Image averaging is something that is used a lot in astrophotography, but not so much in landscape photography and aerial photography. But it can be a great tool for both!
Also, if you want to cheat with your exposure times, this can help for that as well so it is definitely a technique you need to learn now to take better photos!

    I remember you talking about this with astro shots, but never really thought about using this technique with other forms of photography. I have been flying my old original Mavic Pro, which I still love, but does fall short with that small sensor sometimes. This technique is something that I am going to have to try. Hopefully all is well over there, Mike. I hope you and yours have a great weekend. Cheers!

    Thanks so much dude...it will be perfect for the mavic pro and you might even have the burst function as well, to get a series of shots with one button press...although this may have been a function brought in with the Pro2... We're all good, hiding out down in Phuket so enjoying having the beach 5 minutes away and some countryside to play around in. 😁👍

    As you said I do this all the time with my drones. It's fabulous. Also the Olympus EM1-X I use has a Live ND function. That does exactly what you describe in camera. Makes life really easy. I find Aurora HDR is a great program for any layering I need to do.

    Yes, stacking is a really useful technique! BTW, if you have Affinity Photo, you can also stack and average multiple images to achieve exactly the same effect - and IMO, it's even easier in AP than the second Photoshop method you demonstrated. There are other uses for stacking as well - e.g. removing "transients" between the images, such as traffic at a busy road junction or people passing in front of buildings.

  • @mikesphotography

    Thanks Tony. I hear great things about Affinity Photo. Most definitely, image averaging definitely has multiple uses. Thanks for watching 😁👍

    I've always used Median stack mode for astro images. Mean might be good if you want long exposure water, but median is the way to go for noise reduction and sharpness. Maybe worth another video comparing the two methods.

    Great! I use focus stacking for macro but this process is new to me. Thank you. If you use this method on Milky Way shots can your images vary in exposure and ISO? I will try it tonight again while shooting in the dark skies of North Dakota.

  • @mikesphotography

    @mikesphotography

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Connie, I'd keep the exposure and ISO the same. When you do stack your images, say in sequator or starry landscape stacker, those programs are looking for continuity in the images. The continuity will be picked up as what's meant to be there and the changing noise patterns will then be removed. So keeping everything the same would be the best tack for astro stacking. Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Thanks very much! It's a great little drone. I had the mavic air 1 before and got so frustrated with it dropping connectivity as it was only wifi, but with the mini2 it has the Occusync2 which is so much better ... I have no problem with flying it really far from me without any problems with signal. The video quality is great as well ... not quite the same as the mavic pro, but very usable. With image stacking, this helps with the noise form the small sensor as well. 😁👍

    Do you use Denoise Programs like Topaz and or Luminar--I find they work very well - I like the sky replacement option but I always indicate when I post on social media that it is a sky replacement - I really only use it when it is a flat milky white sky and or a bluebird sky - interesting technique and I will have to try it out.

  • @mikesphotography

    @mikesphotography

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Michael, I've used them before and really like Topaz. Image averaging is a great way to get rid of any unwanted noise. Good to hear what conditions you replace the sky with as well...it's all about making the photo better...and indicating when it is a composite over a photo. Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Hi Mike... what drive mode should I use in my sony camera for doing image averaging in photoshop?

  • @mikesphotography

    @mikesphotography

    2 жыл бұрын

    It depends if you are shooting handheld or from a tripod. If from a tripod, you can set the camera up to shoot 5 in a row with a 2 second delay, I'd just fire this off twice (it is called self timer continuous and it's the forth option down in the drive mode selector). If shooting handheld, I'd brace myself against a tree or a lamp-post if possible and then put it in high-speed drive and fire off 10-20 shots in quick succession. Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Hi Mike. Just watched your video and this is something I am going to try out next. Hope this isnt a stupid question, I am new to photoshop. Instead of taking a series of the same photos out in the field could I just take 1 photo and the jupicate the photo many times in Photoshop please.

  • @mikesphotography

    @mikesphotography

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Steve, No problem at all. You can't do that as the series of photographs will have exactly the same noise pattern. In taking different photographs, it will have slightly different noise patterns from one to the next, so photoshop can then determine through these small changes what is noise and what is meant to be there. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching 😁👍

    How to get “mean-looking” photos,😁. Nice. Haven’t seen this method yet on YT, Mike. Will keep it in mind. Does it matter if you uniformly edit all the pics in LR (say) before porting to PS, as opposed to doing LR edits lastly on the stacked “mean” image - if you know what I mean. (no kidding).
