Colour Theory for Photographers - Get Better Colours in Your Photographs - Episode 4

Today I talk about colour theory and how it can help you with your photography. It is one thing to think about the colour palette when editing, but if you think about it when taking the photograph, it can really up your photography skills when you take photos with intention.
I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!

That was really interesting. I last did ColoUr Theory thirty years ago at art college and did not realise that there was an RGB wheel. Every day is a school day. I've also moved away from my ancient Lightroom 5.7 to using DxO Photolabs and I really miss the ability to Split Tone. Sadly that's a no-go area. However when video editing, I try to aspire to the Orange and Teal colour grade, hinted in your sunset images, but it is incredibly hard to achieve without looking like a dog's dinner. I do enjoy the occasional Black and White image. Rather than being lazy and just removing "Saturation", I like to play with the colour channels to see if I can bring out subtle details or tones to help enhance the image in its Black and White form. I have no doubt that you do this as well. 😀

This is one of those videos that you tag for future referencing. An excellent tutorial packed into 9 mins. I pick my camera brand by the color science. You would be surprised how much they differ. I have an old Olympus e-5 with a Kodak sensor. It still produces some of the best color representations I have ever seen. I still use it for shots of flowers and landscapes.

Erudite vid, Mike. Color shift bits effective, along w/editing screens. Don’t hear much about shades, tints and tones from other channels. “So what” factor at last third. TBH, my hunch is that earlier stuff is too technical and voluminous for most of your viewers, - needs careful replay for ideas to sink in. Took me a while to just absorb CMY when I made my own color prints from slides. (Tended to get it mixed up w/“CYA”.😊) “Harmonies” something new. Good tip for temp/tint slider. When the “big idea” behind a “theory” has been proven, it’s no longer a “theory”, right? Should be called color “science” or “laws” - we don’t have a “theory” of gravity; we have a law. Table duly noted - it’s grey, right? HT 1:02, Mike 1:01. Cheers!

Thanks Mike for another spot on lesson. You really know how to break boundaries of the box - nowadays photographers and those wanna be ones mostly focus on getting familiar with varieties of techniques and creative ideas, so this voyage to the forgotten world of the fundamental knowledge feels like a breeze in a hot sunny day. What video editor you use? I am on a brink to buy DaVinchi Resolve 18 - do you have any experience with that? Cheers Mike, thanks a lot for your efforts and I hope This time, next year you - maybe won't become a millionaire, but you might easily double the number of your subscribers.

Thanks so much for your kind words! Colour theory is one of those fundamentals that really helps... especially when you are out in the field and you start thinking of the colours you want, but also don't want in your frame. I use Premier Pro, but I have dabbled with Davinci 18. It is a great program and if you are learning video editing, it is worth learning one program and learning it really well. I heard someone say that when you switch programs after knowing one really well, it is like learning how to do about a thousand tasks ever so slightly differently. I think it might have been potato jet... 🤔 If you like it and get on with the free version well, then I'd say it is well worth the investment. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Really interesting thank you. But how on Earth do you get your audio so consistent? It never changes from shot to shot - like you’ve re-recorded it in the studio with perfect lip-sync!!!! 😀

  • @mikesphotography

Haha! Thanks so much!! I have been making videos for about 20 years now so I have learned a few tricks to get it as clean as possible. I use a wireless lav mic and keep the levels the same, so as long as I am in range, it keeps the audio fairly similar from shot to shot. Then there is the wind... which is the bane of my life! 😆 I do have the fluffy wind cover on my mic all the time, but I do have to be conscious of it. I try to keep the wind on my back and this seems to work, but thinking of that as well as trying to stay in frame and remember what I am talking about is a little tricky at times, especially when it is gusting all over the place. Then I do a bit of audio editing to get it sounding better than just out of the mic. Great to hear you are liking it though. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Great explanation of color theory, Mike. It is ironic that a Welshman is adding vowels to words (colour), seeing as the entire Welsh language seems to string as many consonants as humanly possible together to make words, but that is another matter. I started following Blake Rudis many years ago on KZread. He is a former painter that got into Photography and has mastered Photoshop. He has some really great videos on color theory, as well as many other things that are worth checking out. Hope you and yours are well, brother.

Thanks so much for letting me know. Since youtube moved away from the subscriber model and moved to the clicks and likes it has been getting harder and harder to reach people who would really benefit from my videos... Even when you click on the bell and select all, it doesn't always work... I have been really frustrated with the model recently. I had one video that really popped, and over 350,000 people watched it... then when I doubled down and made more videos like it, the following ones weren't show to a fraction of these people. It is almost like each video stands on its own and the subscriber count is just a badge for bragging rights... Anyway, enough of my rant... once again thanks for letting me know and let's hope they get it sorted, otherwise I'll have to start making cat videos!! 😆 As always thanks for watching 😁👍

Do you use Photo RAW, i think thats a kind of Photoshop? Or do you use Lightroom. I find it hatd to decide which to use, Ps or Lr or LrC. I just started and until know only used the Photo RAW from Photoshop. But i heard LrC could be better. It depends on what i Photograph i think, with my photography (Birds and other Animals) i think editing is not as important as Colourgrading denoise etc. What could you recommend me to try out?
