I am a landscape photographer from the UK. Every week I go out on-location and make videos to try to inspire you to do the same.
The only way to get better at photography is to just get out and shoot! So this year, I will be taking you out with me as I photograph different scenes on location every Thursday.
2022 is all about landscape photography!
From nearly drowning my camera at Henrhyd Falls, to getting electrocuted on the Malvern Hills, it should be an entertaining year ... I'll also be teaching you something about photography every week in my videos.
My name is Mike Smith and I am a professional photographer and videographer. I have been a photographer since the mid 90's back when film was all the rage and I have been making short films and videos since 2008.

Very informative but I am sure I am being stupid having never shot a timelapse , is the interval time the time between each shot ? I want to do a timelapse of the Milky Way and for my still images I generally take around 20 single images of about 12 sec exposure time with a two second gap betwen the images and then stack them but time lapse has always seemed sa little complicated ?
@Mike Smith Sincere thanks for making this video. I'd already bought an L-bracket for my flippy screen Canon R7 and just couldn't get on with it, what with the screen being impeded and it only having one anchor point (going out of alignment too easily). I've now got a SmallRig cage thanks to your suggestion and it's so much better. The camera body is already very compact, so I don't feel the cage makes it uncomfortably large to keep on all the time. By the way, for anchoring in an Arca-Swiss clamp in portrait orientation, I've found the (new-ish) two-bolt offset SmallRig plate no. 3154 fits perfectly (18mm centre to centre bolt spacing). Having two bolts, it won't loosen and get out of alignment like a one-bolt plate. Thanks again!
on the sony a6700 i couldn't figure out nor did i see that dial. i was asking myself are my eyes really this bad. Thank you so much.
You are a great teacher tho I really enjoy your explanation and method 😊
Great I think I like bracketing but just one thing. Everyone says LR but in fact you’re using LRC and I get confused if it’s the same process or different. Not moaning just an observation loads of teachers do it lol.

Just looking back at this clip, now I've bought 3 lenses that could be added to this collection. They are the Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, the Laowa 10mm 2.8 Automatic and the very cheap, but outstanding fisheye the TTArtisan 11mm 2.8. I've had the Sony 14 for a while now and use it all the time, but I needed a wider fisheye because my Samyang 12mm has gone to its maker. So I bought the new Laowa 10mm because its the widest fully automatic for the Sony mount and it's rectilinear like my other Laowa lenses, the 12mm and 10-18mm. But I needed something else wider for close up skateboarding and astrophotography, so was very surprised to find quality at the lower end with the TTArtisan 11mm, am waiting on its arrival, but very excited. Also taking the Laowa 10mm out today for the first time to take skateboarding, will be great to have eye/body auto focus at this wide for the first time. Of course when I need to put these two lenses away because of the weather I have the Sony.
Excellent information, thank you!
This is, again, very useful comparison from you. Thanks a lot!
I purchased an adapter for my Nikon Nikkor series, and I got an error message, "No lens present". My stock Nikon lens has little metal pins that apparently need to be connected to the body in order for the body software to detect the lens. None of these KZread videos discuss this issue.
i Find these super zooms lack contrast. u should post the raw instead of the edited photo cause i suspect the contrast is lacking.
Useful. Thank you!
How I wish I've watched this before I bought my L-bracket for my A7IV. Great advice! Thanks for sharing.
you also did a fast shutter vs slow shutter with cpl in the waterfalls
no
I have a built-in flash on my canon was an additional flash like you had on your video. Would that have any issues when using also what brand of flash you use to demonstrate this video
I am looking for a lightweight and compact camera to use on high altitude expeditions in the Himalayas. and I am expecting to get good quality photos and videos of other mountains from the top of the summit. Canon M 50 mirrorless, Sony ZVE-10 or Fujifilm x100v. which would be a great? I'll be very grateful if you guide me. Thank you.
I might agree that a 28-200 or 28-300 looks like an all-around zoom. It's very tempting as a travel lens, I admit. But there is a very big but, distortion. Especially when using wide angle. And distortion that cannot be corrected with a simple click. In landscapes it may not matter so much, or there are not always straight lines that can make the distortion noticeable, but if anyone wants to see it, search for "D3 takes on Z8" and go to 8.34 In that case it is a Nikkor 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 but the same on the 24-85 f/3.5-4.5. If the zoom includes wide angle, so that the distortion is not annoying you should go for professional constant aperture zooms. With zooms ranging from telephoto the distortions are much better controlled. Even the Nikkor 16-35 f4 It is criticized by Nikonists for having atrocious distortion in 16mm. So, if you are used to using prime lenses please make sure that the zoom you are going to buy has a distortion that you can tolerate.
Just look at photographers of the past and what they used, notice how paparazzi started wearing military style pouches and slings for their cameras and their big telephoto lenses, its ironic but its also worth taking a note that while the camera is not a gun, it still weights a lot and you still need to be able to point it at things so the same principles are there, the Y strap makes the most sense for the avg user, the regular shoulder strap its good for smaller cameras like you said.
