Gerunds vs Infinitives | Advanced Grammar Lesson
ABOUT THE LESSON 📚
Let's talk GRAMMAR! Gerunds and Infinitives can often confuse English learners...which VERBS do they follow? Today, we're going to go over common verbs that are followed by either a gerund or infinitive. And, of course, we'll practice what we've learned at the end.

I learned it this way. Let's say if we have two verbs, we always use "to" between them; for example, "it's nice to meet you (to be + to + meet)", "You're to go to bed now", "It doesn't hurt to review old grammar", etc. I know know I overly simplify it (there are some exceptions like modal verbs, etc.) :D, but it works in general, so we just need to learn verbs with gerunds and a few exceptions. Thank you for your lesson :)
I used to hate grammar and dread studying it but i know it's important if i want to become fluent.. and figured out your videos has been refreshing and now grammar is not as boring as before 😊😅

Especially in German. The sentence structure is really important for nouns. I tell you though: I never thought a noun could become my enemy until I started taking German. They change in every Case, which I had to learn before I could get into beginner's German. I went my whole life knowing English without being aware of the Nominative, Accusative, Dative & Genitive cases.

But thank God all gerunds in German have das as the form: das Lesen (reading) das Arbeiten (working) etc. So you don't have to figure out if it's der? die? or das?

I think it is a strength of English not to be taught with the Nominative, Genitive, Dative, & Accusative cases. Of course, the bad news is that nobody will be able to give us the correct definition of Nominative, Genitive, & Dative. Also, the morphology mechanism of the plural form is an integral part of the case system. So, we actually have to derive the relationships ourselves. Then, we will be able to realize that given any root word, we can just turn it into a noun, adjective, adverb, or verb, with its P-components of gender, number, and case. To iterate, our strength is that we know that the case does not inherently define the meaning. Example: the word fast can be a noun, an adjective, adverb, and verb. So, we can say "For yesterday fast fast, I fasted fastly". Another word would be "present' with its different pronunciations: noun present (gift), verb present (to show), adjective-adverb present (now), adjective present (pronounced as pre-sent, meaning to-sent-beforehand). So, we can say "For the present pre-sent present, I present presently the options."
Coincidently, i watched this lesson on weekend 😃. As you said, i practice English as much as i can and i hope to improve my English little by little. I really like watching your videos and decide to learn more and more. Thanks so much, Mr. Wes.

I have a question if you could answer i'll appreciate that, in 15:00 minute of the video about verbs that if we use gerunds or infinitive the meaning will be change. The tense of the verb of the first sentence is simple present, so why the meaning is like talking about memories?

hello ! I am vishwas from India . Your lesson on gerund & infinitives is very interesting as usual . You seem to have slowed down to make non-native speakers understand comfortably . Gerunds seem to be verbal nouns which need to be used as per collocatiions . You could have clarified the difference between gerund & present participle . One of the viewers has mentioned I enjoying i the class is not correct .It's A present participle notA gerund . The lesson is very instructive . Thanks A lot ! Good night !

Hi, Wes! I am watching this video. I am watching that part where the verb can be followed by an infinitive and a gerund but the meaning changes. I remembered buying a present. It is clear, it is a memory, I remember to the event itself. She remembered to buy a present. You said she remembered and didn't forget to buy a present but she still didn't buy one - but she will. Could this also mean that she bought the present already because she did not forget to buy the present?
@InteractiveEng
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Judit. In that case you would use the gerund. I remember buying the present (you bought the present). When using the infinitive, it means you still have to do this thing. Depending on the context, it could be used to talk about a completed action. For example, maybe someone accuses her of not remembering to buy a present. In that case you could say it and the meaning would infer that she already bought the present. 😊
Sir your classes are awesome in order that i can learn English from you . You look like handsome in today's video. Thank you very much sir I Zubair from Bangladesh.
