Watching 1.5 years later and loving this lesson, making learning the piano fun. A good way to end after practicing those BORING scales

First of all; thank you Fraser (and Mrs G) for continuing to provide us with something fun to watch during these difficult times. I was taught piano during my early teens and my parents bought me an upright piano which I still play at home occasionally. A while back I was introduced to the church organ and I'm pleased to be friends with the owner of the only Cinema Organ in Wales. I am in awe at the 'octopus' skills of an organist and my question is: What does an Organist do with their feet when playing the piano?

What fun! Wunderbar Fraser! Whatever kind of piano that is it is perfect for Boogie Woogie. Those hammers must be hard as wood to make that sound. Yes, I miss the organ, but in these times some fun at the piano is needed.

This is so good! It’s a pity we have to all be driven to stay at home in order to get to gear more of your wonderful boogie-woogie. This is one of the best tutorials on playing boogie-woogie I’ve seen in a while and with your “signature” relaxed presentation style it’s really enjoyable.

It's always best when you can learn and have fun at the same time. Merci bien, Fraser. 👍 PS: I especially liked the Karlheinz Stockhausen story. It has inspired me to "re-discover" his wild music (which I haven't heard since my undergrad music history courses).

I remember the day my mother learned to play boogie woogie. It was shortly after WWII and we were staying at her sister's house. All us kids went to school and my aunt did too because she was a teacher. My father had gone to work. When came in that afternoon my aunt asked my mother what she did and mother sat down and played a boogie. Her piano teacher had been a cousin who lived with them so my mother played classical music from memory if it was a favorite piece. She also played by ear when she liked something. I don't play so I figure it would take me a few weeks to do just the blues. I have sung enough to be able get that down sort of. I enjoyed your playing.

It's interesting an original Irmler as I'm used to seeing the Blüthner ones. It's actually nice to hear boogie woogie. We often get concert pianists in our shop, yet strangely none ever play boogie woogie. Loved the video.

I tried also the german version. But here in my opinion its from 16:25 more challenging, as you vary between c c6, f7 and g7.It sounds even better :-)

Yes Boss! I do all vids in English and German (it’s my only chance to speak English these days after 20 years living here!) - mainly Organ stuff, but a bit of boogie and stride on piano to keep the technique up! I’ll be back in the uk one of these days - I’m sure we could sort something out!

Fraser, thanks for the reply, I would dare go near an organ for fear of total confusion, but loving the boogie woogie.

I don't play any keyboard instrument, and my attempts at learning music theory only leave me baffled. But all that actually made a bit of sense to me. I may have actually learned a bit! Fascinating! And that piano is perfect for this music. A 'proper' voicing would ruin it.

I looked you up and found that you have a pipe organ most of the time. My first experience with organ music was "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at a baseball game. I learned that it could do so much more as I grew older. My last experience was singing in church with the pipes of the organ around us, the choir. The organist had played at the ballpark in Dallas, Texas and when we practiced he would break into some of the things he played there. Glad I found you. It sounds like we will have fun.

I get that the structure is basic. But, man. The playing and coordination it takes to be really good is in no way basic. I honestly don't know how you get there fully with that left hand independence. To me it always feels like I'm learning very specific things, but never quite get it to a level where I'm satisfied.

You are quite right. I have not yet found a video that really addresses independence and coordination as you point out. Christian Fuchs (from Berlin) does videos that are the very helpful to me. I hope Fraser does not mind me plugging another channel.

There are Videos about that. But the essence is practice,it most be practise. But even here is a very good part to practice hand independence. From 16:25 on is perfect to practise it. Fraser says...go and practise this for a minute...rofl. This minute was 2 days for me. 😛

Wow! that's opened up a whole new world for you to talk about and demonstrate and I'm not talking the various forms of blues style playing, which you must, of course continue with! But developing on your fascinating anecdote about playing with Karl-Heinz Stockhausen gives you an excellent excuse to dwell more on the development of 'classical' music in the 20th century. Maybe (and consider it a dare if you like) venturing into the music of arguably the greatest composer for piano and organ and orchestra and voice(s) and, and, and (you get the idea); the incomparable Olivier Messiaen! Ah dear. So many wonderful composers and styles of composition and so little time...

Great! That’s the real thing. Boogie Woogie is marvelous. And your explanation and playing as well. Whatever people are saying playing boogie woogie, blues etc. Is great. Even on a organ. Or maybe just on a organ. How did you manage to got that piano right. Did you tune it yourself? Because getting the piano like this requires also some string changes. But I love it. Go on playing!

This video is a refreshing diversion from the organ. Can you give us a little background on the manufacturer of the Piano and what you did to bring it to playable condition?

It's an Irmler from Leipzig around 1900. The mechanics were pretty frozen when I got my hands on it, so with a bit of TLC, I got things moving again and working to a degree. Sadly it's a bit too far gone (case and soundboard are both pretty cracked) to have it fully restored...

