@@abcabc-oh9gc wasn't meant as a flex, just as a funny story how I came in contact with the Scottish accent before. When it comes to a serious reason as to why I understand the Scottish dialect (while still struggling with Bavarian or Swabian btw) I think it's mostly because of the listening comprehensions I did at school. It's common to have those with speakers who either have an English dialect, or even a non-native accent (e.g. an Italian or Indian accent). I don't know how much German dialects are present in listening comprehensions for non-native students, but considering that dialects like low-german work with a whole different vocabulary, I assume that a Non-native german learner might be exposed less to German dialects than German English learners are exposed to English dialects

I'm from norhern Germany, speak Hochdeutsch and temporarily moved to Swabia...I honestly had to ask people to repeat what they said; I had less trouble chatting with Scots in the Highlands, while on vacation.

Due to the *Jugendamt* i Was moved away from home 6½ years ago. It is so hard to understand the people here. I grew up with a dialect but it mostly comes down to shortened pronunciation. But here?! It's like a whole different language😂😂😂

I thought more than once that Scottish is more understood by Germans than by Americans. If you speak English with a hard bavarian accent it sounds nearly similar to Scottish.

@@missscapegrace6675 You are absolutely right our languages have the same roots. Both our languages come from the Anglo-Saxon language, which has evolved from the Germanic languages. Unfortunately, I can only speak for us Germans, but we even have similar words with the Danes, Swedes, Finns and especially the Dutch.

I feel you. I actually am german and have a pretty strong bavarian dialect. And like, even most people in MUNICH can't understand me. Then again my mom has some friends from Baden-Württemberg and when they speak in their dialect I also only understand about 50%

Ugh the Ba-Wü dialekts - Schwäbisch sounds like an angry machine gun & badisch is just pure radio static. I cope by not listening or talking to them at all unless I hear klip und klar Hochdeutsch 😂

My mom moved from the Northwest to the Southeast years ago. I visit her once a year and especially when her old neighbors talk to each other I'll understand maybe 30% of the whole conversation. Then I am just smiling and nodding my head and hope there won't be a question asked 😂 it doen't get besser with the years, I am too much a "Saupreuss!" I guess 😂

@@eastfrisianguy If anyone calls you "Saupreiss" in Bavaria, call them "Bauernrammel" back. They'll probably try to kill you and make it look like an accident a few times for that, but if you survive that, you usually become accepted and will be good friends with the locals.

I as baverian from the south west part of bavaria I understand austrian and some part of swiss perfectly. But not ppl from north east bavaria XD.

That's how every single listening in school is like ... well no the sound of a starting plane is missing but very accurate 😢😂

I'm currently in a Berufsschulklasse with people from all over Germany. I learned three new words yesterday and today we got a lesson in why church and cherry (Kirche und Kirsche) sound basically the same in Thüringen. Lots of fun!

I'm from Munich and when the Berlin wall fell, suddenly people from Eastern Germany started showing up in Munich and in the beginning I often just couldn't understand them and they always got angry with me for that. They also couldn't understand my Bavarian dialect. After a while I got used to it though.

Friesen (on of the northern German groups) and Bavarians basically need translaters to communicate.

It's really not just a German thing. For example i needed nearly an hour till i got used to the souther us dialect they speak in rdr2 and if we take a look at GB its even worse... In some parts of gb its like they speak a whole other language 😂

Her Scottish accent is very understandable for me as a German with not perfect English knowledge - may be because Franconians and Scotch are rolling both the "R" in the same way.

Rewboss commented on that a few times in his videos. One observation of his that really stuck with me is "For most people it's normal to be bilingual in their own language, meaning that they speak a regional dialect at home and a standard dialect everywhere else."

i‘m german and i understood everything quite easy. But no worries, even i as someone who speaks bavarian i don’t understand other bavarians as soon as they’re drunk. you got this 😂

I'm also german and i speak a little swabian, so when people that only talk a little german, are trying to talk to me, I alwas try to talk as Hochdeutsch as possible, although, I'm not always so good at it😂

As an Upper Bavarian I indeed understand the Scottish dialect quite good and have often compared both to each other.

I understand 70% of what she's saying, which is more than I understand when a swiss or bavarian person is interviewed on TV.

Just wait until the germans write texts in their dialect, I am German and I can speak bavarian dialect but a text in bavarian is like guesswork, cause every few towns over it will be spelled differently again

But the thing is I’m from northern Bavaria and can understand the Scottish woman perfectly fine. I think the comparison isn’t quite right. She’s using the same words, just pronounces them differently. German dialects however often use different words. For example: „Lass uns gehen“ is the German version of „let’s go“ (in terms of leaving a place) but in my Franconion dialect it’s „geh mer“ as in „gehen wir“. Nobody says „lass uns gehen“ here. And even „gehen wir“ and „geh mer“ are spelled different, so I don’t think using Scottish is such a good example. There really is no example for the English language other than slang words but that doesn’t count as a dialect in my opinion.

