German Schmear brick fireplace. Easier than you think!!

Фильм және анимация

Let me show you how I applied a German Schmear to my brick fireplace using tile grout. This was my first time trying this. It was actually easier than I was expecting. See how it turned out. See the before and after. Be warned - If you do a good job you'll be doing this for your friends!

I've been looking at different techniques to do this and I think I like this one the best. I loved the final result.

This is a great technique and the results are stunning on my fireplace. It totally transformed my old, painted fireplace, cost me about $60 in supplies at Lowe’s. The grout bag was really heavy, so I filled it about half way. I bought 2 grout bags and I used both because the bag got really messy and I didn’t want to take the time to wash it out. I used a large, metal putty knife to scrape the grout. I did not use a sponge to smooth, I liked the look of just scraping the grout. After the grout had partially dried on each section, I brushed off the excess with a damp sponge. This is definitely a 2 person job, so get someone to help if you want to finish a large fireplace in one day. I recruited my sister to help and it took us about 4 hours to schmear my fireplace.

You stated the very reason I’ve been hesitating! When I heard that, I knew I’d found the right video! Thank you! You want shallow grout lines, I actually have to fill mine in.

Makes sense! I’m doing this on fresh newly installed thin bricks for a backsplash

Americans actually seem to like the sloppy messy looking brickwork and even call it “ the farmhouse look “ or even the “ grunge look “ ( hilarious) I personally Do NOT but if someone actually wanted to Pay Me to Slop Up their brickwork I would probably try to just use White Portland and mason sand ( the white masons sand) and splash it up that way Why use Grout? Way more expensive and not really compatible with brick like mortar is. I need to find out what German Shmearing actually is first though probably a specific mix?

I don't understand at all. It looked like a great fireplace before and now it's a smeared mess?!?

No disrespect Butch, but it wasn't the best looking fireplace before, it looks even worse now
