I know I'm late, but I still gotta share! The reason the stonefish's mouth moves like that is because it's actually an ambush hunter, meaning it doesn't actively pursue its prey. Rather, it waits until something swims by, and springs it's mouth parts towards it. Incidentally, despite being incredibly venomous, its venom is solely for defense.

@@billysbigworld6166 "what animals would try to eat it" lots of fish around the reef love these things. big jacks, sharks, rays, barracuda... the spines are for when something tries to munch it down, the venomous spines stick in the roof of their mouths and they immediately spit the things out. However, many predators have learned how to either tear them apart first, like snappers and barracuda, or break off the spines, or they have become immune to the venom entirely.
You're so brave I dont think I could eat a stone fish but I do enjoy watching these videos and I like that you eat all the edible parts of each fish it's more respectful than wasting what you've caught and worked so hard to prepare. I'm from the UK and watching this makes me realise how little fishes we have here in the super market bet if I came to Asia I'd just walk around in complete culture shock, and eat everything.

he did it on purpose. you can easily cut the dorsal spines out either by laying them down flat against the spine with one hand, while cutting from the head instead of the tail, or else just taking pliers and ripping them out one at a time. I was kinda rolling my eyes watching him do it from the tail first instead.

Stonefish are no joke, my mom nearly stepped on one in Puerto Rico years ago when we lived there. Thankfully she happened to step around it rather than on it. We only realized how close of a call it was because she happened to point out something strange in the water next to her feet, and a person near her was able to recognize what it was. There were lots of people in the water barefoot too, someone could’ve been seriously hurt or even die that day. 😨
