I could instantly detect there were no real solutions. From eq 1, if squared results in x^2 + 2xy + y^2 = 36. But eq 2 says xy = 36. This means that x^2 + 72 + y^2 = 36. This means that x^2 + y^2 = -36. This is impossible in the real world.

I visualised the graphs in my head: a straight line and a hyperbola. It was quite easy to satisfy myself that there are no solutions in the real world.

The two-variable equation can be immediately reduced to a one-variable one, due to the symmetries. Let x=3+z, y=3-z. Thus (3+z)(3-z)=36 --> 9-z^2 =36 --> z = sqrt(-27) --> z= i*sqrt(27), ---> x=3+i*sqrt(27), y=3-i*sqrt(27)

Using : "x and y are the two solutions of the equation x2-sx+p=0 with s=x+y abd p=xy", you could go directly to 2:20 ;-)

thank you, so nice a problem ! well somewhat easier than x² - 6x + 6² = 0 would be to solve the equation x² - px + p² = 0 , then we would not forget to gather the factors p² under the √ sign . now at 3:25 we have only ±√ [(-6)² - 4(1)(+6²)] = ±√ (6² - 4·6²) = ±√ 6²(1 - 4) = ±6√(-3) . what we can see is that we do not need to first compute and later factor those values of the large numbers of 4×6² and 3×6² . so let us leave 6² simply be 6² . so nice .

Why in god’s name do you continually use the quadratic formula? It’s way easier to get the roots via completing the square. I got the same two roots you did for x w/out having to use the quadratic formula and I got it much faster

Math Olympiad? Such a simple problem? Subsitute y or x from xy=36 to x+y=6 yielding a quadratic equation in x or y. Then apply formula for getting roots of a quadratic equation. No challenge to think hard in solving.

No possible solution. If X+Y =6 then both x and Y must be less than 6. Therefore XY must be less than 36.

If you square eq1 and then sub eq 2 into it, you get x^2 + y^2 = -36.
