A gerund is a verb that ends in "-ing" and functions as a noun in a sentence, such as Swimming is fun. Reading is my hobby etc A present participle is also a verb that ends in "-ing," but it functions as adjective or adverb and part of the verb phrase such as " The children are playing outside in the sunshine. (Here, "playing" is a present participle used as part of the verb phrase "are playing. The barking dog woke me up early this morning. (Here, "barking" is a present participle used as an adjective to describe the dog.)
