Best video I've found for german smear (and I've watched a LOT) I like how he goes back and exposes some bricks.

I’m glad I got to see your version of this technique. I’ve been seeing other content that just looks like outlining the mortar. I love this! Thanks for sharing. It looks better after.

it's called plaster my Father did many homes in the 60's great for colder climates they even threw crushed glass into it before it hardened/ many homes when I was a kid had bits of crushed 7-Up bottles on older houses

I love the schemere or lime washed look on red brick. Make it look so old world and has a bit of charm to it. Great work!

awesome video! my house is old split face brick (textured) like yours but much much more textured. I hate it. I kind of want to cover it up with something like this or a thick bagging technique. the bricks are already painted though. is it an issue?

It could present an issue with bonding, if I remember correctly from researching, because the mortar needs a rigid and clean surface to bond to. Paint not only makes the surface "smooth", but depending on type of paint used it could not only prevent bonding but actually repel the mortar. I believe there are a few ways to prep that you can get around it I'm just not 100% sure what they are. I *believe* there are ways to sort of "acid wash" the paint, but also screen type systems you can install over top, although I believe you would lose the nice stone/brick texture going that route. It's definitely possible, you would just have to explore the options from professionals, and determine how much work and money you would have to put into it. 👍🏼

Could you paint over the German schmear with a cream color paint

I'm sure you could, much in the same way you would paint over masonry (brick/block). Interesting question though! 🤔

Better part of the day. Cant remember off hand, especially since that was the first wall I did, but I would say a few hours. I definitely got better at it the more I did, and was able to get the larger walls of the house done in a fraction of the time! Like most things, you just have to get the touch and method down.

You covered up too much of the bricks with the mortar & didn’t do it right. At least It does look better then before

It's not right because it's basically wet plastering an exterior brick. "German schmear" seems to mean whatever anyone wants today. No thought to its origin or when and where to use it.

Thank you! I really didn't like these bricks at all! The tri-colored bricks were so dated and depressing 😬 I've been dreaming of covering them up for as long as we've owned our house! -Heather

I hav a friend that just had to argue and fight to get her new home builder to do the white brick look because she was adamant she did not want red brick. Thought it was just a Florida thing. Lol❤️👍🏽