I'm from Bavaria and visited Berlin a few years back. Me and my friends met two guys in a bar, one of them was irish, the other one was scottish. Irish accent: no problem for me. Scottish accent: very attractive, didn't understand shit 😂 but he really did his best to explain pool to my untalented ass 😂

I couldn't understand and couldn't guess what kind of dialect it was. To me it sounded like a Skandinavien dialect 😅

I grew up in Baden-Württemberg in a multicultural neighborhood with Turkish,Greek,Italian,Polish,Hungarian,Albanian and Russian native speakers and Sachsen-Anhalt when the GDR still was a thing.. Later moved to Nordrhein-Westfalen, now live in Berlin. Grew up with Southern American English, forced to use British English in school, picked up more English in Ireland and India. I have no dialect of my own in either language. But I pride myself in understanding tons of accents and dialects.

A lot of people don't grasp what a dialect is. I have noticed that in countries where dialects are hardly used, but also for example in Berlin. 😮

As a german from the north I can tell you: I do not understand my husband's family from the south, when they speak with each other in their very heavy dialect. It's not a shame to not understand dialects.

I'm Austrian, specifically I live in Vienna. In Vienna (especially in educational settings) there's not a lot of dialect, since there's literally people from everywhere who live here. As someone who speaks dialect at home, I learned back in kindergarten, that I had to turn off the dialect and speak the Austrian hochdeutsch, or else nobody would understand. I still speak in "normal" German in social settings and switch to dialect as soon as I leave the city. So I'd say, it's definitely a learned skill

I work in customer care for whole Germany and Austria. Meanwhile in the backoffice, but at the frontoffice ... uff, as a north German it was hard talking to bavarians or some parts of Austria have a very interesting dialect, too and people can be very mean and rude if you try your best and be as friendly as possible but you simply can't really understand them if they talk very fast and/or silent 😵‍💫

Come over here in SH we were influenced by British sailors especially the Kiel people. Most dialect words are easily understandable by someone having english knowledge.

I live in the north of Germany. When I was in Leipzig for the first time in 1990, I asked someone for direction. The only words I understood where "Hubbel" (tiny hill) or maybe it was "Huggel" (if there is someone from Leipzig around, please tell me which it might have been) and "nübber" (over). I was so lost. By the way I am of the minority who really likes the Saxon dialect.

To be honest I'm austrian so I speak dialectic german and for me there is not a big problem to understand the scottish woman. It's a problem when you learn a new language but when you learned it good enough you will understand dialect.

As a German, this was a too easy to understand Scottish dialect. I've heard way "worse" dialects in the UK. Ppl learning English will always have the goal to not only understand plain dialect free English. It's also not really helpful when you consider how many English speaking countries there are. Most ppl love the typical British sound, some Australian, New Zealand and I love the Irish and specifically the Derry dialect the most bc it's so expressive. When it comes to German dialects you can't forget Austria (especially Vienna) and Switzerland. I am fascinated by Schweizerdeutsch bc it's different enough from German that you can tune out easily to give privacy but if you want to eaves drop you just focus a bit on the conversation. At least that's my experience with it. Dialects are awesome bc they are living history. ❤

I dunno, maybe it's the adaption as native German speaker to being subjected to much stronger differences in dialects in German than one would typically hear in English, but I have no issue understanding her at all.

I think a problem in the comparison is that some german accents actually change the grammer, they just make it wrong. Or they use words in a way which is just wrong from the view of someone who is speaking Hochdeutsch. I'm not sure how it is for native english speakers, but for germans the Scottish accent is pretty easy to understand. But I'm sure it's hard to find an example.

I mean, Germany has more dialects than the USA tho it's tiny. I'm cute used to hear dialects due to my environement but don't speak one. But my parents kinda have their different dialects, but never use them, so they can't really use it anymore. Btw. There is some kind of fusion between dialect and Hochdeutsch when people with a heavy dialect still have an accent in Hochdeutsch.

Funnily, I am a German who grew up with Hochdeutsch. I understand like 20% of the Bavarian accent, others come quite naturally. This Scottish accent? I was able to comprehend like 40% at least, which basically means, dear, don't you fret, Bavarians are different.

Me as a German being like this is supposed to be hard? Try hearing my dad speak english. For real I think for someone who isn't used to doing the mental gymnastics you have to do in order to understand someone like my dad, this can be hard.

Most dialects are not that strong (in the past they probably were but standard german gained importance over the years). This is comparable to swiss german. But if you take actual scots you will see that it is even more different from english than this. Scots is its own language that evolved parallel to english. Test for you all: try reading the wikipedia entry for scots in scots
