Dear Luke-- the reason for the marshmallows plus the browned sugar is to make the “CANDIED” part of the candied sweet potatoes. If you are making simple baked sweet potatoes you can leave off the marshmallows. I must say Luke, you are so cute in so many ways.

Oh yuck. I absolutely despise candied sweet potatoes any time. In our household, we do natural sweet potatoes and you can add whatever you’d like. I like to pile veggies onto mine, like Brussel sprouts or greens. We do salads at Thanksgiving, and emphasize the fresh veggies so we don’t all feel unhealthy after eating the feast. 🥗

No courses, Luke. Food either placed on the table, a sideboard, or kitchen counter--everyone either passes the dishes or stands in line. The turkey may or may not be placed on the table carved...lots of variety in presentation. It can be lots of fun. Yes to marshmallows, too. Happy eating, and Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🇺🇸🇬🇧

I was around before the green bean casserole was ever a thing, at least not in Northern California, I can remember in around 1970, my mom and I were looking at the recipe on a can of Campbell's' Cream of Mushroom soup, and we both thought we'd like to try it for Thanksgiving. The next year rolled around, and we wanted it again. We told friends about it, and brought it to a couple of Thanksgiving dinners we were invited to, it was just the two of us, and we sometimes received kind invitations from friends, and it was always popular. About fifteen or twenty years later or so, it was everywhere. It had become a Thanksgiving staple I have often made it without the can of soup, making the sauce from scratch but I wouldn't say it's a monumental difference. The original recipe called for canned beans, which I don't do. I'm not the kind of cook who measures stuff, and I tweek; I add garlic and whatever else I want, and it's always good.

I am Canadian and we do not get the marshmallows on yams thing. One odd throwback to the 70s we still have in our family is a jello mold...lemon jello with pineapple and shredded carrots. Because our Thanksgiving is at harvest time (October), we often have squash rather than yams. We'd also give our napkins one additional fold.

That table is beautiful and you want to take excellent care of it. Please get table pads for each leaf, put that under the tablecloth. Placemats are so informal, fine for the kitchen, or informal family meals. A table looks so much more festive with tablecloths, and the pads protect the wood from spills, scratches, etc.

I truly love the family history and so sweet of you to embed yourself in it not only for your children but you can see the love you have discovering it. If I had the money I'd stay there next October but I still enjoy watching your videos and trying to learn it all. It's deep and a little complicating but you know as an American their standards and eticasy is a bit fussy for me. Lol I'd be a disaster on all that. I eat in my recliner most of the time. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, Watergate salad - there are no greens in this, rolls, and macaroni and cheese- a southern thing here in the states.
