🌟 Preserving History at Mapperton House: Help Bring the American Heiress Exhibition to Life! 🌟 Hello, dear supporters! I'm Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, and as many of you know, I've stumbled upon an extraordinary treasure at Mapperton House in West Dorset - the largest American heiress collection of letters, diaries, and journals in the world! Now, with the help of over 25 virtual volunteers worldwide, we're on a mission to digitise and transcribe these precious documents.
However, there's a crucial need: Mapperton House lacks an archivist, and these invaluable pieces of history need proper conservation. I've taken it upon myself to learn the delicate art of repairing precious books, letters, and journals, each with its own unique story and many with small tears. In a nut shell, say hello to Mapperton's new archivist, me! But here's where you come in!
I'm reaching out to you on www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo... to raise funds for essential archival equipment and exhibition supplies. This includes Conservation quality plan chest drawer cabinets, a Commercial quality dehumidifier, dress displays, hat mounts, display pillows, portable boxes, book cloths, wheat paste, and various conservation tools.
What's in it for you? For those of you who generously donate three or more cups of coffee, you'll have exclusive access to the American Heiress exhibition this summer (5th May 2024 - 28th August 2024) free of charge. Check out the opening times at Mapperton.com.
🌟 Can't Join Us in Person? No Worries - We've Got You Covered! 🌟 If you can't make it to the exhibition in person, don't worry - I've got something special just for you! You'll receive a personalized tour of the exhibition led by yours truly. Your exclusive private link to this virtual tour will be sent directly to you by the end of April, right before the exhibition opens its doors! But that's not all!
For the amazing souls who contribute 15 cups of coffee, you'll receive:
✨ A personalized tour of the exhibition - either in person or virtually (your choice).
✨ A beautiful pack of Alberta postcards (5 in total).
✨ A wonderful pack of Alberta's 7 drink recipes found in her 120-year-old cookbook - all designed by my talented sister-in-law Polly. These goodies will be sent to you via Royal Mail once the final mockups are perfected. Trust me; they're going to be even more beautiful than the attached images - we're still tweaking!
Your support means the world to me and Alberta and plays a vital role in preserving this unique slice of history. Join us on this incredible journey, and let's make the American Heiress exhibition a reality! Thank you for being a part of this historical endeavor. I think the fireplace is the most prominent feature in the room and on camera it has a Cotswold stone color to it, a beige/yellow tone , I feel pink and white around it will make it look even more yellow.

I was a professional designer for over 45 years as well as having been a paint consultant utilizing historical paints of an American national brand of paint. I am sorry, Julie, please do not go with pink for this room. Understanding paint and color takes experience. Go ask Malcom or some other professional designer. The pink "Clashes big-time," especially with the mustard leather couch, as well as the piano wood, the mantle, and the earthy hues of the book binders. Look at your color-wheel. The flavor of the room is masculine, which is determined by the mantle, leather couch, books, and the stone mantle surround. However, you need to take the rug into account, as well. Again, let me advise that whenever anyone is selecting paint color, it is very important to paint large swaths on each wall with the selected paint choice and live with it for about a week in different lighting situations. Do not judge by those small painted boards. Go get Malcom to help you!! If he is not available, find another experienced designer to help you. This is my professional advice.

@@lyndarichardson4744 The colors used for the cottage were not colors I would have used, either! A black floor would show every speck of dust. Having owned a black car, I would NEVER use black inside for anything other than perhaps a throw pillow. Green walls remind me of hospitals, not cozy cottages. But then, we don't have to clean a black floor, or live in a green room. I would want to LEAVE a green room. Quickly.

TBH in stately homes there are ALL KINDS of paint colors used, including pinks. These colors are not odd for a house like this one. They'll zero in on what works. But the colors she is considering are completely within the bounds of historical homes. She travels to so many of them and has seen a lot of examples.

Please consider (at 10:00-11:00) painting the shelves a white. Dark books and shelves together create a dark mass looming over you. White shelves will break it up and give a lighter feel. Thank you.

Pink and blue? Are you doing a nursery or library? The lighter of the two blues for inside the bookcases is a really good choice. It will look darker back in there, so you don't want the darker, more grayed blue. But that pale pink on the walls will look nasty with the fireplace, sofa, etc. Go with a very pale blue - e.g. lighten the bookcase-interior blue by about 80%, The paint company will add enough pure white to lighten it properly but with the same hue. Well coordinated when you do lighter and deeper versions of the exact same color. I work a lot with photography, printing, etc. [publishing industry] so work a lot with colors in addition to working with spiritual values of colors, chakras, light energy work. Ditch the pink. The vibe is all wrong.

I always love the enthusiasm, energy & passion you bring to your restoration projects. Personally, I am not a fan of the color choices. They are more appropriate for children's rooms. The fireplace is the dominating feature & the color choices are not complementary but seem to be conflicting with the beautiful hues of the stone. Before commiting to these colors, please reconsider by researching color combinations that will compliment the fireplace & historical look of the ceiling & the home itself.

This is fun . 😄 Color drama . 👍😆 In fairness , most of us can't see what the colors actually look like on our devices , plus everyone is probably seeing variations of the colors depending on the brand and age of mobile , tablet , or computer they are watching on . I have learned not to pick out colors based on online paint color charts . Big mistake . Looking forward to seeing what fabrics you choose to complement the wall color choices .

