    A gerund can only act as a predicate nominate. We just talk about both predicate adjectives and predicate nominative at the same time because they are nearly identical - it's just that one is an adjective and one is a noun (like a gerund).

    Hi teacher Neil Hepworth. I've read a context as follows: "Area navigation (RNAV) is means of combining, or filtering, inputs from one or more navigation sensors and defining positions that are not necessarily eo-located with ground-based navigation aids. This facilitates aircraft navigation along any desired flight path within range of navigation aids; alternatively, a flight path can be planned with autonomous navigation equipment. Optimum area navigation is achieved USING a combination of ground navigation aids and autonomous navigation equipment." Putting the technical knowledge aside, here I want to ask you why they can use USING like that? Normally, I think the context, or sentence including USING above will be more specified if they put a word 'BY' just before the word 'USING' in the context above? Thanks.

  • @neilhepworth6968

    @neilhepworth6968

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Hà Hồ Sỹ Well, this is an interesting question that I've never received before, but here's my thought: While it's true that many people would speak this way, grammatically your fix is correct. BY USING would be grammatically correct because then USING starts a gerund phrase acting as the object of the preposition for the word. The sentence is also awkward because it is written in the passive voice, which again, most people would write a passive sentence and then use the word BY to indicate who is doing the action. The only exceptions that I can think of have to do with when it is/is not appropriate to use what we call Understood words. And while I understand Understood words, I don't have a firm enough grasp on them to tell you if this sentence is a case of using and Understood word correctly. Hope this helps.

    What is the different between gerund and present participle ?

  • @neilhepworth6968

    @neilhepworth6968

    9 жыл бұрын

    loly lovato Well, for starters, both end in -ing. However, the difference is in the way that we treat them. A gerund acts like a noun. I could be the subject of the sentence, the direct object, the object of the preposition, etc. Usually (though there are exceptions) a noun can NOT be removed from a sentence. On the other hand, a participle acts like an adjective and so it CAN be removed from a sentence (though I'm sure there's exceptions to that rule, too). It all depends on how the -ing word is being used in the sentences. Nouns can't be removed. Adjectives can. Hope this helps.

    thanks . I confused a little about this sentence: Mr.Hepworth enjoys painting his face and..... I think "painting his face " act as Indirect object because it contains "his " possessive?????????????

  • @neilhepworth6968

    @neilhepworth6968

    7 жыл бұрын

    In this sentence there is no indirect object because we are painting a face "to" or "for" anyone. On the other hand, "painting his face" IS the thing being enjoyed, therefore it is the direct object.

  • @neilhepworth6968

    +Ranad Khashab Yes, it's just rare (so I tend to ignore it when I'm covering gerund basics). Here is an example: Someday I will give skiing a try. In this sentence, the direct object is "try" because that is what is being given. The indirect object is "skiing" (which is a gerund - notice the -ing and how it acts like a noun) because it comes between the verb and direct object and it is the thing being given the try. Does that help?

    You made a mistake at 7:10 because "enjoys" is a linking verb and because of that "chasing small animals" is a subject complement. But the lecture was really helpful despite this. :)

  • @tuongla5077

    @tuongla5077

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for disagreeing with you but I don't think "enjoys" is a linking verb, based on my knowledge (might be just a theory), linking verbs can be replaced with the word "equals" and it will still make sense, because linking verbs and its complements rename/describe the subject. In this case, Mr. Hepworth is NOT equal to "painting his face" because that just won't make sense, so therefore "enjoys" would be an action verb, and "painting his face" is a direct object. Correct me if I'm wrong! 😊 maid250

    +Tuong La when you put instead of "enjoys" the verb be form like: is,are,was,were etc. and the sentence still retains meaning than it is a linking verb. But still you have some exceptions to the rule. I think I am right. But I think we're here to learn :)