Great, a grand piano! It sounds very mellow, like a cinema organ's piano! I love it! And it's quite rococo, very fancy... As a piano student, I will appreciate a lot these next at-home videos! (of course I love the organ, but, alas, I don't have access to one, just to a pedals harmonium (reed organ, just one manual and 3 stops on each half of the keyboard, and of course my electronic keyboard, but it's one manual as well), so piano it is for now... :-) Keep it up! BTW, loved your album! Both organs are sweet and your choice of stops gives for very melodic sounds, and the rhythms are cool... Ah, whn will I be able to sound half as cool? :-P Congratulations and keep up the great job! Cheers!

Since I only have a Yamaha P-125 (electronic piano with some organ sounds) I wonder if there is organ music for just one manual . Or will harmonium music does the job? Can you help?

I just have the Yamaha YPT-255, at least you have 88 keys! :-P From my very short experience with organ music, there's some partial solutions: a) there are music for just one manual, many early and portable organs had just one manual (and reef organs aka pedal harmoniums were very popular), it's a matter of finding it (not easy, I know, but read at the end); b) you can split the keyboard in two, and play two small manuals: it's not the same as in one over the other, but it's a partial solution to try and tackle more complicated sheet music; c) ultimately, you can transport the organ sheet music to piano and either simplify it a bit, or spread it all about the keyboard: the first is laboroius but doable, and it's something legit (we have been doing this since forever), the second solution is very demanding and well beyond my playing capabilities at the moment. In any case, playing with organ sounds will help you to improve your legato technique, especially when changing chords: many times you will have to leave one or more fingers pressed, I find this very different to playing piano, where you have the sustain pedal to help. And, finally, back to solution a): I think the easier way to find sheet music for one manual is to look for simple pastoral and church music: most smaller churches had simple harmoniums or small organs, with usually just one manual or two and no pedals. As, ultimately, music is music, it's as good as any other to learn, and it will usually be easier than the more famous pieces from Bach and company. If you are a church going person, many will sound familiar, which is a plus, and if you are not, well, then they will be fresh and interesting. As an added bonus, you can sing along in many of them (as most will be accompanied with a chorus), that helps to keep the spirits high when the technique (as in my case) is not up to the task... LOL. Thanks for the question and I hope I have been of assistance, but let's ask +Fraser Gartshore @Fraser Gartshore (mentions don't seem to work, let's hope he read this!) for his advice on this matter, maybe we can get a blog post our of this? ;-) In any case, good luck out there!

@@thomasstokhof5370 no problem! I have just remembered, most early electronic organs had just one manual, so songs by the Beatles and early rock hands will have one manual music as well, for example "The House of the Rising Sun" and many more! Good luck and have fun!

Oh Fraser!!! My piano teacher from Grade V upwards always told me to never trust a white piano "always hiding something" :) However, fab Boogie-Woogie!!!

Fraser Gartshore I think there's a home organ you can afford. This organ isn't a true organ it's just the keyboard adopted the organ style. This organ is the Yamaha Electone organ I think you must be familiar with it. Due to you have told us on before your childhood beginner organ lesson is learning on this instrument. This Electone organ I think is just cost around 2029.59 Euro. This model is the Yamaha STAGEA ELB-02. If you want you can go to www.tarotrade.com to purchased it. If you want a professional model like a pipe organ the you can choose the Yamaha STAGEA ELS-02X concert model.

@@FraserGartshore so i take it you don't like the others much. i've found the allens come plausibly close as a wurlitzer emulation. only main things missing are the pipes, the acoustic, and the second touches.

I do like them, it’s just their limitations in the modern world. I used to own a Hammond B3 back in the UK - sold it when I moved to Germany. (Big mistake!) I would like a new XK5 Setup - thanks to its midi capabilities, it could also run a Hauptwerk setup! It would have to be something flexible enough to cover all kinds of music!

Looks like a Bosendorfer or maybe a Heintzman?

I wish! It's a ratty old thing from Leipzig dated around 1900 or so. It's actually an Irmler. It's too far gone to have properly repaired, but it's fun playing old stuff on it for now!

Fraser Gartshore if the case is attractive the rest is only a matter of money... It doesn't sound like the soundboard is completely dead yet. Hammers and a restringing would probably do wonders

But does he know where middle c is?

@22:45 reminds me of the 1980's Coor's Les Paul commercial kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnispbNwn62wips.html (the hammers are just right, please don't have them brought to new quality, it would sound as dismal and ordinary as any other concert grand)

My poor brain can't take all that detail... Surely all that piano nees is a good tune? The tone is there but the strings aren't...

I've tried tuning it as well it will allow. The strings are old and brittle - I don't want to take any chances!