I dont think you can beat a nice crisp white for woodwork and the shelves, and a mid to darker colour on the wall (for me it would have to be a green, although a blue from the rug could work too). This would allow all the wood work, the fire place, the ceiling, the paintings etc. and the books on the shelves to have their moment. Drama, coziness and light! But then again its not my library sadly 😅 it's got to be what works for you!

COMPLETELY agree! A library is NOT the room for color! And why mess with those beautiful bookcases?! What is the point of painting the insides or shelves a darkish blue? It serves no purpose! The colors you choose ate beautiful BUT its making the room look very 21st century, which is ok but not when you are trying to preserve the essence of an historical house, ill be better to peel a bit and try to find the original color and go from there to a new color pallad that suits your liking. Sounds cliche but this room reminds me of autumn, i think it needs an earth tone color pallad. Like a tone down mustard or even gold.

I suppose I should have asked first as I would a client … What mood are you trying to create? What is it you are unhappy with as it is right now in the library? Are you wanting to make changes to furniture swapping or buying new or rearranging what furniture art or rugs you have in the room now? How often do you or anyone else in the home use the room now? Is this refresh because of yours and wanting to refresh in general? I can understand wanting to go lighter fresher look as the local weather can make you feel depressed and gloomy. That said a lighter take on the walls can work… as well as rearranging the furniture swapping rugs from one room to another changing light fixtures art Accessories as well. 5:53 I also must say I probably wouldn’t have suggested the colour that is currently in the room either. Take into consideration all of the pieces you are keeping in the room it’s a puzzle It’s setting a stage the walls are the backdrop to the performance Which is the furniture art accessories rugs drapery etc The walls are the back drop …

The fireplace has too much yellow in it for the pink to work on the walls. Perhaps a nice salmon or peach color? White woodwork.

Did you say what direction your library faces, it makes all the difference to the paint colour. South/west facing - cool tone and north/east warm tones.

In Canada we have pellet stoves. It is a wood burning heater that uses pressed sawdust pellets for fuel. They can be set to keep a room at a certain temperature or can be started with the push of a button. If the chimney in the archive room can be used I think is could be great in there. I have one in my basement and it works wonders for keeping the basement warm and the air dry.

Librarys are masculine rooms and should not be pink toned colors. Why not try a lighter green. The pink is going to look horrible with the colors of the books.

I don't know about adhering to a library as a masculine room, and even ponder what colors were considered masculine during that time - but I am 100000 percent with you that that color will look pretty bad with the focal point of those gorgeous books.

Those colors look like they'd be appropriate in a young girls room, not a library. Pink and purple??? Geez. I think a deep red would be nice on the walls and a barely off white on the woodwork.

The blue seems...out of the blue. It doesn't seem to relate to anything else in the room. If you're going with the soft pink on the walls, what about a wine in the bookcase to tie in with that and the rich browns and burgundies of the books? I agree with others to paint around the fireplace first and live with it for a few days. It might make the stone look dinghy.

Julie, I so admired the give and take between you and Luke as you negotiated paint colors for the library. It was wise to start with a limited number of choices to simplify the selection process.

I like the last two pale colors the best of the current options. I would consider exploring other choices for the walls, maybe slightly darker and/or classic. If you went with a little more color on the walls, you could leave the bookshelves a lighter color. They might seem heavy painted a dark color. I love all the restoration you are doing. Beautiful! Thank you for letting us share our suggestions.

After seeing so many no votes on your colors (which I initially felt they were a no also, ) I did a little research. Now I am no expert, but I think I can see your vision,Julie. I agree with the others about the fireplace. Put the colors up to and see if they go with the fireplace and other furniture, rugs, draperies you plan to keep.

Although the rose and white paints are very pretty they do not tone in with your magnigicent fire place or the furniture you have in the library. Sorry to sound so negative but I also do not like the idea of blue inside the bookshelves. Goodluck with your decision making!!

When you are using leather consolidator I would advise taking aliquots of the consolidator into a small container so you don’t contaminate the bulk with particles of red rot.

Be sure to try the wall colour next to the fire surround, and all the shortlisted colours in several lighting conditions, before committing yourselves. It's surprising how artificial versus daylight can change our perceptions. Lastly, don't rely too much on specific recommendations from us here online - our impressions are heavily weighted according to our monitor settings! On another front, I'm really enjoying the materials conservation by Lady Julie.

Crisp white for all the woodwork and a light blue or green. This will feature the external colors and bring them in. The ceiling and fireplace are the prominent areas of the room. Ooohhh, you get to it as you discuss.

The paint that that you finally decided on is the best choice, otherwise I suggest you paint the Kenningston Rose onto a piece of primed wood as you will find a huge difference between the colour being painted on wood & plaster. I found that when they painted my flat as I wanted the walls the lightest colour with a hint of green & they used the paint over the door frames & architraves & the colour came up darker.

Julie. You need to get a humidity ( water) reader. We used Onset HOBOs. Set up, put where you want moisture reading, set time interval, will go til you stop it(read the info) then read by computer app, also records temp. Not expensive. Not hard to use.
