashing around? Catch you next time BW! 👍

Hey Brian.. glad you removed it. I was told by another friend that after awhile the cell material breaks down so I bought new foam from JEGS to replace my original foam before it started to break down (I thought). The new Foam material comes in bricks, that you order according to your tank’s dimensions. When I opened it up to replace the original foam thats when I found out the all the original foam had already broken down and had gotten all into my Fram canister Gas filter and also into the electric fuel pump (it was probably just about to burn up). I was lucky that I also had another fuel filter but the carbs and I caught it before I got to the carbs!!!!! I of course replaced all the fuel filters and the electric fuel pump. I removed all the original foam. strained the gas (had a full tank (of course)), through a bunch of layers of cheese cloth. Dried the tank, and vacuumed it out, and never added the new foam and returned it!!! I never had had an issue with fuel sloshing in the tank causing any starvation issues. The original 55, 56, 57 tanks work well and the didn’t have any sloshing foam in them. Anyways great job on getting rid of the foam and never look back. Lol

I think it has alot to do with the type of fuel your running too, just from comments Turlo and Mr B Real had no issues running race fuel, but when switching to regular gas the foam breaks down

There is a link to the tank in video description, and if you click on it and read the whole thing, there is one line that says, check foam regularly for deterioration. 😆 🤣 I checked before it had any fuel in it ever and decided yep gotta go!

Dont forget to check the fuel level senders float - i saw a video where that broke down too and kept contaminating the fuel

If you bought it new, leave the foam in it. If the foam is old, sure replace it with new foam. There are other things you can put in there to slow the slosh. I've even heard of sneaking sealed oil containers in it. And run some good filters. But I think you'd be better off with some kind of anti-slosh something working in there. Even if the car is not going side to side, it still is going to slosh front to back.

We’ve had similar issues with our ATL cell. I believe it’s because of the ethanol content commonly found at the pump now. We changed the foam, and has since used clear gas and tried to keep a low fuel amount during the off season.

  • @bwsgarage

Yea, that seems to be the common thing, the cheaper fuel breaks it down.

This is an apples and oranges type comparison of information. I ran a real ATL fuel cell in two different roundy round cars for 12 years without issues. Running leaded race fuel. I sold the car complete and the new owner decided to run it on pump gas with an octane booster. Dumbass move it took him 4 weekends of racing figure out the problem. but that stuff you pulled out looked like packaging material for electronics

  • @bwsgarage

I hear ya Grady, it was definitely a cheap knock off of the proper material. Andy Turlo said the same thing, type of fuel makes a big difference too.

People not realizing these are supposed to be replaced every season/year. If your foam is breaking down from standard pump gas, race gas or e85 you’re buying off brand foam 🤣
