I am an Italian living my whole life in Germany, I was 16 watching this with all my german friends. In the 118 Minute they said they wanted to go smoke a cigarette before the penalties and I went with them. I forgot my pack of smokes at my seat near theTV and went back when the goal happened. I screamed so loud out of my lungs and they all ran back into the room devastated and they couldnt believe it. This was one of the best days of my life and I will never forget it.

Of course. Italy played this unreal game with Germany for 120 minutes, had one less day than France to recover before Final, and again, went to overtime. While Italy played better than France during regular tome (a generous penalty for France, immediate tie by Materazzi, a post from Toni that would have ended the game), but they paid this effort in overtime. The last 10 minute, Italy couldn't even run anymore, they were physically finshed. Thankfully, they had more nervous reserves than France and won on penalties. While France's captain literally lost his head, Cannavaro stood like an heroic statue in the midle of the field transmitting confidence and trust to his teammates, who delivered 5 out of 5 penalties. For ex: if u score 30 seconds from kick off u technically scored in the first minute...if u score at 1:20 from kickoff u scored in the second minute...after 118 its into the 119th minute, the 118th minute already passed...hope i explained that well lol

Watching this legendary Italian squad is a pleasure. Pirlo’s precision is unbelievable, does not miss a single pass!!

I remember my father screaming "Score this goal, Pirlo!" as in "Don't risk a pass or whatever!" Pirlo instead passed to Grosso and the rest is history 😃 When Del Piero scored it happened so fast that I actually didn't exult. I literally stared at the TV, stunned. Then I looked at my father and I just smiled. My father rose up from his armchair and said: "Well, I'll now go to sleep."

Fully agree. The team in 1990 was absolutely superior to any other team. Italy was extremely unlucky with Argentina on penalties, and the facto, in the field won every single match (besides the aforementioned 1-1 that led to penalties). Baggio, Maldini, Baresi and others deserved at least one World Cup. It's insane to think these football icons did not lift one.

@Dhi Mancini I don't think so, Italy ruled the match, just look the ball possess statistics (ita: 58% ger:42%) and the shots on target rate (ita:11 ger:6). I remember that the only think that worried me during this match were penalties, but in the regular time I never thought that Germany could win this match. Just look at Gilardino opportunity in the extra-time.

I am a diehard Germany fan. This game here sums up my childhood.I still remember where i was while watching this game. back then i was 12 years old and i was blinded by my love for Germany. watching this 16 years later made me realize how special that game was and how much i loved that team. But now all i can think of is how complete and how well-assembled this Italian team is. A real joy to watch them play. This team played football the right way. I say became because of how he played. He was never overrated in my book, he just had far too much attention because the English media. Pirlo was more quiet and let his game do the talking. Deco was great as well but never on that platform with Zidane and Ronaldhino.

I'm an Indonesian but my favorite national football team is Italy..I sobbed like a baby when Grosso scored,and laughing really hard when Del Piero scored in final minutes..Forza Gli Azzurri.. Love from Indonesia..

Totally. Italy was the team of destiny in that tournament. Nothing but heartbreak since 1994, and 06 was finally their time!

1990: (West) Germany won the World Cup on Italian soil. 2006: Italy won the World Cup on German soil.

i remember that game and it still give me fast heartbeating especially, when italy scored both winning goals :) i am half italian half german BUT my heart ever beated for italy, so that moment was such a great memory for me :) bcs i live in germany and i hated thier racist talk against me and other italians, so i never felt more satisfied to see them cry :D

I as a German can only congratulate to that win and the World Cup. Very well done, very awesome players you had back then.

the combination of Buffon as a GK with defenders like Grosso, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Chiellini, and Nesta made this team a fortress. starting from the group stage all the way to the final, the only goals they got scored on were one own goal (Zaccardo against the US) and the penalties. that's really impressive.

Del Piero’s goal still brings tears of joy to my eyes. Best match ever

I think Pirlo's pass was the most magical moment of this game and probably one, if not the best pass that destroyed a defence. Beautiful.

The last four minutes of this match will NEVER be forgotten by those who participated and those who watched it live. Fourteen years later, I still screamed my lungs out

What an electric atmosphere at Dortmund. Absolutely a thriller match. I have never seen such an atmosphere and a thriller match like this 🔥. Italy v Germany matches are always special. 1970- 2006 nothing has changed when these two teams come against each other. Cannavaro, Buffon, Grosso, Pirlo ,Del Piero what a team. That Italy team deserved to be the champions 🏆😍 and they just did this in the most pleasant way.

This is the beautiful age of football. Everything beautiful is gone and won't come back

Germany could wipe out Italian economy

As a Germany fan I remembered this as a 50-50 game that ended in heartbreak right before penalties. The reality was that Italy was far better for most of the game. They had a better team overall and the clearer chances throughout. This was the beginning of the national team resurgence for Germany but in hindsight this team wasn't quite there yet. As much as it pains me to admit, Italy were clear deserved winners.

@@peppedf2792 The bests traditions is something like that. 1-Brazil 2- Italy and Germany 3- France, Argentina and Netherlands (They didn't won a World Cup, however, changed how the game were played in the 70's) 4-Uruguay and England 5-Spain Brazil needs to be at the top, even when they don't have the most brilliant generation, the squad is insane.

Materazzi's performances are perhaps the most underrated

I watch this for many many times in my life . That 2 goal make me fans to italy so hard , and all about like culture , cars factory , another athete for another sports. This match is timeless . Actually, if you listen closely just after Del Piero's goal, you can hear the final whistle. Same thing happened in the Round of 16 against Australia; game was called right after Totti's goal.

I have not seen a better World Cup match in my lifetime (1998-now). Even though Germany have never beaten Italy in a World Cup game, those match-ups are always epic.

Italy won by penalties in 2006 and it was a massive exorcism for the Italians because they lost on penalties in the 1/2 of 1990 vs Argentina , in the final of 1994 vs Brazil and in the 1/4 of 1998 vs France . Plus they were completely robbed by Korea in 2002

In 2006 WC Buffon was a monster, best goalkeeper ever.

In my lifetime, out of every match i've watched; this might be the best match at the highest level i ever saw. it had everything, and i had never been more entertained by a game that went goalless till the 119th minute.

What an epic match , with an epic finish. As a Azzurri fan i was delighted with the result, yet it was the first time I ever felt sorry for the opposition. Both teams gave their all and no one deserved to lose this match. A World Cup classic match forever etched in my memory. Though nothing beats Italy v Brazil in 1982, which for me is the greatest world cup match of all time..

This was the first world cup I watched as a teen age boy. I became Italian fan from this match and I am still supporting them though they're not in the world cup consecutively.

ABSORBING. A game for the ages. Germany impressive but Italy superb, led by Cannavaro and Pirlo. A genius on defense, a genius of creativity.

Cannavaro... Cannavaro... CANNAVARO!

What a brilliant game those two Italian goals were masterpieces.

I still remember that I cried happy tears after Italy had scored the second goal.

I’m gonna go as far as to say this is the most perfect match I’ve ever watched in my whole life. Rewatching now is still as exciting as seeing it live back then. The whole match plays out like a movie. From start to finish it’s an absolute behemoth of a match and I would put it up as one of the greatest sporting moments of all time.
