Geralt contradicts himself. (Witcher 3)

Ойындар

Witcher 3: Talking about several contradictions in the game, that don't make a lot of sense, more specifically about Salt and whether or not it can be used to protect us from evil forces. Referring to the Doors Slammig Shut quest, the quest where we talk to Roach and a conversation with the Bloody Baron.

    The difference is between drawing the salt line at entrance (windows/doors) and already inside the house (golem quest). You are preventing something from entering your household, if it is already in, it doesn't matter. As Geralt says in the hermit quest, it may prevent entering, but is not guaranteed. I believe it makes entering more painful, but if a being is strong (like vengenful ghost), it may "live" through that.

    Maybe salt has to be drawn in a solid line in order to be an effective barrier. Maybe it's "scattered" salt (like Geralt finds in the house east of Novigrad) that is actually ineffective, even though peasants mistakenly think that it will work.

    That makes sense, but Geralt would probably say/think to himself that scattering salt was close enough, but still probably a fatal mistake, if the issue was the way to apply the salt

  • @TransGamerNerd27

    @TransGamerNerd27

    This is what I was gonna say. In IRL superstition a solid line of salt is what blocks out evil spirits. If it's scattered or there are gaps it won't work. And if there are other openings into the house, like windows, and they aren't guarded with salt then spirits can still get in. So I think the scattered salt being a "pointless superstition" is Geralt's way of saying the idiot commoners did it wrong. And when you look at the close ups of the salt lines in Crow's Perch they are solid whereas the line at the hermit'shouse has a very major break in it, and I don't think the windows have salt either.

    Geralt was always specific about salt being in front of doorways and windowsills: exterior thresholds. The salt he mocked was interior. I think he knows the proper function of salt against ghosts, but also knows its not a guarantee. "Might work" is what he says in B&W.

    It's all in the application of the salt. For the botchling + wraiths and the umbra, the salt was used to KEEP THE ENTITIES OUT of their homes. Meanwhile the caretakers of the estate in the Doors Slamming Shut contract used it to TRY AND BANISH THE GHOSTS AWAY FROM THE HOUSE. So when Geralt says "pointless superstition" he's referring to the other people's attempt to drive the ghosts away using the salt---which it doesn't do---not the use of salt for ghosts in general. Poland, we need you: what do these lines say in the original Polish versions?

  • @soapTHEgamer1

    Poland here. They say pretty much the same thing. But yes, I have wondered about those things too. The Bloody Baron like is "Tell your people not go leave their abodes and draw a line of salt under their doors". I But I think what Geralt was refering to was not "Salt doesnt repel ghosts" in general, more like "Commoners think everything is haunted". Geralt knows that ghosts dont cause earthquakes and scattering salt mindlessly everywhere isn't going to do anything. As for cultural context, in slavic cultures the threshold of the doorway was a VERY important thing, basically a gateway between the outside world and a separate realm of your abode. So it may just be that you specifically need to draw the line in the doorway and windows, AND as a solid line.

  • @NorthzYT

    My take is that salt is nothing but a superstition that he only recommends so the common people understand the gravity of the situation. Because despite the numerous tools Witchers carry around, you don't see any of them with a jar of salt. Also BnW Hermit quest is a special case, the woman refused the easy solution so Gerald suggested salt because there was nothing else left to do, he also didn't say it was going to work: "Might keep him out".

    I think it's more than a superstition but Witcher's deal with mightier foes and their Signs are more powerful than salt. It's not practical for witchers to use a jar of salt. How would that help them? Yrden and Quen are far more effective.

  • @diyeana
    @diyeana3 ай бұрын

    I agree with the thought that it's pointless for the salt to be inside, trying to keep the ghosts out of a certain area of the house. The salt has to be at a threshold, barring the evil force from entering the house. It's like the superstition where you have to invite a vampire into your home before they can enter. Then the salt *might* block the entity from entering. Once it's in though ... you're screwed. haha Of course, it's just a game and the developers probably made a mistake. :) Welcome back. My condolences to you and your family. Edit: combined my first two sentences. What was that word salad? Also added a transitional "then".

Also, I can't remember exactly where, but in the books wasn't there a mention of what is considered to be a lesser vampire in the games being referred to as a higher vampire? My condolences for your loss and sending positive vibes for a better year. My first thought was that it was just an oversight on the writing team that wasn't caught in editing. With a game of this scale and detail it's understandable something would get missed and I can forgive it. My second thought is salt does protect but that doesn't mean it's effective against every threat. It depends on the entity. Stronger ones can get by a salt line. Sometimes salt isn't enough and shouldn't be the sole ward to rely on. It can be one of a few things to do to protect one's household from negative/evil forces. Seems like Geralt gave the hermit a very basic thing to do knowing the spirit was powerful. This "bad" ending of the quest felt very lazy to me like the writers just didn't want to flesh anything out clearly showing the "right" choice to make was to forgive the spirit. Or Geralt was just tired.

    This is a myth that goes back into Antiquity, with even the Romans believing it would ward off evil spirits. It's a belief that is not only limited to Europe but also African and Native American cultures, presumably because of the preservation effects salt has on food (it wasn't originally used as seasoning, it was used to preserve). Interestingly I believe in China it's supposed to bring good luck so if we combine those two superstitions in the Witcher world, its practical use becomes situational. Also bear in mind that Geralt does not claim it _will_ work, only that it _might_ work which might suggest that it's not a sure fire method of protection with the more malevolent the spirit, the less likely it is to work.

    In the quest "In the Eternal Fire's Shadow" I understood that salt can be useful to protect against spirits, at least partially.

    It's not just the line vs scattered salt, but also the fact that the salt should stop the ghost from getting in (and as such it has to be on the door) while in the case of the haunted house it's been thrown in the middle of the room. Ghosts don't just hate salt but they may not be able to cross an entrance lined with it

    Reinald imprisoned himself and the miasmal in a salt cavern. But judging by the amount of control the miasmal still had, the effectiveness of salt could depend on the power of the monster/wraith/whatever. I don't think Elementals are affected by salt either. This also explains why the wraiths weren't able to enter the homes in the lubberkin quest since most wraiths aren't that powerful. Miasmal and Umbra however, different story.

    In the case of B&W, he says that salt "Might keep him out". In my opinion, that is last line of defense, and it is possible that it won't work because of some reasons we don't know. Keep the good work.

    So sorry to hear about your relative. My condolences to your family and you. As to what Geralt says to the hermit, he does say "it *might* work", which also means it may also NOT work. He could simply be hoping that in this case it could have an effect, knowing that it's not quite a typical kind of ghost that haunts the hermit.

    As I understand, witchers including Geralt, have mixed experiences with salt's usefulness. When talking to the hermit he doesn't say that it "will" protect her, he says it "might". It is an occasionally useful practice that doesn't always work for sure.

    Seeing how the Witcher series (esp. The Witcher 3) are a heavily story based game, I'm thinking that the references to "salt" as a form of "protection" are more to do with bringing about a sense of comfort to those who are in need of it. Hope things get better for you. We all miss you and your work on these videos.

    I'm sorry for your loss and I send you strength. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this either but I was playing the new quest with the miasma and I swear Geralt also recommends to the deacon to use salt to protect himself plus the salt cave. Though I don't remember the specifics.
