To make setting a taper with a DTI (Dial Test Indicator) easier to get absolutely bob on, there are tips called "elephant foot" which screw in the DTI spindle in place of the ball tip. Basically these are a flat pad and help in not reading a taper above or below the correct centre line. For anyone doing this sort of set up they are very useful.

Thank you so much for showing me the correct way to get the angle right. I set my compound to 8 deg & cut it at that. My collets had a small amount of wobble when put in lightly, obviously the angle wasn't dead on. It is now!! Thanks again.

That is the reason it reduces the load on the tool Especially on a deep coarse thread

Good on ya'; although you'll never know for sure, your warning will prevent a number of injuries in the future.

Just wanted to say thanks for the videos, I am just starting out so watching everything to learn all I can. What is the reason for setting the compound to that angle for threading? I can imagine it keeps all the cutting to the left hand edge of your tool?

A friend is a mechanical engineer at a large naval ordnance facility. One day, an experienced machinist who definitely knew better stuck his hand down the bore of a large gun barrel that was slowly spinning in a lathe. It twisted his arm off and threw him across the shop. The lathe didn't even slow down. Nobody knew why he did it. He definitely knew better. These machines are completely indifferent to your safety. After years, even the pros can become complacent. Don't be that guy.

John sorry to bother you if you see this I'm currently working on a ER32 collet chuck and messed one up..But starting another I'm using EN8 also,How deep does the hole go for a E32 collet please ,does it just go in as far as the first grove pal..I'm just trying to work out how much material to leave for the collet end. I'm using en8 2" diam by 3.180" length. Im hoping to have around 1.400" for the spindle nose threads and runoff and hopefully what is left will be enough for the collet part. Thanks john hope you are having a nice week..The threading tools i was using let me down on my first attempt,It was a Chinese 8mm x8mm brazed carbide tool just bent lol then the carbide snapped off.. I switched to a soba 6mm x 6mm HSS tool that just bent and went blunt within a few passes,I've ordered some Seco 16NR 12 w CP500 grade internal threading tips..And a 16mm x 16mm internal threading bar to give me some more rigigidity.. Although im going to have to hand file it down to around 15mm lol..As the bar wont fit through my tool post..Too get to the stage i did then be let down by the threading part is a bit of a kick in the balls..As i only have a small lathe.. Any ways cheers for the video i will keep watching it I'm hoping to have better luck this time around :D..

I don't know how big/heavy your camera is, John, but have you seen these. It may help you get the camera into places an ordinary tripod won't reach. Google - Joby-GorillaPod-Magnetic-Tripod-Black/

Do you use prescription glasses, or like me, do you buy your reading glasses at the WalMart, or equivalent. I do wear prescription lenses but keep reading glasses all over the house and shop. - Just to let you know, you'll figure out that camera mount later. - Looks like you voted in an Iraqi election with the blue finger. - Great work on turning that taper.
