This is great advice. Love seeing the end result. I get too confused with W&T ‘s. It s hard when patterns are written as W&T but I just keep very good notes. Tired of frogging, lol😂😅😊. I agree our results make a difference, and that practicing on a swatch is extremely important before trying it on a pattern.

Thank you! I've been knitting for over 50 years. This is one of the few things I've never been able to make look nice. Because of that, I just avoided anything with this type of shaping and never used it to perfec fit. Now with German short rows on the knit side and w&t on purl side, I'M FREE! I'm teaching my granddaughters to knit, and they love the little stories I make up to help them remember. So here's how I'll teach them this; Cat And Dog You are out walking looking for the dog. As you're walking you come upon your cat Stockings (St st). You bend over to pet him when you hear your dog Pearl barking! You turn around and go running across the rocks (purl bumps) until you find Pearl. You put on her leash but leave her there, tied to a post while you go back to get stockings. You walk and walk, "here kitty kitty". There's Stockings, 4 legs (& twist is his back). You scoop him up and take him home then you have to go back across the rocks to get Pearl. You are in a hurry so you just scoop up little Pearl puppy and continue across the rocks to her house. As the girls are growing up, they tell me that they don't think of the whole story after a while, but individual words kinda stick to remind them of key points. So they both usually stopped knitting during school months but started again in the summer. They remembered that Granny lives on Knitwit Way and the street sign is on the right going to visit her. They live on Pearly Place and going home the sign post is on the left. In this magic land it doesn't matter where you live, or which way you turn, the wind always blows from rt to lft. The wind blows your scarf or pony tail, your hair, right to left. Basically I just talk, make up stories giving a name and it's reference because you never know what will stick as a future reminder.

Great video. I am at the shoulder shaping just using german short rows for the first time. I am not very happy with this on the purl end so will undo it this week and redo in wrap and turn. I really hope it looks better. Thank you x Debbie x

Hello - I really enjoyed this very informative video. One question: Did I understand you correctly when you said that for the German Short row on the knit side that you knit one stitch BEYOND where the instruction tells you to turn? I am trying to understand the math of it if with wrap & turn (purl side) you purl to the designated stitch but with the German, you knit one stitch beyond. I would so appreciate a clarification. Many thanks. And again, a wonderfully informative video.

Hi, if you are going to use German Short rows then you need to knit the stitch that you would have originally W+T. I hope this make sense. :)

Sock heals, sweater backs, anywhere you want your garment to “turn” or become shaped instead of flat.
