When I got this watch, it was running well and I really wanted to wear it. But the bracelet, case and crystal had seen better days. In this video I show how to remove the movement to get a deep clean and polish on all the exterior parts, which is a great lesson for anyone wanting to increase the value of a watch they are selling, or make watches in their collection look amazing.

It looks fantastic, but doesn't polishing a watch devalue it as collectors want originality? I don't know about Bulobe but I know Rolex folk like an original watch

@adamoneale4396 - You raised a great question! I've seen countless videos where watch resellers complain about $10,000+ Rolexes where someone has polished the case. The same goes for vintage watches that are not 'all original' with a replaced crystal, bezel, etc. That's not my world, and at this point I'm not buying watches to resell - I want to wear them and enjoy them. I'd love to learn more about when to polish and when to leave things original. What are your thoughts?

@@WatchWithMike to be honest, I don't resell watches myself, I buy them to wear too. I would say, if you're wearing it, do what makes you happy. If you like a shiny case, have a shiny case! :)

As I see it, there is quite a difference in polishing a watch with a machine, or giving it a light buff to make it shine. For me, the value raises with the latter. I mean, who does not want a shiny clean looking vintage watch. Your Bulova is stunning!

Thank you Mike for your videos. I am taking my initial steps in vintage watch repair mainly for sentimental reasons with my parent´s heirlooms. You receive an A+ in production, narration, and wit! I have seen several other enthusiasts however they do not match your realistic take on watch repair nor personality.

So this is the watch from the short! I think it came out great. I guess you could expect that level of dirt from those flexi bands. They don't seem very hygienic but it cleaned up nicely! That movement holder with the gasket seems like a method to make sure that there is enough pressure on that seal to not leak and that's probably why it deformed. The dial is rather pretty! A separate ring on the caseback? Bulova really did do it their way haha! Back scratching tool indeed lol.

Yes, yes and yes! Bulova really seem to be pushing the innovation right around the time that this watch was made. They seem to go all out when it came to making the case watertight… With the exception of the crown! I have yet to see a vintage dress watch from that era with a screw down crown, but that would be an interesting twist. Get it? 😂 P.S. did you catch the Sinatra lyrics on the case back? New York, New York!

Thanks for another terrific video. The watch really cleaned up well, which is not surprising in light of how high quality it is (between the number of adjustments and the 23 jewel count). Nice find.

Thanks for this, Mike. Nice camera work. The back ring design is like Vostoks - more water pressure forces the back tighter against the gasket. But you wouldn’t want to dunk it without a screw down crown. When do we get to see the service? 😉

Lol, not the first request to see the movement serviced! And I'm making excuses! I have so many open watch projects right now on the bench that I need to finish some before disassembling this one into little pieces. My intention here was to show that if you purchase a vintage watch that is running well, it is easy to take it apart to thoroughly detail the case. I love a good deep cleaning! 😁

Im a bit upset you didnt take it further and serviced it fully. This way its just got a top wax and i would be terribly upset were i to purchase a watch for top mark price . When i realety i get a watch that need service. Not saying you would do that but there is defenetley more then plenty people out there that are ruthless enth to sell you a polished turd for the gold bar it is not. Please find it within your self the realy take apart the movment to fully service it. By the looks of it you have all the tools needed.

Oh, this watch is definitely going to be serviced! I have so many open watches on my bench that I need to close up those projects before digging into a new one. But I wanted people to see that if you purchase a vintage watch and it is already running well, that anybody can take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning with some very basic tools and supplies. Thanks for your words of encouragement! 😁
