The average age of the Fallschirmjager in Normandy was 17. In photos some appear to be a lot younger. The German high command did not expect the invasion to happen in Normandy so these soldiers, barely more than children, were critically under supplied with ammunition. They nevertheless gave the US Airborne one hell of a fight around Carentan. It took 9 jumps to qualify as a Fallschirmjager.

Wehrmacht was the term used for the overall German military. The Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and Heer were all part of the Wehrmacht. But it is somewhat different to have paratroopers as part of the Luftwaffe rather than the Heer. Modern Bundeswehr Fallschirmjäger are part of the Heer rather than the Luftwaffe.

@ka4zam I had forgotten that, Goering must have had an ego larger than his belly. Lol I mean not to knock other forces but the Hermann Goering division was some of the best troops in the Army. @@genebandy Depended on the Division. A German historian wrote an interesting essay about it. He found out that some of the SS-Divisions had really high combat stats and performed above average, also because they were better equipped and very experienced. But this were only a few Divisions (if I remember correctly 1. - 5. and 12.), rest of the SS Divisions, especially the late ones were often a waste of material and all in all more a prestige project than helpful. Best equipped German Division was the ,Großdeutschland’ (Heer), best armoured Division the Panzer-Lehr-Division, which performed poorly because of the lack of air superiority.

The Fallschirmjäger were used in the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and Greece with mixed results. Then they landed on Crete. Even though they did take the island, it was a very costly victory. Hitler forbade the use of parachute operations on a large scale after that. From then on, the Fallschirmjäger were used as elite infantry on the defensive. I think only the first 5 Fallschirmjäger divisions were given formal parachute training. The rest after that were Fallschirmjäger in name only.

During the war , there was actually a mixture of both in the Luftwaffe, and other services as well. Uniform regulations could be, and were relaxed, out of necessity, due to supply chain issues, and whatever was on hand , or what could be picked up on the battlefield. There are newsreels depicting Army soldiers wearing camouflage pattern smocks on the Eastern Front, designed for and generally attributed to the Waffen SS.

I think from mid-war onwards, German paratroopers were elite in name only. Most were half trained ground crew kit out in jump helmets and uniforms but has never been on an airplane let alone a jump.