Wouldn't it be good if camera manufacturers built the arca-swis grooves directly into the camera body, along the bottom and up the side.
Is this why they discontinued the RED PRO prime lenses?
What you should really do is speed up this video, talk faster, switch from screen to screen really fast... just to make sure nobody can follow a thing you say!
Good tutorial!
Very very very useful Real master
Do not look at his eyes 😑
Not sure why you want a binary answer. For some people it is and for some people it isn't. That isn't a binary solution as each have their own reasons for shooting file. Even after switching to digital I never quit shooting film of all sizes. I just love the process right through developing my own film. There isn't an experience like it in digital. But I love digital also.
thank you for this!
Just ordered the small rig half cage and NEEWER Pack of 2 Quick Release Plate with Four Side Arca Type Slots, 1/4 Inch Screw, 38 mm Camera Tripod Mounting Adapter, Compatible with Peak Design Capture Backpack Clamp V3, Falcam F38, QPR-5, two for less than the price of one Peak Design 🙂. Great and very informative video, thanks a million, was getting very frustrated with the floppy screen on my newly acquired A7IV. Subscribed!
Amazing
I'd have saved my money and gone for the 42.3MP A7Riii for landscape, improvements in continous AF don't mean much and you get focus stacking which is great for landscape
This series still updating? Oh god there is so many composition out there i wish to hear you to talk about 😢
Complete begineer here. 2:52 also can intepret as foreground interested right?
I like the Kodak Gold. It has the vivid colors I prefer for outdoorsy stuff.
I have a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55 AF-S lens. Remembering that the D600 has a crop mode, I was glad to find it functioned perfectly well as an 18-55 on that too, albeit with a lower output, and I could have kept it as full-frame but with vignetting. Here's the kicker though, it fits the F4 and works perfectly as a 24-55 and does it fast, too. The AF-S lens wasn't even developed when the F4 was current.
Thank you very much for this tutorial! I'm a photographer from Kenya. I begun venturing into Astrophotography a while back, but due to some unforeseen circumstances I had to stop. I'm back now... Full steam ahead! Any Kenyan, East African, or African Photographer who's into Astrophotography here?
Nice vid thanks! Subbed.
Great explanation!
Directly to the point with good acknowledge, difficult to find stuff like this in KZread... Thanks for the tutorial
Thanks for sharing valuable information. I will definitely use this knowledge. Nicely explained. 👍
I use xa7 by Fujifilm. It does have the exposure bracketting option but it won't automatically merge the 3 images. We have to do it mentally.
Got myself an L-Bracket for sony a7 iv removed the side and i am using strap slot on the bottom were the grip is so its not bothering or blocking me when i am taking picture and on the screw hole on the bottom of my camera i have the quick release plate for my gimbal and everthing is so simple no hassle at all. I wanna use my gimbal i remove the strap [Peak design] and put on my gimbal easy and then i dont wanna use gimbal remove and put back on my strap. Hasnt disapointed me
I know this is a video from 2018 but I have watched it a few times trying to set my camera up to be able to use back button focus.. With that said let me say how new to camera systems I am.. Green is not even the word to describe me....... I got frustrated a few times and kept putting the settings in this video back to where they were before I started... Today I came back eager to get this corrected... Watched the video 3 times and still could not get it.... I know when I write this next part that some will say... oh you should have done that part first but please know, these settings are very new to me... I finally figured out what the issue was and yes I am proud of myself for it.... I followed Mike's steps again and was almost frustrated again.. Took a deep breath and the thought of seeing the focus box move with the button. Then it hit me... I had my focus area set to Center and not Flexible Spot!!!!!! It is now set to this and it is finally working.... I wrote this because there could be someone as new as me that could be missing that step as well....
Two shoulder straps with two anchor points on your should so you can carry 4 cameras and then have two mega zooms strapped to your back like a ninja turtle. Optional embroidered strap to tie around your head for catching swear, Rambo style.
Watching 5 years after posting and still helpful Thank you Mike, you an OG
Welp, seems like I'm going to continue using a shoulder strap, which I first experienced when I borrowed my dad's DSLR. Although the clip is interesting, I often need to put my bag down, or maybe I need to grab something really quick, and honestly feel far too paranoid if it isn't securely attached to me.
For Blackrapid straps, if you use Manfrotto with a PL-200 quick release plate then you could keep the quick release plate on the camera and attach the strap from the screw on the plate. That's what I do. I don't use the supplied screw mount on my cameras with the exceptions of cameras I don't use with tripods.
Now I need to find out if a Sigma 18-55 will work on my R8 dang!
A minha está com marcas de gordura e alguns pontos, não consegui remover com cotonetes, o que faço?
Great video and very clear explanation. A couple of questions ; why did you opt for ISO 100 rather than 50? What is the advantage of using Multi exposure mode over lets say entire screen average. I would have thought 'entire screen average' would return more consistent results....but there is a great chance of me being mistaken on that! What do you think?
